Devin Thomas Dunk Shatters Backboard: High School Star Throws Down Amazing Slam (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/17/2012 3:06 pm Updated: 02/19/2012 11:15 am

This is always entertaining, and awesome. Devin Thomas, a high school basketball star for Central Dauphin in Harrisburg, Pa., threw down an incredible alley-oop dunk that shattered the backboard even caught the attention of some students in the school's hallway who had not been watching the game.

The highlight happened in the third quarter of Thursday night's Mid-Penn tournament championship game against Greencastle-Antrim. The basket put Central Dauphin up 39-30, but the game had to be suspended until Friday night at 7 p.m. ET. 11:02 remains in the game.

"I didn't think I dunked it that hard for it to break," Thomas said, via The Patriot-News. "Guess I did, so we'll continue this tomorrow."

Wake Forest fans must be happy to see this, since he will be wearing a Demon Deacon jersey this fall.

Dunks are the most overhyped, yet most boring play, in basketball rivaled by only the intentional walk in baseball, but are totally worth it because of the extra bonus points you get for a dunk.

What? You don't get any extra points for a dunk?

Never mind.

"Chink in the armor," has no racial connotations, whatsoever, and I am black, so I am an expert on racial slurs. The "N" word, lacks double entendre, no wiggle room, unequivocable. I have been hearing that one, for all of my fifty-nine years, which qualifies me as an expert on the subject matter.

The dunk didn't break it. His hanging on the rim did which he shouldn't be doing anyway. Let's not give attention where none is due.

What is wrong with people? Destroying property is amazing? I am not impressed. The power of the shot did not break the backboard. Hanging on the rim did. He or his parents should pay for damages. The game was called? Well that should be a forfieture of the game.

My feeling. It should be a penalty for anyone to have hands attached to the basket. Not only was it uncalled for and caused serious monetary damage, it could have injured someone.

OK after pulling the clip and slowing it down, he wasnt hanging by want,,,,as he uses both sets of finger tips to help dunk the ball in his hands are sliding down over the rim, NOW from what Iwas taught in basket ball you have to FORCE your hands to open up because after a shot like that you are instinctively going to close your hands to stop falling. From close up his fingers dig close on rim and he didnt react fast enough, also according to my old coach the glass board still had the old non spring loaded brackets, which should have been changed many years ago,,like back in 90s,,at least in Indiana most have been swapped out.
He didnt hang, and it caused the board to shatter. And if he had the goals would have pulled farther through. He simply didnt react as fast as he should have,,simple accident, on of the guys who used to ref for my school also said same thing.

He was hanging from the rim like a an old-time western horse thief.

Maybe the school could not afford to replace it? Ever thought of that? He was hanging and we all witnessed it. He should have to pay for it.

When big kids hang on the the rim, their weight, multiplied by the leverage provided by the rim, flexes the glass until it shatters. This has absolutely nothing to do with stuffing the ball through said rim. If they want to save the money of repairing the backboard, and want to avoid game delays while they do this, they should institute a very reasonable rule that forbids trying to break the backboard by violently jerking it downward. No hanging on the rim, even if the pros make it look like fun.

the outermost part of the rim clearly bent down when the player hung on it, albeit for a split second. thats what broke the "glass"... NOT the dunk itself. call it like it is, folks.

Gee, when we were playing pickup ball and "accidentally" broke a window while making a "fabulous" play, they threatened us with charges of destruction of school property and made us pay for the damage. Exactly what's the difference here? Every high school kid in the nation will now be trying the same thing since this one's a "hero". Didn't the NBA have a rash of this for a while and they stopped it by penalizing players who damaged the court.

I would bet that very few, on this forum, know that the first player to break a glass backboard, was Chuck "The Rifleman" Connors, when he played with the Celtics, in the 1946.
