NEWARK, N.J.(RNS) Marvin Winans is no stranger to fame. He comes from a musical gospel family known far and wide. Just say "the Winans" and people in the music world know who you're talking about.

Marvin was the premier songwriter for the group, their albums top sellers spanning the 1980s and 1990s. Though he's a gospel giant, he has worked in the secular music world as well, fusing gospel and rhythm and blues with big names such as producer Teddy Riley.

But at the end of the day, those in pastoral and gospel circles say Winans is a preacher and a good one who'll lean on the gospel to eulogize Whitney Houston at the New Hope Baptist Church here in Newark on Saturday (Feb 18).

"He knows how to minister at times like this," said the Rev. Joe Carter, the New Hope pastor who will be officiating. "No preacher has the extreme joy to be put in a position like this. It's one of the challenges to ministers in dark times, but that's where the Word of God comes in."

Winans, a Grammy Award winner, is pastor of the Perfecting Church in Detroit, which he founded in the early 1990s. When you combine his ability to deliver a sermon and his musical background, he is the common-sense and hands-down choice to celebrate Whitney's life at the church where she grew up singing, mesmerizing people with her talent as young as 12 years old.

Winans had a special bond with the pop star, say those who know him and knew Houston. His family has known the Houstons for years. Both are rooted in the church, and Winans married Whitney and R&B singer Bobby Brown, her ex-husband, in 1992. They have appeared onstage together but, more importantly, Winans knows the triumphs and trials of the musical celebrity that were at the center of her life.

"That's important, because one of the clouds over this whole thing has to do with her struggles," said the Rev. DeForest B. Soaries Jr., senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens in Somerset, N.J. "I think Marvin will be able to handle the task of broadening people's understanding of the pressures of being Whitney Houston. He's had more fame than most preachers. It uniquely qualifies him to help us understand some of these issues."

Winans' main challenge, however, will be to uplift the family's spirit. Yes, he'll talk about Houston, whom he has described as his sister. And more than likely, he will be moved to sing, a style of ministry that is upbeat, inspiring, bringing another dimension to the service while staying focused on Houston's life and contributions.

Stefanie Minatee, artistic director of Jubilation Inc., a well-known Newark choir, said Winans is one of the most beloved male vocalists in the gospel industry. She said he's very well respected not only for his music, but also as a preacher of the gospel.

Whatever he does from the pulpit won't be planned. "We move by how God directs us," Minatee said. "He (Winans) is always led by God. God will decide what he'll do so he'll be a comfort for the family. We're praying the Lord will give words of comfort so the family can move on. I'm sure he'll be prayerful that God will give him what to say and what to sing," she said.

The service will be attended by superstars and celebrities, mega-personalities, legends. It is certain to be a celebration filled with voices the Rev. Jesse Jackson says will make you think of a Scripture often quoted at times like this.

"Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning," Jackson said. "We rejoice through our pain. Celebration is a form of healing."

No one knows when that joy will come for the Houstons or for anybody who has lost a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend. It varies from one family to the next.

"Religion does not help you get over your loss," Soaries said. "It helps you get through the pain."

But for Saturday, you just have to trust that Winans will get the family to smile through their tears. And when that happens, you'll understand why they felt he was the best person for this going-home service.

I only watched part of the funeral. Kevin Costner had just started talking when I began watching it. It seemed clear to me she was very much loved and missed. Just because these mourners weren't always making th news as trying to help her kick her addictions, doesn't mean anything. No matter how much Whitney was loved, only she could kick her addictions.

Regarding Whitney Houston: As they used her in life, they continue to use her in death; there is a lot to be learned about the way she lived her life, the way she died and the people who claim to have known and loved her. Where is Jesus in all of this? I watched the beginning to the end and my spirit was grieved as I watched people use her funeral to showboat and to get their 5 minutes of fame The professing christians were some of the same ones with her in the dark, dark night clubs (satan's domain), while others who profess Jesus pulled her further into the hollywood life only to further fellowship and have friendship with the world (Sparkle), then there were the ones that sing their gospel songs in order to gain fame and fortune from the world (satan's bait) rather then allowing God to use them to draw souls to Jesus. These people who profess Jesus and claimed to be her friend also turned a blind eye to her self-destruction. I am sure that many at the funeral feel that she is worth more dead then alive and they are seeking to find ways that they can prosper from her death. Little do they know that they are in the same sinking boat!

Beautiful message for Whitney Houstons funeral. Very up lifting and scripture brought to life with understanding and meaning. "America went to church today" and that needs to happen more often. Marvin Winans should have a nationally televised ministry so his great message reaches more people. Great tribute to Whitney who in my opinion was the greatest female artist ever. I have used the words and music from her song "Greatest Love of All" to inspire young people at our graduation ceermomies on more than one occasion. May messages of love live on for eternity.

The service was beautiful for a woman who represented the "love" in lovely. Whitney Houston generated love, not just by her amazing voice but her gentle caring ways. She was able to look past the mistakes people made in life and celebrated their good qualities. I hope she will always be remembered for who she really was, an angel- not the demons that took over her life. Rest in peace Whitney, we will always love you.

We live in a drug culture heroin addicts under treatment are put on methadone. Entertainers after misuse of booze and illegal drugs are given prescriptions by scrupulous and at times unscrupulous physicians. So what is all the fuss about, Whitney Houston was a fabulous talent singing, acting etc. thats how she will be remembered, her funeral service was a tribute to that everything else is media fill in time.

Why all the hate? No one in her family or friends are denying Whitney's demons. There is a time and a place for that discussion, and today is not the day.

Greetings My Friends:

Pastor Winans hit the ball out of the park! His Eulogy of our sister will live on, Eternally! May Whitney Houston Live Eternally in Peace! Mr. Jesse Jackson didn't get the recognition that he came for. What a godly service fit for an Angel. Whitney, I will always love you!

Governor Christie honored the world when he stood up to undue criticism and ordered the flag to be flown at half mast. Governor you have my vote....because it was the right thing to do!

God Bless You All!

Christie was wrong. I certainly understand why he did it but it goes totally against US Code.

Greetings Bob:

Under the laws of the State of New Jersey Governor Christie was correct. As the Governor of the State of New Jersey he can enter any executive order that he wants to enter. After all, New Jersey is a sovereign state and in this matter, not bound by the United States Code.

Whitney had a great, rare voice and beauty and it is understandable the effect her death has on many - BUT where is the voice of the liberal press and the so called intellectual hollywood types which should be talking up the destroying effects of drugs - By their silence they condon it.

Get her buried and hush about all this. She's going to rot just like everybody else does. It's not like there won't be other singers and artists coming along who will be better. But with all our dead soldiers coming home in a body bag some of them is not even mentioned let alone a funeral. They are the real stars. I bet if this had been a white woman very little would be said about it. But she's black and you'd think she was a gjoddess of some kind. Like I say just another soon to be rotting flesh so fortune and fame means nothing to maggotts.

Please.....Can we stop honoring Whitney Houston! Why do we honor an alcholic drug user and shun our real heros? I am so SICK, SICK, SICK of reading and hearing about how great she was. We all agree that she had a wonderful voice, before she became so hooked on drugs and alcohol, but she chose her path in life! I'm sorry she couldn't control her drinking and drug usage, but please, lets not make her someone to look up to. Do you really want our young people to look up to that. Even her daughter is having the same problems now, is that what you want for your children? No, then stop honoring her. The media didn't make that much of a deal over other well known singers, so why Whitney? Hmmmm?

Whitney died of a disease and people shouldn't judge her.. She was a wonderful talent, an American beauty.. Her songs live in my memory for some of the greatest times of my life, and I will be forever grateful to have had her talent from God given to all of us..And I am a Conservative.

I hope the salvation message of repentance and Jesus Christ is given as the only answer for eternal life. No compromises just because Hollywood Left is there, and what state when Whitney left.
