GM Shoots Back At Newt Gingrich: You Can Put A Gun Rack In A Volt

The Huffington Post   Sharon Silke Carty First Posted: 02/21/2012 7:54 pm Updated: 02/22/2012 1:19 pm

General Motors shot back at Newt Gingrich Tuesday, openly mocking his stump speech allegation that the Chevy Volt is an "Obama car" because "you can't put a gun rack in a Volt."

"Actually, you can," wrote GM's head of communications, Selim Bingol, on the company's blog. "But the real question is, 'Why would you?'"

Gingrich made a stir last week during a speech in Georgia when he observed that the Volt isn't a great car for a gun rack. "We believe in the right to bear arms and we like to bear the arms in our trucks," he said, according to The Detroit News.

"That’s like saying, 'You can’t put training wheels on a Harley,'" Bingol said. "There are better places for gun racks and training wheels -- pickup trucks and little Schwinns, respectively. Seriously, when is the last time you saw a gun rack in ANY sedan?"

The Chevy Volt is GM's most advanced hybrid car, going 40 miles on battery power alone before the gas engine kicks in to continue providing power to the battery.

Obama announced in his State of the Union address in 2011 that he wanted to see 1 million plug-in hybrids on the roads by 2015. Republicans have taken Obama's push for hybrids and electric cars as evidence that the president is out of touch with real Americans, the ones tote their guns around on weekends.

John McDole, an Atlanta resident who works for Google, was inspired to shoot a YouTube video after hearing Gingrich's comments. McDole, a registered Republican, said he's been a fan of the Volt ever since GM announced it was going to make the car back in 2007.

"Most people are saying it's Obama's car, but it came up when Bush was president," McDole said. "People keep razzing me about this car … when I heard about New Gingrich saying, 'You can't put a gun rack in the back of a Volt' … I said, challenge accepted."

McDole used PVC pipe and hooks to set up a gun rack in the trunk of his Volt, which is the first new car he's ever purchased. He hung a Remington Model 11, the first American-made semi-automatic shotgun, from the back along with two other guns he's collected over the years.

Although he doesn't plan to bring his Volt out hunting -- he's not a hunter, he prefers to use his guns for target shooting -- he is in love with the car.

"It's like a frigging spaceship," he said. "I am totally razzed about it."

Newt is going out to say anything to be on TV at the same time he is planning for the future. Newt knows he won't be nominated the reason he is out there is because he wants to sell books. Newt is a political ganster and he knows how to manipulate the press the only money he is getting is from this guy that have billions and do not want to see Romney in the White House. President Obama is not an automovil mechanic and he has nothing to do if a car sale or do not sale that is not his role his role is guide this country to properity. GOP is happy if the gas raise they are happy if the automovil industry fail they will be happy if the alien come to this planet they are praying for something bad happen to defeat Obama. GOP is happy about what is going out in Iran they are waiting to see if Israel send their plane and attack Iran and if Obama do nothing they will have a lot of ammo to shoot. It is a shame that some peple are happy to see this government fail for the only reason they do not accept our President the man that was elected by the people!

That guy owns an expensive gun rack. lol That is all that Volt is good for. If he takes the Volt hunting he'll surely run out of a charge and be looking for an outlet in the woods to charge it. I agree with Newt, this is an Obama car. Too bad the Volt is such a lemon. It is really all about battery technology. Give researchers another 10-20 years and they will get there. But for now the Volt is too expensive and not practical. I'm not surprised that GM suspended production. No one except maybe this idiot in the video with a gun rack wants one.

So then why wouldn't he just drive it out using the volt's normal engine? You do realize that the car doesn't stop once the charge runs out, right?

The gas money I save driving my Volt exceeds my lease payment.

BTW, when the battery runs down the Volt switches to gas; however, because the Volt covers my commute I'm getting over 500 mpg.

Have you even driven a Volt?

Trying to one-up Newt, Mitt Romney is now claiming that you can't tie a dog to the top of a Volt.

We owe Opec Trillions in loans. We are oil dependent. And the candidate, NEWT, has this to say about a car that can potentially get us to the next phase away from fossill fuel.

Really!!!!

This is about as in tune as he is with women and birth control. totally off and out of date.

Volt gets 40 miles on a charge. I live 45 miles from NYC. Do the math.
02:55 PM on 02/23/2012
After Volt's electric range, it's got a gas engine. It becomes a conventional hybrid. It can still save you a lot of gas money, even if you do half your miles on gas.

Not paying $45,000 for a converted Corvair.
03:09 PM on 02/23/2012
So that means you will be using the range extender for five miles of your trip. The math says you will be getting about 380 miles per gallon and will spend about $28.00 in electricity.
Not to mention that it's really sporty and fun to drive.
What! Did you really think a $40,000 car would be slow and only go 40 miles...? I've taken mine on several 1000+ mile trips and love how it performs at 80+ mph.
Maybe you shouldn't comment about things you're clearly ignorant of.

Mr. Zero sense of humor,

I know all about the Volt and I will not be using it ever for anything. My best friend bought one and would return it if possible.

P.S. 80 MPH? Look out for speeding fix in the mail. LOL...80 KPH? Be careful.

You can clearly see an AR-style rifle and a shotgun mounted in a rack between the seats.

Gee, I don't know... maybe every time I go to work? We have a whole fleet of sedans with gun racks in them.

GM LOL. Ford rules. The Volt is a piece of junk.
12:12 AM on 02/23/2012
You should test drive a Volt.

If I said "Ford is a piece of junk", but it was obvious I didn't know the first thing about Ford cars, would I be credible in any way?

FWIW, Volt came in first place in Consumer Reports buyer satisfaction survey. This is a survey of people who actually know what the car is, and have used it. Volt beat every other car on the market in this survey.

So did a 1600 dollar Bosch dishwasher. They pulled it off the market after 9 months. bad design. The Volt is a total recall. Battery is terrible, doesn't last and the overall cost of the vehicle over time will cost you thousands. Not worth the nickel metal hydride it's made of. Back to fossil fuel.

Not a good idea. Gun nuts like you to see the gun in the window...so your eyes don't notice their small little, well, you know.
