Japanese cartooning, or manga, isn't just Japanese anymore. Especially in Europe, where homages often rival Japanese creations in terms of weirdness and beauty, anime has become part of a working cartoonist's daily vocabulary. Portugese illustrator Rui Ricardo is proof of this cultural exchange -- his latest body of work repurposes the delicate end of the Manga spectrum to pay homage to countries around the world, so even Iceland seems like an apt setting for, say, "Yokohama Kaidashi Kiko" (one of Japan's prettier exports). We've compiled a selection of our favorites of Ricardo's work, including a pair of older posters depicting Tom Waits and Bruce Springsteen. You can check out the rest of Ricardo's travel collection at his site, and a more comprehensive portfolio at Folio.
