Meryl Streep isn't the only Hollywood star sitting on nearly three decades of Academy Awards losses. Woody Allen has been nominated nine times in the Best Original Screenplay category since his last Oscar win ("Hannah and Her Sisters" at the 1987 ceremony) and eleven times overall. If you take stock in the Writers Guild Awards, however, Allen may break his streak of futility at next Sunday's 84th annual Academy Awards.
Allen won Best Original Screenplay at the WGA Awards on Sunday night for "Midnight in Paris," besting the scripts for "50/50," "Bridesmaids," "Win Win" and "Young Adult." Unfortunately for Allen fans hoping this is a sign of things to come, only Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo's work on "Bridesmaids" is up for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards alongside "Midnight in Paris." Because it was written outside the bounds of Writers Guild of America, Michel Hazanavicius's script for "The Artist" was not eligible for the WGA award, but stands a good chance of earning an Oscar -- assuming the Best Picture favorite receives a surge of support across the board from Academy voters.
Things are a little more settled on the Best Adapted Screenplay side: Alexander Payne, Jim Rash and Nat Faxon won the WGA award for adapting "The Descendants," and will likely do the same next week.
