Bob Marshall, Virginia Lawmaker, Responds To 'Saturday Night Live' Skit (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: 02/21/12 08:24 PM ET  |  Updated: 02/21/12 09:19 PM ET

The sponsor of Virginia's "fetal personhood" bill and a supporter of controversial legislation that would force women to have a medically unnecessary ultrasound before an abortion apparently has a sense of humor.

Over the weekend, 'Saturday Night Live' mocked both bills in a segment on birth control called "Really!?!"

"The Virginia House of Representatives this week passed a bill that required women to have a trans-vaginal ultrasound before having an abortion," joked Amy Poehler. "Now don't get me wrong, I love transvaginal. It's my favorite airline."

Seth Meyers took on the"fetal personhood" bill that would give legal rights to a human fertilized egg.

"They also passed a bill saying life begins at conception," said Meyers. "What's next? Life begins at last call? Life begins when you click send on your Match.com profile?"

Virginia House of Representatives Delegate Bob Marshall responded to the segment in an interview with Sarah Bloom of NBC12 in Richmond, Va., in which he cracked some jokes of his own.

"I was scandalized, shocked at the rampant sexist nature of this," Marshall said with faux outrage. "This chauvinist Seth answers a question about pregnancy when in fact, it should have been Baby Momma who answers the question about pregnancy. I’ll bet Seth has never been pregnant."

Marshall became straight-faced when he defended the bills, however, telling Bloom that people need to read the personhood bill before judging it.

"It doesn't abolish abortion. It doesn't get rid of birth control. It doesn't affect in vitro," he said. "The major effect on this is to say that before birth, there's a human being there, and there's a case for a wrongful death."

Marshall has his sights set on Washington. He's indicated he will run for the U.S. Senate, challenging former Sen. George Allen (R-Va.) for the GOP nomination.

It was my pleasure to turn down an offer to sign Bob Marshall's ballot access petition when I finished voting in today's Republican primary. His circulator seemed shocked when I said I heard him speak and knew about his record in the legislature. Caution to others: If you don't know anything about a race, issue, or candidate, don't sign a petition just to be "nice." You could be aiding a jerk like Marshall even if he would be a challenge to a jerk like Allen. This Republican woman is not a happy camper.

So there going to investigate every miscarriage for wrong full death. Lock up pregnant women if they are going to do something that will possibly harm the fertilized egg?

Why stop at fertilized eggs... all of the eggs are potential life.

We really do have enough people on the planet already.

I have an idea... I'll stop criticizing the "fetal personhood" bill when every politician agrees to a bill that forces them to take a proficiency test on the matters at hand before they vote on any bill, submit to urine testing in order to get their government paychecks, enact a law that forces every political and super PAC donation to be on the record, submit to immediate fact checking during their tv appearances, complete with a rating on screen based on their past performance, and make all their phone records public. If they're good with that, I'll accept their lamebrained "laws." Fair enough???

I like the approach of one state pol who introduced a bill requiring a colonoscopy before granting a scrip for Viagra.

If "life" begins at conception, Bob, then why does your GOD end so MANY pregnancies before they are ever born? Hmmmmm?

If a person, other than the mother or her doctor, causes the death of a fetus, that person can be charged with murder.

Marshall is an old man...nothing more to be said.

The typical response of a bigoted R winger from VA... "baby momma" shows the level of class this guy has.

And the personhood wouldn't outlaw abortion... it'd just open the door to trying women who get them in wrongful death cases. That's all.

i think the baby momma was a reference to amy poehler's role in the movie "Baby Mama" where she played a surrogate mother for Tina Fey.
03:28 PM on 02/24/2012
Yeah... I'm sure that's the reference this guy was using???

Would this guy make it a felony if a man were to masturbate and not get a woman pregnant? These guys are so bigoted they can't get their bible thumping out of the public lawmaking

This phony bill was ginned up courtesy of the alliance between medical tech manufacturers (who give big money to Rethuglycants) and officials with their palms out.

If this bill passes, ladies, do your duty and practice CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE.

Your body belongs to YOU, and it's time to send the strongest message possible.

I wouldn't be surprised if ALEC was behind this. They seem to be writing the GOP's legistation for them these days.

Most certainly.

ALEC has said they will work to introduce the Personhood bill in every state. I wouldn't be surprised if they are not behind all of the other hundreds of women's reproductive bills introduced across the country this past year.

Remember, Bob Marshall is the same person who called children with disabilities “God’s punishment to women who have had abortions.” What a pig. How he and the rest of the extreme GOP in Virginia and on the Hill are paid any attention whatsoever is beyond logical explanation. He, and those of his brain-dead ilk, really embody the Christian precepts of love, understanding and tolerance, don't they?
