Whitney Houston Funeral; Singer's Hometown To Reclaim Legend

NEWARK, N.J. — Although Whitney Houston was one of the most famous people in the world, she never felt comfortable in the spotlight.

Houston often spoke about feeling uneasy in her role as a superstar. Even as she prepared to stage a comeback nearly three years ago, she yearned to shed the celebrity-centered, tabloid glare that came with her fame.

"I am not geared for it. It goes along with the territory," she told The Associated Press in a 2009 interview. "I just want to be recognized for my music and for what it does and how it inspires people and how it makes people feel as opposed to talking about Whitney all the time kind of thing. That's all done. It's passed, and I would just like to be recognized for my music."

Houston will be recognized for that, and for much more, on Saturday, when her funeral is held at Newark's New Hope Baptist Church, where she sang with the choir as a young girl. While she died last weekend in tony Beverly Hills, Calif., amid a media and celebrity crush ahead of her mentor Clive Davis' pre-Grammy Awards party, her funeral will be a chance to reclaim Whitney Houston the person, instead of the icon.

The church, which seats about 300 people, will be filled with friends, family members and some of her famous connections. Kevin Costner, her co-star in the movie blockbuster "The Bodyguard," is scheduled to speak, as is Davis, the music mogul responsible for launching and guiding her career. Her cousin and fellow singer, Dionne Warwick, will be on the program, as will friends including Alicia Keys, Tyler Perry and gospel stars Donnie McClurklin, Kim Burrell and Cece Winans.

Ray J, who spent time with Houston in her last days, also will be in attendance. In a statement released Friday, he expressed his devastation over her loss and referred to her by her nickname, Nippy.

"Nippy, I miss you so much!" he said.

Aretha Franklin also remembered Houston as Nippy and recalled how Houston used to refer to her as Aunt Ree.

"Hard to believe," Franklin wrote in an email on Thursday, as she prepared to sing at the funeral for the girl she watched growing up.

Houston became near equals with Franklin in terms of fame: Houston is one of the best-selling recording artists of all time, and her fame stretched beyond music, into movies as well. But she never embraced her celebrity and turned to drugs as a way to escape. Her career stalled as her addiction grew more serious, tarnishing her image as America's graceful pop queen.

In another 2009 interview, this time with Oprah Winfrey, Houston talked about how bad her addiction had gotten. She said her mother, Cissy Houston, arrived with a court order, prepared to force her into getting help.

"She said, `I'm not losing you to this world. I'm not losing you to Satan!'" Whitney Houston recalled. "`I want my daughter back.'"

It's unclear if drugs caused her death. Houston was found in a bathtub, underwater, by a member of her staff at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. It will take weeks before toxicology results determine what medications and quantities, if any, were in Houston's system at the time of her death.

But despite her mother's efforts, Houston indeed was lost, at the age of 48. She had appeared to be set for another comeback: She had a new movie, "Sparkle," due out this summer and was working on other projects, including a sequel to "Waiting to Exhale."

After the funeral, Houston is scheduled to be buried beside her father, John Russell Houston, at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, near where she grew up.

They should since she has a school and grant foundation for the arts. She has given a lot to nonprofits art programs and aslo the Whitney Houston school in NJ. Regardless of what she did to herself she did give to others and nobody talks about the good in her. how sad and selfish of reporters

Whitney surpassed Areatha, along time ago. She will be missed and the family and friends gave her a wonderful home going.

Let's not forget about other entertainers such as, Frank Sinatra, Clarence Clemmon that had flag 1/2 staff in NJ upon their deaths. Where was the outcry then?

So glad it's over. Tired of seeing & reading about of it. As usual, they made a circus of it. Where were all these people when she needed them the most? Maybe if they had tried to do something when she was alive, she would still be alive. Instead, they wait until something tragic happens (it's hard to believe no-one saw this coming), have a "by invitation only" funeral service, invite every star you can think of, & televise it. Let's not forget Gov. Christie, who "took it upon himself" to fly the flags at half mast--an honor reserved for men and women who have lost their lives serving our country. It loses all meaning when you start to do it for any big names who just happen to be from your state. Shame on them all.

The Memorial Service arranged for Whitney Houston this past saturday was dignified, inspiering and tasteful and thankfully not the 3-ring circus we as a public have come to expect from celebrity passings - Whitney Houston was if not my favorite singer, in my top 2 or 3, she was the woman whose music makes me remember all my first dates during my early and mid 20's she was the woman you fell in love with along with Kevin Costner in The Bodyguard, she only leaves me with an emptyness like no other celebrity that has passed before - she was my generation, no one had a more beautiful voice and knew how to use it - she was nice person too - I recall meeting here several times in Miami in the late 80's at a place called Williams Island where we were neighbors and her demeanor was always sweet and warm - she would reach out to my toddler at the time and be so sweet with him - I will miss her music and what might have still been for her - for me, Whitney Houston was the greatest female singer of them all.

It was so Anointed as I was talking to family and friends they felt God touching them.

I believe he did it though TV air waves.
Pastor Winans that kept God message short and sweet and very real can I get a Amen.

Thank you Ms.Oprah Winfrey for letting her tell her story that was anoint too. Oh my God Brother Tyler Perry how you so humble to fly her home first class.

This homegoing was amazing! Who else could compel a major news network to cover a church service for four hours with no commercials? WEH took the world to church, a world where being Christian is unpopular, politically incorrect, etc. The Lord used this moment, this life and this death to inspire, uplift and teach. He loves us in spite of ourselves. Some will get it, others won't. Regardless, Whitney's name is written in the Book of Life and He is always good!

Whitney Houston was a very beautiful and talented woman who will be missed. Everyone has their own demons to deal with, most of us are just lucky enough to not have to do it in public. RIP
Whitney. You were one of a kind.

I think this was because of the sheer number of people that attended. You add people to your acquaintance and friendships as your years accumulate. I may have these figures incorrectly but I believe it was said that the New Hope Baptist church would seat about from 1/6th to 1/3rd, as their congregation on an ordinary Sunday, but this Saturday there were thousands more who arrived. Something like from 3,000 to 6,000. It was very crowded. Believe me, the people who attended did have to have the patience "of Saints" because it could not have been that comfortable sitting together for a four hour service.

part two
The Up side that saves all that patience and self-control was that when you think about the music by singular musicians and singers, as well as that by the choir successively through the afternoon, and the sermons, and the eulogies by people such as Kevin Costner who was raised as a Baptist in Compton,California, and her impresario Clyde Davis, and her real bodyguard(not the movie version which was, of course Kevin Costner), it was a funeral unlike what anyone had expected. I think it near wore out Rev. Jesse Jackson who nevertheless stayed to the very end of the service. I did not notice Oprah who it was said was there. Rev. Sharpton who seems to have a lot more endurance since his physical regimen improved him with a reasonable loss of weight; but Rev. Jackson is now very much a much older man. With all that, it was nearly evening; which is why the burial will occur on Sunday.
