Noisecreep:

Megadeth bassist David Ellefson recently caused a stir on the heavy metal news outlets when he revealed in an interview with St. Louis Today that he was studying to become a pastor in the Lutheran church. Many fans of the band criticized Ellefson for betraying his metal roots, but he's hardly the first headbanger to find religion. Here's a list of eight metallers who went from rock star to choir boy.

Two of these became Muslim (J. Jackson and Cat "kill Salman Rushdie" Stevens), one was and is a Zen Buddhist (No-God). one became a Rabbi, one went from Jewish to x-tian and back to Jewish (the great Bob Dylan), one became Mormon. Some found Jesus. Many didn't. The lesson: none. But I'm glad some people can at least think for themselves, sort of.

These "rock stars" have fallen for the oldest christian trick in the book: "all of your sins are now forgiven" jive. FYI: there are no sins and the past is the past. They'll figure this out sooner or later. But in the meantime, I'm sure their chosen churches are really happy to receive all of their money (that they made off of sinners). This story is just ridiculous as are all religious beliefs.

The world is full of sin my friend, but one thing the born again christian has when he recieves JESUS as his LORD AND SAVIOUR of all, is forgiveness of the sins commited in the past, one thing they'll figure if they follow and serve him from now on, is that nothing they've had can even come close to what life with JESUS can now offer them, love, grace, mercy hope, peace and a place prepared for them in the kingdom of heaven when he decides to call them home. What he endured on the cross, he endured for you and me my friend.

I'm not a christian, my friend. : )

I believe in something much much more true than the bible, my friend. But it's a secret.

Achh.. saying is one thing, living it another. It's become a societal trope that, when down on your luck, claim to find God. Make sure everyone hears you when you do it. Everyone will nod their heads "right on!" and let you go about your way. Which usually means going back to whatever you were doing before.

The proclamation is an expression of insecurity about whether it will "stick" or not. Lasting life changes come from quiet resolve, and a "just do it" approach.

They left out Paul DiAnno, original Iron Maiden vocalist and a convert to Islam.

When there are stories about turning to God you get 9 comments and little animosity from the God haters. When there are stories questioning, challenging God/religion you get 1,000+ comments and hundreds of mocking comments from the anti-faithful. Guess they couldnt find much to poke fun at here.

Many of these guys were raised in the church and are just returning to the faith of their youth.

Good for them!

They also believed in Santa Clause in their youth. Now they do again. Good for them!

I imagine these guys know better than anyone the paradox that being self-serving is the fastest way to make yourself miserable.

It doesn't really matter what they chose to convert to, the point is being part of something bigger to yourself– be it religion, Humanism, Ecology, whatever, as long as you don't impose your values on others.

The bottom line: Are yo a Giver or are you a Taker?

GOD ain't lost. We don't find HIM. "For whom HE did foreknow, HE also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of HIS SON, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren" Romans 8:29 "In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of HIM who worketh all things after the counsel of HIS OWN WILL" Ephesians 1:11. Life.

"Heavy Metal Stars that Found God." Did god go and get himself lost again? That God guy! Gotta put a leash on him since people are always needing to find him.

Alice Cooper is not really heavy metal and his father was a minister. I think he probably "found" god before he was a rock star.
