California Man Found Dead In Storage Unit He Lived In

Man Dies Storage Unit

02/21/12 12:30 PM ET  AP

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Police in California say a 62-year-old man has been found dead inside a storage unit where he had been living.

Coroner's investigators believe the man had died from a medical condition three to five days before he was found, but an autopsy will be performed. They don't believe foul play was involved.

The man's name has not been released because relatives have not been notified.

Harp says it's illegal to live in a city storage unit, but it was likely all the man could afford.

Before the reality programs called attention to this particular subculture, I used to bid on the contents of storage units a couple of years ago. I would get a mailer totaling about 60 units and by auction day seventy-five percent would still be on. The seals were broken and every once in a while we would discover a bed, portable toilet and lantern. I can only suppose things have become worse since then.
This serves to remind me that many of us are only two paychecks away from financial catastrophe.

There is a man living in his van right on the street near my office. I finally realized the auto detail van is always there, day or night, and with the owner inside. People are homeless and desperate. I am thankful for a job and a bed tonight after reading this.
