Primary Election Produces No Savior For Republicans

Primary Election 2012

The Daily Beast:

The bombshell dropped in Saturday’s Playbook, the chattering-class email sent out every morning by the Politico’s Mike Allen. If Mitt Romney fails to win Michigan next Tuesday, a few high-powered Republicans have started saying, the party needs to go back to square one and recruit a new candidate. Yes, maybe it does. But what will that fix? Not much. What the party needs is not simply a new candidate. It needs someone with the courage to stand up and say that the GOP has gone completely off the deep end—and that the party could run an amalgam of Ronald Reagan and Mahatma Gandhi and he wouldn’t win as long as the party’s inflamed base keeps with its current attitudes. But it lacks such a person utterly. It’s a party made up of on the one hand unprincipled cowards, and on the other of people devoted to principles so extreme that they’d have serious trouble attracting more than about 42 percent of the vote.

The GOP is composed of old white bigots, by election dy there may not be 42% of the vote left.

The GOTP doesn't want a new candidate. They want a new reality. The current one doesn't suit the ideas they cling to like static.

I'm not worried about them winning the election.

I am worried about them stealing it.

Note they can't seem to get vote counts right in their own primary season.

a truly fantastic piece. if you have not read the whole article, it is absolutely worth clicking the link. in the interest of my country's future, i really do want to feel sorry for the GOP, but they are reaping the seeds of ignorance, bigotry, and heartlessness they've been planting for decades now. the Republican party has relied on stoking some of the ugliest human emotions to gain an advantage in the political arena, and now that very beast is taking the reins of control from the more sensible members of the party. it would be highly entertaining, were it not so disturbing and embarrassing a turn of events. THIS is the GOP "base". these are its people and their values, and because the party has encouraged this kind of sentiment through the employment of the 'Southern Strategy', the base feels validated and empowered. it is just surreal to turn on the news and stare in wonder at the rhetoric. these people are ANGRY, with the kind of passion that just inflames their already irrational worldview. and, regardless of how much they try to deny it, much of this explosion of hatred has been sparked by the presence of ONE black man at an address where they refuse to accept that anyone of color should ever be allowed to visit, much less take up residence.

"It’s not a new candidate the right needs. It’s a new electorate."

I love watching the Republican party self-destruct. They deserve it.

"They can’t see the obvious paradox—that their lust for the White House is making them submit to all the wishes of a fanatical base, which is exactly what will keep them from winning the White House."

I love watching the Republican party self-destruct. They deserve it.

"This GOP establishment is barely less loopy than the base. If the base is driving the party into a ditch, the establishment is riding shotgun holding a shovel. And there’s not one politician in sight who has the nerve to say anything about it."

I love watching the Republican party self-destruct. They deserve it.

" . . . let us please be clear on why there is no savior [for the Republican party]. Because there is no one who can satisfy the base of the GOP—a cohort so drunk on ideology and resentment that they cheer electrocutions and boo a soldier—and be elected president of the United States. Period."

---

I love watching the Republican party self-destruct. It serves them right.

Great article thanks. It's been a slow parade over the last thirty years spiraling ever downward. The way I see it,they've done it to themselves.Party and ideology come first & second, the country comes in a distant third if at all.

These are terrible, terrible candidates. The GOP is freakishly self-destructing and they have their base to thank for it. Mitt's tying himself into a pretzel trying to say what everyone wants to hear. Maybe the Republican elite will put someone new in during a brokered convention.

This is one of the best articles I have read on this topic. On target and brutally honest about the alternative options.

The GOP are gonna have to either 'love the one their with' or learn the lyrics to 'hit the road Mitt, dontcha come back no more, no more...' and I don't think he will go quietly or easily.

I'm betting that their desparation will only make them more vicious and give whole new meaning to clinging to their guns and religion......

Wowsa!

Isn't it ironic how the same ideological bloodlust that GOP/TP want to impose on Americans is tearing their own party apart?  Is it like a microcosm of what would happen to America if these people ever get their hands on our government again?

The 2012 elections will differentiate between the ideological and the pragmatic candidates, and so long as we have major problems to solve, we need pragmatists, not ideologues.

Vote Obama 2012.  Put Democrats back in strong majority of House in 2012.  Give Democrats a super-majority in the Senate in 2012, and change Senate rules to abolish the filibuster.

Maybe I have a short memory, but this election cycle by the GOP seems to be so much more openly angry than 2008. Not that I mind this party going off the rails, but it does make my spidey sense really tingle. Have any of us thought about that ang ry TEA Partier trying to deal with what we believe is going to happen, Obama/Biden 2012. The rhetoric could make it easier for some rad i cal of the right to use their "2nd amendment right" against Obama.

After all, by their thinking he is a M_usli_m N__at__zi socialist and they would be "saving" the US from the Left that stole the 2012 election.
