Nets Beat Knicks: Deron Williams Handles Linsanity This Time

Knicks Nets Deron Williams

BRIAN MAHONEY   02/20/12 11:36 PM ET  AP

NEW YORK — Linsanity started against the New Jersey Nets, and this time All-Star guard Deron Williams was determined not to be embarrassed by the Harvard guy again.

Williams scored a season-high 38 points, outplaying Jeremy Lin and leading the Nets to a 100-92 victory over the New York Knicks on Monday night.

Lin began his remarkable run against the Nets about two weeks ago, but Williams and the Nets were ready for him this time.

Lin finished with 21 points, nine assists and seven rebounds, but Williams outscored him 36-11 through three quarters, when the Nets led by 18. Lin shot only 7 of 18 and the Knicks lost for the second time in 10 games since his emergence against the Nets on Feb. 4.

"I think me in particular didn't come with the defensive energy we needed. Obviously, Deron Williams going for 30-whatever he had is not going to get it done," Lin said. "So I needed to come out with more energy, the team needed to come out with more energy and I think at the end of the day, I think that's why the team lost."

Carmelo Anthony, clearly rusty in his return from a seven-game absence with a strained right groin, shot 4 of 11 and scored 11 points.

Williams scored 18 in the third quarter, including 12 straight Nets points during one surge. Clearly amped up for the rematch – maybe too much so, because he fouled out with 3:07 left – he skipped across the court with three fingers in the air after burying a second straight 3-pointer during his blistering stretch.

MarShon Brooks had 18 points for the Nets in their third game in three nights.

They shut down a Knicks offense that rang up 104 points against the defending champion Dallas Mavericks on Sunday, when Lin had 28 points and a career-best 14 assists.

But Williams was locked in this time, and the U.S. Olympian could've gone for plenty more if not for spending most of the fourth quarter on the bench in foul trouble. But by then he had the Nets too far ahead for the Knicks to catch.

Williams, who shot 7 of 19 in the first meeting, made eight 3-pointers and was 10 of 22 overall on Monday.

"I don't think Deron Williams needs much of a prod," Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said. "That's one of the best guards in the league. Jeremy still got 21 and nine. He had a great game, good game. Deron had a great game and that'll be that way sometimes. Again, I'm not big on the matchups just because it's a team thing and as a team we just didn't perform very well."

The Knicks had their five-game winning streak against the Nets snapped and failed again to move back over .500.

Baron Davis had three points in 9 minutes in his Knicks debut after overcoming a herniated disk in his back. Expected to be the starter whenever he became available, he'll be Backup Baron as long as Lin keeps it up.

The Knicks were 8-15, coming off losses on consecutive nights, and had already fallen into a double-digit hole against the Nets on Feb. 4 when Lin got his chance, coming off the bench for 25 points in a 99-92 victory.

So uncertain of his NBA future at the time that he refused to get his own place to live, Lin slept on teammate Landry Fields' couch the night before that game.

The days of sleeping on couches and riding the benches are long gone.

Lin had since averaged 25 points and 9.2 assists, the most remarkable story in the NBA this season. And even the Nets have been impressed. Coach Avery Johnson praised Lin and downplayed the notion that his stats were a product of D'Antoni's system, though Johnson also wasn't buying a certain comparison that has been popping up more regularly.

"I've heard a lot of different stories and even I got a question from even my daughter whether Lin was in (Steve) Nash's category. So we don't want to go there, OK?" he said. "It's only been nine games. Give the kid a chance.

"It's a great story and he's inspiring a lot of kids, but let's give the kid a chance to play a whole season, maybe even play a playoff series, before you know, we start putting him in Nash's category."

Nor is he in Williams' category. The All-Star point guard was in constant motion with or without the ball, powering his way to the basket on drives or hitting from well beyond the 3-point arc – once while being fouled by Lin for a four-point play.

It was a learning experience for Lin, anonymous last month but a marked man in the league now.

Knicks ratings have surged – Sunday's victory earned ABC's third-highest overnight rating ever for a non-Christmas broadcast – and celebrities are packing Madison Square Garden again. New parents Jay-Z, a part-owner of the Nets, and Beyonce were in the crowd for this one.

Lin graced the cover of Sports Illustrated and was the subject of a sketch on "Saturday Night Live" and there's no telling how far his celebrity will rise. The online sports book bovada.lv even is giving 5 to 1 odds he'll go on a date before the NBA finals are over with Kim Kardashian, split from Nets forward Kris Humphries.

Humphries, booed as usual since their brief marriage, had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and drew technicals on the Knicks when Anthony tried to trip him and when Tyson Chandler followed him to the bench jawing during a timeout.

The only question left for Lin was what he would do with Anthony, who was hurt 6 minutes into Lin's starting debut two nights after that Nets game. Both players scoffed at the idea that Anthony would mess it up, and Anthony has even said he went to D'Antoni and told him to give Lin more minutes – though the coach had no recollection of it.

Anthony's first basket came off a connection with Lin, setting a pick and popping out for a jumper. But the Knicks' offense went stagnant in the second quarter, and Williams took over the game in the third.

Notes: Knicks rookie Iman Shumpert sat out with a left knee injury and will be re-evaluated after the All-Star break. ... Nets C Brook Lopez, who just returned Sunday after breaking his foot in the preseason, sat out as part of the plan to not play him yet on back-to-back nights. ... The Knicks honored former coach Joe Lapchick, and players Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton and John Rucker as part of their "Pioneer Night: A Celebration In Black History." Clifton was the first African-American to play for the Knicks, though Rucker preceded him by two weeks in training camp in 1950, becoming the first African-American to wear the team's uniform.

This is the third time that the NY Knicks had lost to relatively inferior teams- Raptors, Hornets- and recently the Nets, which they trounced last meeting. The truth of the matter is...Mr.D'Antoni got cocky and reckless, having defeated the defending champion Mavericks. He thought that this game could be like a practice session with the premature appearance of Mr. Carmelo, who even has the gall to say that he was taking his time adjusting to the play. What in God's name was he thinking? Mr. Lin was in his usual great play, so the burden of this debacle rested heavily on an overconfident coach and a misguided star player.Amen.

I became a Knicks fan last night mainly due to the effort I saw out of Melo. He was eager to set picks for the pick and roll like I've never seen him before and I've watched him since HS. This team next year will be tough to beat. It takes time to build chemistry.

Lin has found the right system for him to be successful in. This seemingly wide open offense take a high basketball IQ to run. There is more than meets the eye to this offense including proper spacing along with when where and who to run the pick an roll with. It's one of the more fun offenses to watch when it's being run correctly. If the elite PG's got to run this offense they would all average 30 and 10. Paul and Williams can score at will but are saddled by the systems they run. If you can protect the ball, break a defender down( usually just one because of spacing) dish in the lane, kick it out, finish or pull up for your own jumper, then you can run this offense. Sounds like a lot but thats what a big time college PG should be able to do coming into the pros. Nick Van Excel was one of the best to run this style of offense. It's who Nash patterned his game after.

Carmelo Anthony was guarding Deshawn Stevenson who scored 11 points
Jeremy Lin was guarding Deron Williams who scored 38 points

Its painfully obvious why the Knicks lost last night!

Yes, guarding Deshawn Stevenson (3.1 ppg average) was an enviable task.

I personally dont think this game is not going to be the ultimate showdown, because i dont think the Knicks are ready to take on Miami at their best. I'm looking forward to the week after the break when the Knicks have only one game, and can use practices to get everyone up to speed on playing with each other.......the pieces are now there

Few thoughts....FWIW.

Deron Williams was amazing knocking down the 3's!

There is definitely a noticeable difference in chemistry last night. In the past 2 weeks, when Lin is teamed with Chandler, Fields, Shumpert, Jefferies, Novak, Walker, and even JR Smith ...... these guys collectively play great DEFENSE and at a fast pace.

When Lin is teamed with Stoudemire and Anthony......the pace seems slower and there is NO DEFENSE from those two! What's up with that? No one is even bothering to block shots near the net, or even attempt to rebound balls offensively. Anthony was rusty to say the least.

Lastly, in the 1st 10 minutes of the game when the Knicks were up by 10 and DID have some sort of flow going on, it made absolutely no sense for the coach to bench Lin, Stoudemire, and Anthony at that point. They not only lost the lead after that point but they never got that flow and momentum back.

Its not Amare and Melo's job to cover Williams. It was Lin's, and he failed.

My point was simply comparing the noticeable difference in how the TEAM as a whole played DEFENSE in the last 7 games compared to last nights game.
01:59 PM on 02/21/2012
Perhaps, but it would've been hard for almost ANYONE to guard Williams when he's shooting like that. It was unusual, it's not like he's been known to put up those kinds of numbers. Having said that, it'll be interesting to see how Lin matches up w/ guards the like of Westbrook, Paul, or Rose -- except for Paul, they're the kind of point guards that often look for their shot more times then they want to pass. However, Lin CAN play, he just will have a harder time guarding the quicker, slashier type of point guards.

But there was no doubt that the chemistry we'd been seeing past couple of weeks was skewed: there seemed to be no discernible post-defense, and big-men had issues w/ scoring high-percentage shots - lay-ups/dunks, and Williams 'shook the hell' out of Lin multiple times. Although it's VERY hard to stop a guy who was hitting numerous times from way out past the 3, with a hand in his face. As for the inclusion of Melo, I simply believe they have the pieces, it'll be up to D'Antoni to put them all together.

Totally Agree with your assessment! The team seamed really slow and it looked like Lin was uncomfortable and couldn't get his mojo on after the 1st quarter! As a fan who cried the day the Knicks gave up half the team for Melo, I am willing to give him a little slack due to his being away for the last week while the Knicks looked the best we've seen them in a long while but only a little slack!

When fans got carried away with Lin's early successes I said let us wait until teams get their second look at him. Now they know how to guard him, now they know his skills and limitations. That is why Deron Williams excelled. Williams always had that ability but was apprently "dogging" it, not performing to his ability. But after Lin embarrassed him he threw off his lethargy and performed close to his ability. So I am glad when the league gets people like Lin who always push it. His opponents will have to step up.

WIlliams is an ALL STAR and Olympian. Lin has played a total of TEN games in the NBA.
It would have been embarassing if Williams couldn't beat Lin after watching how Lin plays in the last NINE games. Williams was mentally and physically prepared.

At some point this excuse of how few games Lin has played is going to run out. You cant praise him for only playing 10 games, and then use it as an excuse when he loses. Its getting old.
04:58 PM on 02/21/2012
well the second time the nets saw Lin, he had 21pts, 9 assistsm 7 rebounds, 4 steals and only 3 turnovers..........yep.they sure solved him....lol......Deron Williams is one of the best players in the game and could have a game like that any time....and lin doesnt have to be a lock down defender to be a very good pg

I didn't mean to give you the impression I was talking about J.L., but the Knicks as a whole. The Coaches system is suppose to be great for scoring (a la, Steve Nash), but puts defense on the back burner.

I was talking about the Knicks as a whole. I'll probably have to specify in future post. Apparently the Knicks coach isn't big on defense and chooses to win games with hard driven offense.

Yea, illiams handled thLinsanity because Davis and Anthony ,not to mention Smith taking his minute's away. they lost the chemistry. If this keeps up with lost minutes for Lin expect more loses.
10:20 AM on 02/21/2012
He had 37 minutes, are you kidding? He went 7-18, that's a 38% completion rate, yet he kept dashing up shots. Anthony only had 11 attempts. It should be the other way around, with Melo having 20 attempts and Lin 11-12. He's a PG, he needs to facilitate better.
05:01 PM on 02/21/2012
i guess no one noticed the 21pts, 9 assists, 7 rebounds, 4 steals and only 3 turnovers.....no one handled Linsanity, rather, one of the games best players had a great game, and the rest of the knicks played like a high school team

The Knicks are not going to go undefeated for the rest of the season. They had a great win over Dallas and a loss against the Nets. The team will get better as they gel. The media did the same thing with the Heat last year. Expecting them to win it all their first season together and bashing them every time they didn't win a game. I'm looking forward to seeing what the Knicks can do and the Lin story is a good one.

I don't think the media is doing any more than reporting what happened in each game. I haven't read any analysis of the games that indicated that it was expected that the Knicks and Lin should win every game nor bashing them.

The Knicks went 7-2 in the most brutal stretch of their schedule, with three back to backs. Davis and Anthony are clearly rusty, the team did not shoot very well. This was not Williams v.s. Lin.

I don't disagree that Davis and Anthony are rusty, but if you are talking about strength of schedule, this wasn't their most brutal stretch. They've played only two teams (maybe 3) above .500. Their schedule will now get brutal.

The Knicks are not yet an elite team; therefore, back to backs are against teams that are not necessarily inferior teams. I was addressing the frequency of the games; since Lin took over, they have had three back to backs.
05:03 PM on 02/21/2012
its true that most of the games on that streak were not against top teams, however, its also true that the knicks were playing without their 2 biggest talents during the same stretch

Deron proved he is an elite guard in the NBA last night. Jeremy Lin didn't play bad either, but the Knicks need more time to gel with a starting lineup of Lin, Fields, Anthony, Stoudamire and Chandler. I do wonder if Shumpert had played, if he would have affected Deron Williams' game?
