Women In Power: Presidents, Prime Ministers And Chancellors

For many of us, President's day just means an extra day off work and the chance to hit up the holiday sales. But, as we recall from our school days, it’s actually more than that. What originally began as a day to honor the birth of George Washington has evolved into a grand celebration of the office itself -- an office that has, so far, only been occupied by men.

Not that American women haven’t taken a shot at it. A handful have made memorable runs for the Presidency -- from Victoria Woodhull and Belva Ann Lockwood in the nineteenth century, to Shirley Chisholm and Hillary Clinton in our lifetime. (Gracie Allen even did a brief run in 1940, under the banner of the Surprise Party!)

But America has never leapt over that final gender barrier by electing a woman to our highest office -- and the interesting thing is, so many countries around the world have achieved that equality.

Familiar to all of us are women like Margaret Thatcher, Indira Ghandi and Benazir Bhutto, all of whom made history. But they were just the tip of the spear. There is currently a whole new generation of women with real power across six continents, all of them living proof to young girls and women that hard work, education, dedication and a true passion to lead can make it possible for any of them to rise up and reach their greatest potential.

In an election year such as this, it's good to reflect on the past and think about the future. We all have our favorite Presidents, and it’s great to take a moment to honor them. But wouldn’t it be inspiring if we could at last join all those other nations with a woman leader of our own?

When that day comes (and if Hillary taught us anything in 2008, its that that day is just around the corner), we will be one step closer to being a nation in which gender, race, creed and sexual orientation are no longer issues in the workplace -- or in politics.

Until that time, take a look at some of the current women in power around the globe. I’m sure you’ll recognize some of their names, but you may find a few surprises too! -- Marlo Thomas

With all these woman in pwoer over the world how come things are so bad? Most of the countries that they lead are given U.S. Tax dollars to keep them going. So what is the big deal. Wait till America gets a Woman President, just wait and see how things will change. Woman don't do any better at leading a country then men do. Its all about the money honey.
11:05 PM on 02/28/2012
Probably no better, and no worse.
12:09 AM on 02/29/2012
It's not even about doing better leading, we aren't even given the chance. We don't base our votes on who could run the country better, we base them on mostly religous beliefs. Should we really be all that concerned about birth control right now? Why should women be refused by health insurance to cover birth control when a man has the right to get viagra? Because of religous beleifs. Church and state are supposed to be seperate. Pick a candidate who will fix our economy, man or woman. We wouldn't know who could do better because all they talk about is beliefs. But, in all actuality, you're right, money controls everything. Even if we did get a good president, with good intentions, our government stands in its own way. Anything that can benefit the most gets rejected by the few. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Yes but it is not how it works. Reglion comes to play in each election, sorry to say. I agree with everything you said. It just don't work that way.

...the titles of the real women that run things are "Mother in Law"....(kinda looks like Hulk Hogan, but she has a better mustache).....
08:29 PM on 02/28/2012
They should be @ home taking care of the house and keeping bratty pants on the ground kids in line..
12:01 AM on 02/29/2012
Yup. Be the same as running America!
06:08 AM on 02/23/2012
Yep. And here in America we still have politicians braying about birth control and abortion and a roster of male chauvinist-fundamentalist fanatics aiming for high office. Pretty depressing.

The rest of the world is evolving ..... meanwhile we're moving inexorably back into the Dark Ages.

Until we have absolute gender equality and put religion back where it belongs in personal and not public life, we're not going to go anywhere but backwards. America and the radical Islamic countries are alone in their attitudes to their special claims to God .... and their poor record of women's rights. The rest of the world marches forward.
11:07 PM on 02/28/2012
You must live a different America than I do, or maybe you just fall for every scary story you here.
11:45 PM on 02/28/2012
I've lived in four countries in the Far East .....and Canada for most of my adult life .... and believe me I'm scared to death by what I'm seeing right here now in America. It's the fact that these nut cases are actually being listened to, are getting media coverage and are running for high office.

I used to think the crazies only got into power in Third World countries. Now I see them running for office here and seriously being considered by large numbers of people. The fact that they have any credibility at all is terrifying.

It's not "scary stories" whch are unnerving me. It's DIRECT quotes from some of these would-be nominees which are horrifying.

Since the presidency in Israel is just ceremonial the PM is the most important figure. Golda Meir was perhaps the smartest and the most respected of them all including by her enemies. She was a superb strategist and a brilliant economist.

The author left out Valerie Jarrett... senior advisor to the person who currently occupies the oval office. She is largely responsible for his running for that office and pulls most of the strings in the the nation's capitol that are under his authority.

The Presidency of India is purely ceremonial. The Prime Minister, who has all the power is a man.
Just like in the United Kingdom. The head of state is a woman but the Prime Minister is a man.

Last time, when Indira Gandhi was assassinated in 1984. The person who is the power behind the throne now, however, is Sonia Gandhi, the widow of Rajiv Gandhi, son of Indira. She is president of the majority party and is not Prime Minister because she is a foreigner, Italian. It was thought when her party won that it would be politically better to have an Indian as Prime minister. But a brilliant, very competent woman.

Sorta like when Maggie Thatcher was PM in England and they kicked Argentine butt, huh? You think women leaders don't fight wars? Read some history and then come back and pretend to be even smarter.
