WASHINGTON -- Two polls, two different results. A new public poll of Massachusetts voters released Thursday night shows Sen. Scott Brown with a statistically significant lead over Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren, contradicting the results of a survey released earlier in the week that showed a much closer result and gave Warren a slight edge.

The new survey conducted by the Suffolk University Political Research Center for Boston television station WHDH (7News), from Feb. 11 to Feb. 15, gives Brown a 9 percentage point lead over Warren (49 percent to 40 percent) with 2 percent opting for another candidate and 9 percent undecided.

A second poll released on Tuesday, conducted by the Massachusetts think tank MassINC on behalf of Boston NPR station WBUR, gave Warren a three percentage point edge (46 percent to 43 percent) that was not large enough to be considered statistically significant.

The Suffolk University findings, if accurate, represent a departure not only from the MassINC survey, but also from two polls late last year that both showed Warren slightly ahead. A live-interviewer survey conducted by the Boston Herald and UMass Lowell in early December gave Warren a seven percentage point lead (49 percent to 42 percent). An Internet poll conducted in early November by UMass Amherst showed Warren leading by four percentage points (43 percent to 39 percent).

The two new surveys were both conducted by telephone using live interviewers, and both called voters on both landline and mobile phones. The Suffolk University survey interviewed 600 registered voters in Massachusetts, while the MassINC survey interviewed 503 voters likely to vote in 2012. Typically, surveys that screen for likely voters, like the MassINC poll, are more likely to produce results slightly more favorable to Republicans, but in this case Warren did worse on the broader sampling of registered voters on the Suffolk University poll.

Regardless of what 1 out of 4 polls say ... i think it is too soon to get excited about any of this.  Plus, a 600 people or less sampling of registered voters is just not a "good sampling" imho.

I would have liked to have seen questions such as:

Do you identify with the Tea Party?
Do you like the fact that Scott Brown was a Tea Party backed candidate?
Do you think Elizabeth  Read More...

I like Scott Brown but ti's not him that's the problem. The problem is the right-wing conservative party that is controled by MConnell, Boehner, Ryan and Canter. To give them the majority in the House or Senate would not only put back the same group that got America in the worse depression in eighty years but with the removal of regulations, which are the peoples protection against greedy business practices, that is sure to come and threaten our stability as a Nation. But the right-wing conservatives majority would also threaten the Supreme Court with the Democrtic-Republican balance that it must have to represent a Democratic America. It could abolish Abortion rights and many others religious and civil rights of all AmericansThis is not the time to give the radical right unlimited power..It would give them four years to do unlimited damage

This is not the newest poll. The poll just out, reported on the radio today, shows Brown pulling ahead even more, and this is after Elizabeth ran her mouth, falsly claiming that Brown was opposed to women's health. here in MA that kind of attack wpon't work. It was tried before, and failed.

POLLS are like research you can find a study to show results in favor of almost anything and it certainly depends on who you are asking. Republicans have worked very hard since 2008 to cut down the number of people voting in Democratic bases from Acorn elimination to voter registration identification restraints. Luckily people can crossover and vote along not party lines but interest lines. If 80% of 100 republicans vote for Scott Brown, it is no comparison to 70% of all the eligible voters.

The citizens of Massachusetts seem smart enough to not repeat a mistake...betting they won't, recognizing that any GOP lawmakers are too many...

As a (former) longtime resident of Mass, I would suggest that it would be easy to overstate Warren's support for two reasons: the large number of out-of-state and likely unregistered student and post-collegiate residents, who vote at a lower rate than older residents and those who grew up there, and the possibility that women in the heavily Catholic state may be slightly more likely to follow their husbands or other male opinion in political choices than other women.

The big joke about Massachusetts having a reputation as the most liberal state is that it is simultaneously among the most conservative if you go by appearance (businesslike, institutional, wealthy, professional) or by statistic (married not divorced, safe, high levels of education, etc.).

"likely to follow their husbands or other male opinion in political choices" Uh.... don't think so, as much as the GOP would like it, this is not 1950. Women have minds of their own.

I say good for you. The men, I'm one, you are talking about are another species of human some women too. It all blurs at the middle

Conservative men see reality as living in The Law of the Jungle and tough love and male dominence as "deciders" (remember Bush's said that). They follow family values based on morals and tough love teaching self reliance with child parent relationship built on Fear & Respect of parents in an atmosphere of reward and punishment.

Liberal Dems seek family child parent relationship built on respect and trush with nurturing love instilling empathy and moral diversity (gay acceptance?). Our reality is All for One and One for All. Each side, the further you get from the middle, are less inclined to have a choice in their realities because it is in their DNA (?).

There are TWO SPECIES of Humanoids and only Evolution will decided which becomes dominant like all evolutionary processes of the past thousands of years. Democracy and human rights are the result of Progressive type humans.

Liberals pursue: teaching, science, professors, architect, media. Conserv pursue: judge, sales, stockbroker, military, police careers and each side complains about the other's vocations.

Think about it and VOTE. It is your only chance, LOL There was a time when Cons would not let you, LOL (kings, emporers, dictators, etc)

Did anyone notice that the poll only included responses from 25 African Americans? There were 600 Massachusetts residents polled. Likely Voters only. But only 25 African American responses. Is that in line with voter demographics in Mass? And also, polling only Likely Voters. The only people who are 100% sure they will vote are older people. Senior citizens and retirees. These are our most Conservative citizens out there. This is what Scott Rasmussen does in his polls (Rasmussen Reports). His polls always favor Republican voters by large amounts. Scott Rasmussen has said himself that this is why he gets the results he gets. Because he only polls likely voters. An his accuracy rate is one of the poorest. Studies have shown that polls using only likely voters tend to favor Republican Candidates. Quinnipiac has the most accurate polls. They poll Registered Voters, not likely voters. Also the Suffolk poll overrepresented Independents, alot of whom are "Closeted Republicans" here in Massachusetts.

clearly, the best candidate, elizabeth warren. a harvard law professor, consitutional law expert, and the peoples advocate, fighting for the rights of the people, not the greedy corporations, and wall street, who are funneling mega millions to lobbyist, and the gop. i saw scott brown, on a few talk shows. morning joe, and the view. both times, he appeared to be incoherent. what are his great accomplishments, while he occupied a senate seat? nothing. after elizabeth warren wins the election, i would like to see her run for president, 2016.

While my initial reaction is to ask you what ANYBODY in the Senate for the last two years can list for "great accomplishments" I will in fact point to the Stock Act as a terrific accomplishment seeing as we have gone almost 120 sessions of Congress without an actual ban on insider trading.

Brown's bill offering incentives for hiring military personnel is pretty good too.
I think it is important to help people that have been over seas fighting wars, regardless of how unpopular they are, to transition back to civilian life. These are a large group of quality people that may not slip back into society after years of being inserted into a high stress life among a foreign culture.

Some of the only pieces of legislation to actually pass in this environment of utter stalemates has come from Brown's desk.

Libs love to preach bipartisan compromise but when somebody actually does it they could care less.

It's funny. In previous articles at this site about this race the people in the comment section already has Warren elected. And when I had the temerity to point out a poll that showed that the results might be close I got flamed for it. Now here is another poll. All of these polls, whether they show Brown or Warren with a slight lead simply indicate that this is a close race that could go either way.

But there is a lot of anti Brown bias at this site and that's why so many commenters refuse to believe any poll that doesn't show Warren winning in a landslide. Even the headline writer shows bias. The headline reads "New Massachusetts Poll With Surprising Result" as if it's a surprise that an incumbent senator up for election is leading in a poll. It is not a surprise. Warren may yet win the election but it's not a slam dunk like so many biased posters at this site seem to think.
02:35 AM on 03/05/2012
Actually, it IS a surprise.
In a climate where it's commonly believed that deregulated bankers run amok created a wrecked economy and untold losses for millions, it is a surprise that so many would support someone who "has taken more money from the financial industry than almost any other senator: all told, more than $1 million during the last two years," according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics.
IT IS INDEED a serious and sad SURPRISE that this is not an huge red flag for more of those polled.

I truly believe Scott Brown to be a nice lightweight middle of the road Republican
follower who is OK enough in his own right, but hampered by his GOP tether and
not able to do what must be done soon for the great State of Massachusetts.
Returning him to business as usual would severely marginalize the state's economy.
At this important point in time, we greatly and badly need the intelligence and
enthusiasm of a non-professional politician beholden to no one.

Brown is an idiot, and apparently so are the citizens of Massachusetts.
But honestly, I do not believe that Brown is leading Warren, it must be
some kind of media manipulation or dirty tricks. Massachusetts, give
Warren a chance.

This poll was conducted prior to the nation, and Masschusetts, learning that Brown is co-sponsoring Blunt's bill that would make it legal for an employer to decide (based on his/her arbitrary emotions and faith) what components of a female employee's health care would or would not be covered. Scott Brown thinks it should be okay for an employer to come between a woman and her doctor. Do the poll after the news of Brown's co-sponsorship of Rep. Blunt's bill spreads. I'll bet the outcome will be far, far different.
