Bethenny Frankel Reveals On 'Today Show' That She Had A Miscarriage

First Posted: 02/20/2012 11:49 am Updated: 02/20/2012 11:47 pm

For the past few years, Bethenny Frankel has put her life on television for the world to see, but the "Bethenny Ever After" star revealed a personal tragedy on the "Today Show" Monday morning.

"We were pregnant with a second baby and at eight weeks I miscarried," Frankel said. "That was a very emotional experience and it had a lot of different things that came with it. Thinking about women who can't have their own baby, even the first baby, I'm lucky."

Frankel, who is mom to daughter Bryn, 21 months, also admitted she's doesn't know if she and husband Jason Hoppy will have another child, and that's she's not sure what her options are right now, considering she's 41.

In addition to talking about her miscarriage, Frankel also shared on "Today" that she recently had another health scare: an ulcer.

"I took an antibiotic pill at night without a full glass of water and it burned a hole in my esophagus," she said. "I thought I was dying."

Frankel was on the mend after a few weeks, and is now ready for everyone to see her daily drama on the new season of "Bethenny Ever After," which premieres Monday night on Bravo. One personal hurdle Frankel and Hoppy tackle on the small screen involves them trying to keep their marriage happy and healthy, which isn't always easy.

"Are there strains in my marriage? Absolutely," she said. "Do we have issues? Absolutely ... There are strains in every part of my life. I don't know what everyone else does. This is my experience and I try to be the best person I can, the best wife I can. This show is a depiction of what's going on in my life."

Frankel, a self-proclaimed "workaholic," also shared her thoughts on her evolving marriage with the L.A. Times.

"I crammed everything I could possibly do in the first couple of seasons," she said of getting married and having a baby with Hoppy. "Now you’ll see us actually settle in and without the fuss of getting ready for a wedding or a baby, there’s less preoccupation and that can be a little strange. We’re different people, and that can lead to tense situations. And it’s something we still work through."

can i please say one thing that no one is saying? i LOVE Bethenny but an esophaogeal ulcer from taking an antibiotic without water? Bethenny, please. You have said over and over you were bulimic for years and you are now healthy? you are still bulimic; it shows in your jaw, in your cheeks and now you have an ulcer from the acid from vomitting. i never pegged you for a hypocrite.

I've been a fan of Bethenny since she first came on to Real Housewives of NYC, and I am not the type to watch such "trashy" reality shows. I love that she's strong and outspoken and clever and hilarious. I want this woman as my mentor.

I don't know who she is, and although I'm positive it was very unpleasant and sad for them, the word "tragedy" is overused, IMO. I'm glad she mentioned it, though. Miscarriage is very common. Something like 25% of pregancies end in miscarriage. Yet, because people tend to keep it private, when it happens to you, you can feel like you are all alone in the experience.

Guess you never had one...

You'd be wrong, and it was a sad and difficult time. I'm not saying everyone experiences loss the same way, but I just have problem with that word in particular. It may or may not have felt like a tragedy to this woman.

You just proved marianproletarian's point.

Yeah, I kinda agree that it's not "tragic", but it really depends on the person, their personality, how far along they are, and how many they've had.

My first one was very emotional and difficult. The next two were not. I tend to be practical about it "well, there was something genetically wrong." It makes it only a little bit easier.

Later miscarriages...15 weeks or later...THOSE are probably pretty tragic.

Yes, I agree. I had one at 10 weeks when my first and only child was 3, and it was sad, but not a tragic to me. If it had been my first born that I tried so hard for and was so thrilled about, I think it would have felt like a personal tragedy, especially further along into the pregnacy. I have a friend who had three in a row before she found out she had a physical problem. The third one was at 6 months after she was sure she was past the risky point (which is technically not a miscarriage but a stillborn). This was a terrible thing, indeed.

I thought she HAD a miscarriage on the Today Show, phew. I thought , Now that's taking reality TV too far!

Money makes the world go around and she wants it all!

I don't know if I'll keep watching her show. I am sorry to hear they miscarried a baby. I watched a few minutes last night and went back to watching Hoarders. She is to amped to watch just as I'm trying to relax and go to sleep. Wish her and her husband luck. Her baby girl is a little sweetheart. And If they don't have anymore they are blessed with one. Put her first and reality TV down to 8 or 9 on your list

you can have up to 3 miscarriages before doctors will even think something is wrong with you or there is a problem with you.
02:56 PM on 02/21/2012
Can't things be private? Do we need to know this?
07:52 PM on 02/21/2012
Private. Get over yourself. Now if women could just admit to abortions on live t.v.
22 minutes ago ( 5:48 PM)
Why should a woman have to admit anything to you? It's none of your business. Miscarriages, abortions, medical problems should be private issues; not fodder for the public to gossip about. Too bad people feel the need to publicly announce things that should be kept to themselves.
02:29 PM on 02/21/2012
Please, this is NOT a tragedy. A miscarriage is a sad event, but not a tragedy. Be grateful for the ones you have.
05:55 PM on 02/21/2012
Many people consider the loss of innocent life to be a tragedy...hopefully you will never become a mother.
02:30 AM on 02/22/2012
But that is not what a miscarriage is.
11:12 AM on 02/22/2012
Wow - I hope you never have one. To those of us who DID have one it is a TRAGIC event. Trust me, I went through the tragedy twice!!!
01:26 PM on 02/21/2012
Gee! So many people that don't care or don't know who Bethanny is....yadda-yadda-yadda.....yet you clicked on this story to read and went on to comment about it. Makes no sense other than to put down somebody because you can.
I like Bethanny. And for what she was hired to do, she is probably the most "real" out of all those chicks. To take that opportunity, and turn it into a fortune is a smart, funny, businesswoman. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but I enjoy watching her and am glad she is clear of that fake group of women with her own show. It's a guilty pleasure, but I like listening to her point of view, for the most part. The fact that she mentions this on a show is pure Bethanny. She reminds me of a female Howard Stern. But, ya'll probably don't like hime either!
Go find something you like and post about that. You'll feel better the rest of the day!! :):)
02:59 PM on 02/21/2012
we clicked on it because were sick of tired of her kind who are not important at all and are just self centered egotists. We want to see her get a little more sense thats all.
04:18 PM on 02/21/2012
I hear ya. But, couldn't that be said for most movie stars and TV people? I respect her for making a successful business out of a product, rather than just relying on being like a "famous for being famous" person. $120 mil is nothing to sneeze at, and I don't have to buy it.....unlike gasoline!...:):) I like seeing people do well with a buy-choice product when they've worked so hard to get there which isn't easy in this day and age. To me, that's a person I can listen to, and maybe pick up a few pointers!!

What kind of people put their private lives on TV? I know they do it for the money. So that really says a lot about the depth of trading a real life for an onscreen one. And then they complain, wha wha wha. I know these shows were designed to distract people from bettering their own lives. If only people would finally say, enough, I'm off to live my life..and not on TV. It's all fake anyway, done for ratings. The badder the better. Get real, and I mean a REAL life.

The fascination people have with telling everything about their lives on the news while crying is sad. There is no such thing as discretion anymore. People argue about their right to privacy, but then they'll go and tantalizingly tell everything or star in a reality show...
01:09 PM on 02/21/2012
The real tragedy is that people actually spent $$ on that horrible syrup Skinny Girl. It tastes like a margarita the same way cough medicine tastes like bourbon.
