San Francisco's Wiggle Wars: Bike Activists Dispute Claims They Ride Recklessly

The Wiggle San Francisco

An opinion piece by the San Francisco Chronicle's C.W. Nevius has drawn the ire of many local bicycling advocates, who refute the claim that cyclists along the city's Wiggle path are notorious for biking dangerously.

Nevius spoke to Police Captain John Feeney, who recently amped up citations against cyclists riding the Wiggle, the bike path that connects the Lower and Upper Haights by avoiding the steep hills. According to Nevius, when Feeney began cracking down, "cyclists went ballistic." Feeney told Nevius that while he's not out to write tickets, speed and safety is certainly a concern along the route, and he's made an effort to reach out to area bike groups to further discuss the issue.

But bike advocates aren't convinced. "Captain Feeney hasn't 'made it a point' to reach out to us, so I'm not sure which bike groups he's talking to," Morgan Fitzgibbons, co-founder of The Wigg Party, a bike-friendly community organization dedicated to promoting sustainability along the Wiggle, told The Huffington Post.

Fitzgibbons added that he felt Nevius' portrayal of the situation mischaracterized the biking habits of the majority of Wiggle riders. "The reality is that at least 90 percent of the riders on the Wiggle are really considerate and respectful," he said. "Nevius once again shades the conversation to suggest that there are speed racers and texters and, oh yeah, a few people who are good riders. This is an example of the regular prejudice that is directed unchecked at the bicycling community."

According to Fitzgibbons, many of the folks who receive citations along the Wiggle are targeted unfairly. "I do know people who have gotten tickets and I witnessed strangers who have gotten tickets. None of them are of the 'speed racer' type--they were merely in the wrong place at the wrong time and got busted in this ludicrous sting operation," he said, adding that "the Wigg Party wholly welcomes tickets for riders who are actually riding recklessly."

A recent analysis by the Bay Citizen's Bike Accident Tracker found that speeding is the most common cause of bike-related collisions in which the cyclist is at fault. The same tool revealed two accident "hot spots" along the Wiggle, at the intersections of Masonic Avenue and Fell Street and Oak and Scott Streets.

Feeney told Nevius that the police will soon launch a program that targets drivers who are reckless with regards to Wiggle riders, too.

In the mean time, Nevius should continue to ride with caution -- at the end of the day, he remains one of the Wiggle's biggest fans.

Use more bikes and less cars in the city!

so we have more moving vehicles blowing stops signs and lights. this issue is obeying the traffic laws. 95% of cyclists do not. we should be advocating safer streets, not the right of one group to fore go the rules and endanger the rest of us

FYI - I rarely drive and am all for ticketing scofflaws in cars too

I am walker, cyclist, motorist....and there is sad pecking order with walkers and wheelchair riders getting the worst part of the deal.

Bikers have it rough on the streets and BUT its often the pedestrians and those in wheel chairs that have to jump out of the way of their reckless cycling in cross walks and on sidewalks. They treat those on the sidewalks like they are treated by motorists in the streets!

I am tempted every day to walk with large stick to jam into the spokes of the next cyclists that tries to mow me or others down on the sidewalk or in a cross walk.

If cyclists want respect they need to give it too. Then their case against cars would be taken far more seriously ...they would have the walkers on their side.

Far too many cyclists are ideologues. They are right about everything and they don't care if you don't believe it. Of course I am not describing everyone who rides a bike, just the ones who make formerly neutral people despise anyone on two wheels after an encounter with them.

When I drive, I hate pedestrians. When I'm a pedestrian, I hate drivers. But no matter how I travel, I always hate bicyclists.

Every year cyclists arte killed or injured by automobiles, trucks and buses. Most of these victims are working bike messengers. I cannot remember a time when any automobile occupant has been killed or injured by a bicycle. Most drivers consider these riders who are trying to earn a living as a nuisance
and give them little respect. less cars and more bicycles in crowded downtown areas makes more sense. But then logic, sense and understanding atre in short supply here.

They should just take out the stupid stop signs lining every single block. We can't have a bicycle friendly city with stop signs every 400 feet.

I'm guilty of violating bicycle rules too....but I also violate rules when driving a car so I shouldn't complain.

I don't see why a bicyclist should sit still at a red light if there is no cross traffic. That seems like a total waste of fuel while you idle.

In the right-hand photograph illustrating the story, at least one cyclist is crossing the street by riding in the crosswalk. This is a moving violation for which he should be ticketed.

They act like they own the streets! Incarcerate them!

I have encountered MANY bicyclists in the City riding too close to moving vehicles and recklessly weaving through cars outside of the bike lane.

They're not all reckless but the ones who are should get tickets.

Exactly. The same rights should also mean the same responsibilities and the same penalties.

I made this comment on the Nevius' column. "Thanks to Police Capt. John Feeney. The other SFPD Station Captains should follow his lead. The cocky arrogant anarchists on two wheels with delusions of superiority are completely out of control. The authorities have allowed this dangerous problem to fester much too long."

Exactly who or what is the Wiggle Party that claims the people ticketed were in the wrong place at the wrong time? How many dues paying members do they have? Who are their officers and board members? In San Francisco anyone can set-up a "community group" and claim to speak for an area or a special interest. Most of the time they have very small memberships if any at all.

For every 'cocky arrogant anarchists on two wheels' there are five or six on four wheels. I do both modes and see idiocy on both sides. You, Howard Epstein, apparently have an axe to grind against cyclists. Maybe it's presumptuous of me, but judging by your gray hair and corporate appearance, I'm guessing you haven't been on a bike since the 1960's.

The cyclists complain about the tickets, and then complain about unsafe conditions when one is killed.

On the one hand, most bicyclists in San Francisco do their best to be courteous. But, even they have a nasty habit of riding through stop signs as it's just plain easier than coming to a complete stop. Unfortunately, pitting a bike even against even a smaller car is a losing battle. Obeying traffic laws isn't just being polite. In a city with as much traffics as San Francisco, it's just plain common sense. I've read too many stories of cyclists who decided they didn't have to follow the same rules that drivers did and ended up on the losing end in an encounter with a semi. Yes, you may get a lot of protestors out there saying the car/truck was in the wrong. But, that really doesn't do a lot of good if you are laying in the morgue in pieces.

I see packs of cyclists running red lights EVERY SINGLE DAY in SF. No exaggeration.

They demand respect on the road, but they ignore all the rules.
