East Prairie, Mo. Earthquake Felt In At Least 9 States

First Posted: 02/21/2012 9:39 am Updated: 02/21/2012 5:47 pm

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Just days after the 200th anniversary of a series of massive earthquakes in southeast Missouri, residents woke up Tuesday to a rumbling reminder that they live in one of the continent's most active seismic areas.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter of a magnitude 4.0 earthquake at 3:58 a.m. was located near the town of East Prairie, Mo., roughly midway between St. Louis and Memphis. Several people in five states — Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee — felt the quake, along with scattered people in four others, as far away as North Carolina and Georgia, according to responses to the U.S. Geological Survey website.

Only minor damage was reported, such as items falling from shelves, broken windows, minor cracks in walls and sidewalks, said Amy Vaughan, a geophysicist for the Geological Survey office in Golden, Colo. No injuries were reported.

East Prairie City Administrator Lonnie Thurmond said the quake lasted perhaps seven seconds.

"It seemed like everybody I've talked to, it woke 'em up," Thurmond said.

The earthquakes on Dec. 16, 1811, and Jan. 23 and Feb. 7, 1812, were among the strongest ever in the U.S., their magnitudes estimated to have ranged from 7.7 to 8.1. Shockwaves spread as far as New York and the force of the temblors reportedly rang church bells in Boston. The Mississippi River reversed flow for a time.

Those quakes, like the one on Tuesday, occurred in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, a 150-mile stretch between Memphis and St. Louis that crosses parts of Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee.

Most of the earthquakes that frequently hit the zone are so small that virtually no one feels them. Even a magnitude 4.0 quake is rare, occurring in the New Madrid zone on average about once a year, said Bob Herrmann, a Saint Louis University geophysicist.

"It's been a while since we had a good shaker in the New Madrid region," Herrmann said. "It is a reminder that earthquakes occur and we cannot ignore them."

Expert opinion varies on the likelihood of another big Midwestern quake along the New Madrid fault, though many communities in the region have taken precautions by retrofitting bridges and other structures.

Earthquake drills are also becoming more common. On Feb. 7, nearly 150,000 Missourians and hundreds of schools in the state participated in a drill known as the "Great Central U.S. ShakeOut."

Experts suggest that the likelihood of a magnitude 6 or greater quake occurring along the New Madrid fault within a half century is somewhere between 28 percent and 46 percent.

"Unfortunately, we cannot predict earthquakes," Herrmann said. "We can look at historical trends and say one should exercise some caution and prudence."

For SCIENCE!!!

Earthquakes are caused by the movement of the Earth (related to tectonic plate movement) that are pretty oblivious to the workings of humans.

There are no changes in the environment affecting it. And those who blame "fracking"? This is where it gets weird. The science behind that idea is pretty lacking, but let's go there. Larger geologic stresses actually cause the earthquake. If you believe that "fracking" triggers them, that means they are triggered prematurely. That means that the stress is relieved before it builds more which means A SMALLER EARTHQUAKE.

For earthquakes, "more smaller" is better than "fewer bigger"

So...to sum up...if you believe "fracking" triggers earthquakes, then we need to do more "fracking" to protect human life and property.

do you have a dollar amount deductible or a percentage amount deductible?
You should check on that and make sure it is a dollar amount.

I believe the alarmists have Schizophrenia !

Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder that makes it difficult to:

Tell the difference between real and unreal experiences.
[Alarmists imagine that there has been statistically significant warming since 1995. Skeptics know better.]

Think logically
[Since CO2 only causes 1 ° C per doubling it must be amplified by water vapor to be a problem. Since 1950 water vapor has actually gone down. Where is the problem ?]

Have normal emotional responses,

[Excessive fear of small benign temperature changes and willingness to believe any doom and gloom prediction is unnatural and unhealthy.]

I felt the earthquake in NYC a few months ago...it was wierd. The last time I felt a quake was in Iran over 40 years ago. People just had terror in their eyes, we realize how vulverable we really are. I just hope that Yellowstone stays dormant for the next few hundred years...or longer. Although it is within its time-frame to erupt...I actually pray each day that it remains quiet.

We had a minor earthquake in Maryland last year.. I was in the house thought thought it was getting ready to explode for a second and it scared the heck out of me not ever experiecing any thing like it before.. Family members in the car in driveway car was shaking some. Did not know what it was until the news came on Husband in yard and did not even notice it..

I can predict earthquakes sometimes. I predict that there will be earthquakes in almost every place that fracking is happening.

Fracking also killed the dinosaurs.

They act like we were all shaken to death! I live in Louisville and I have yet to find one person who felt the quake. About 3 years ago we did have one and it was a little scary. Heck we live on a huge falt line and I am sure the best is yet to come. I wish they wouldn't make a big dea out of something so small.

4.0??? REALLY?? When we get a 4.0 here in California, we're not sure if it was a quake--too little movement! We have to look at something hanging (plant, light, etc. to see if it's moving) to confirm that it was a quake. Now...a 5.5...that's STARTING to get somewhere! LOL

your comment reminds me of the movie LA Story when there was a small earthquake and the people in the restaurant hardly reacted, just went on talking on cell phones, eating, drinking, etc. Unfortunately the increase of fracking is causing earthquakes places that have never experienced them before and for these "newbies" probably any registration on the Richter scale, no matter how small, might be cause for alarm, if not near panic!

Don't knock what the New Madrid fault line is capable of doing. I take any earthquake strong enough to reverse the flow of one of the world's longest river very seriously.

Oh, and just in case you aren't up on your geology/geography, here's a rather pleasant reminder for ya. There's a rather very nasty fault line up in Oregon and Washington's coast, that when it starts to rock and roll, will cause one very serious tsunami to take off and cause major flooding. In BOTH directions.

And then there's all the geothermal action that's been occurring in southeastern Idaho's corner (and let's not forget Craters of the Moon Nat'l Park) with Wyoming and Montana. Yeah, ya guessed right - Yellowstone Park. Nice caldera there. That's ready to blow any time. All that volcanic activity millions of years ago.....I'd have to say it's due. But San Andreas being the ONLY thing going. ......Ummmm NO!

Yes...and let's not forget Mt. Rainier in Washington...smiling down on Seattle. They say THAT could go anytime also. Actually, I'm not panicked about all this, you see (I'm expecting your groans) I'm a Christian. I believe NOTHING will happen unless God allows it (yes, the good and bad). These bad/difficult things are to cause spiritual growth (and believe me, I've had opportunities for growth, if you know what I mean)... It also says that there will be an increase in earthquakes (even in places that normally do not), increase in floods, famine, and wars and rumors of wars in "the last days"...yep those things are happening. Do I like them? No, but my mindset is different. I don't worry about the future, because I know Who is allowing it. (and there are reasons for these things, but it is another post...) Happy Rockin' and Rollin' lol

Off the coast of Oregon (newport area) is a fault line that runs underneath huge methane hydrate deposits, really huge climate changing size. Old Indian legends have a story about a large village dying one time due to a gas cloud that released and drifted over the coast.

Not sure why, but quakes in the East and mid-America are often felt for hundreds of miles and do more damage for the size of the quake...here in CA it's rare for a quake to be felt for 100 miles and it takes a fairly big one to even get our attention.

Isuspect that with all the faults we have that things are just more broken up and so the quake impact is limited, whereas the East sits on massive hard rock plates that ring like a bell in a quake...but that's just a guess...
03:58 AM on 02/22/2012
or its cause CA is on the coast and maybe all the shaking goes into ocean or it could be wat other ppl said how ppl in CA r more used to it then say some1 in kentucky or ssomething

I've read that during the 1812 earthquake the Mississippi river at Memphis rose up in the middle and when it came down, like a tsunami, it washed many boats into the city. The quake also created Reelfoot lake in Tennessee and Crowley's Ridge in Arkansas. I used to live in Memphis and people up there take it very seriously.

it also "spit" out fully grown trees completely out the ground and also a phenomena called "sand bores" , something like sand fountains. One the most powerful quakes in the lower 48 since Europeans arrived.
Memphis, TN is built on drained soil like Mexico City and the right type of earth quake is said will have very similar effects (jello shacking) and will devastate the city.
I noticed while traveling through the area once that the Interstate overpasses have large chains ( looks like ships anchor chain) attached to the beam and to the column to prevent the beams from jumping out or off of the supporting columns. Hope it works for them
