Steve Martin Talks His Twitter Book On 'Conan' (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/17/2012 12:59 pm Updated: 02/17/2012 4:51 pm

When Steve Martin joined Twitter, his jokes were a revelation -- Martin hadn't done stand-up comedy in decades, and most of his humor was limited to awards show appearances and talk show couches. Bringing it full circle, he appeared on one of those talk show couches on Thursday to talk about Twitter on "Conan."

Martin described that to him, Twitter was just the natural place to go for musings he'd written in his journal for years. He even read off some proto-tweets that he wrote after appearing on Conan's shows over the years. They're not real (we hope), but they're funny: "I always enjoy getting dinner with Conan, so I can practice fake laughing."

A collection of his tweets was just published in the book "The Ten, Make That Nine, Habits of Very Organized People. Make That Ten.: The Tweets of Steve Martin," with all proceeds going to charity. Conan read off a few of his very funny ones. Check out his Twitter account for yourself at @SteveMartinToGo.

He also revealed that his famous "jury duty" tweets was just an extended joke, not real.

Another Martin book, "An Object of Beauty," will be making the leap to the big screen with Amy Adams starring.

UPDATE: Eagle-eyed commenter Davej1234 pointed out that Steve Martin's bit where he reads through his journal and recollects that Conan was "sluggish" each time he guested on the show was hardly a new bit -- Martin first did it on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" in 1989. Was he recycling old material, or subtly paying homage to the master, whose desk Conan briefly occupied? You be the judge.

Steve Martin is my hero. A true Renaissance man. He's done stand-up, sketch comedy, hosting, been a lead actor in films, written screenplays, stage plays, comedy shorts, humorous essays, novels, written songs, had a Top 20 hit on Billboard, won Grammies, live toured with a bluegrass band, and is well-versed in art history. Truly spectacular. I'm in awe with how effortlessly he slips into new arenas and tries new things. He does it so easily, people often take him for granted.

Steve Martin is probably the best comedian of his generation. Can't think of anyone funnier than him. Saw him play banjo live, it was amazing.

Martin has become the Charlie Weaver of late night shows. Too bad Tic Tac Dough ain't around anymore, this tired and very over guy would have a second career.

When I first heard , "King Tut", as a kid I thought it was hilarious then and still do. Love his new stuff too. He's always been funny, and smart as well.
