15 Colleges Where Geek Is Chic

First Posted: 02/21/2012 11:45 am   Updated: 02/21/2012 11:45 am

Not every college is tailored toward the student who grew up wearing sweater vests and obsessing over their new TI-83 calculator.

However, there are some schools, both public and private, where a geek would fit in well.

Here are 15 chosen by Inside College's experts, in alphabetical order below. What do you think? Which ones did they miss?

You missed a big geek school that is geekier than several of the mild examples you gave. That school is Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (The 'Tute) in Troy, NY. Most of the others on your list are just amateurs.

you forgot about Carleton! Haven't experience both Carleton and CWRU, Carleton belongs much more than CWRU.

Carnegie Tech still exists, only it's now just the engineering school within CMU.

Considering the fact that Rose Hulman's mascot is the Fightin' Engineer, I dare say they deserve their spot on this list.

Need to add Michigan Technological University to this list.

Hockey schools need not apply. Virginia Tech would be on the list before Michigan Tech.

Every time I hear Swarthmore, I think of that song by the Mamas and the Papas.

In hindsight, I really wish I had taken a closer look at Rice. Everyone I've met who attended seems very smart, very well-educated, and very down to Earth. Must be a fun place to get a top-quality education.

UCSD also has Blacks Beach - clothing optional - right at the edge of the campus.

Then do what the conservative Christians do and stand on the end of the glider runway with high-power binoculars and comment about the "immoral" nude people on the beach.

Actually there is a nice road with a fairly easy slope down to the beach from the edge of the campus.

UCSD started out as a graduate level only university (Scripps), then later added science and engineering upper classes and only after quite a few years finally added freshmen and sophomores. It wasn't until the lower division was added that they needed humanities (the standard general education classes) . When they added the medical school the humanities folks were really, really out numbered by the engineers, scientist and doctors. It is a great school with very rigorous academics.

lol UCSD and good school in the same sentence? Not even in the top 30 =/

My son applied to Worcester. Don't know if he would like to hear it's one of the geekiest.

Let's be honest here. It wasn't a TI-83. It was a TI-89.

Johns Hopkins, Reed, Swarthmore, and UCSD over RPI, Renssalear Polytechnic Institute? Kinda like PolitiFact, if you can't get them right, don't do them...
