DECATUR, Ga. — Two young children who police say were kidnapped from the side of an Atlanta-area interstate early Wednesday are safe but authorities are looking for the man who took them and later dropped them off with friends, authorities say.

Three-year-old Jalen Mattison and his 1-year-old sister Amari Mattison were with their mother when their Volvo broke down on Interstate 20, east of Atlanta. The mother, whose name was not released, told investigators that a passer-by offered to help by driving the woman and her children in his Jeep Cherokee to a Shell gas station just off a nearby highway exit, DeKalb County police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said.

When a county officer pulled over to investigate the abandoned vehicle, the mother left her children at the station and walked back to her broken-down car, Parish said. By the time she returned to the gas station, her children were gone and an intensive search began.

The suspect very soon after took the children to the home of two women, who say they only know him by his nickname, which investigators declined to make public. The women, who were not named, said they thought they were babysitting. They say they didn't realize what was happening until they saw media reports about the abduction in the afternoon and then contacted police at a local courthouse and turned over the children,

The women were being questioned Wednesday afternoon but do not face charges.

"We do not believe that they knew the kids had been kidnapped," Parish said.

Amin Madhani, who manages the Shell station, said detectives reviewed a station surveillance tape that showed a man in a Jeep Cherokee arriving at 1:09 a.m. and parking near a pump for roughly 15 minutes before driving off. Madhani said the detectives who examined the tape saw no sign of the missing children. The mother told police that the man was black, roughly 6 feet tall and thin and was driving a green Cherokee.

The children and their mother were taken to the police station, but it was not clear whether they have been reunited.

Parish said DeKalb detectives contacted Georgia's Division of Family and Children Services as they learned more about the family. Parish would not explain why police contacted the child welfare agency, which investigates abused and neglected children and provides support services for troubled families.

1:09 in the morning, car breaks down, man helps her to a gas station, she walks back to her car to talk to police, leaving the kids with the "stranger" - why didn't he drive her back? Why "kidnap" the kids? Perhaps he had a warrant for his arrest, had drugs in the car, was drunk, did not have a valid drivers license, license plates were suspended or because he was black and didn't want abuse of the police. Most likely this guy didn't want to interact with the police for any number of reasons that may not even be criminal and left because of that, not to try and take the kids but didn't know what to do with them when she left them. So he drops them with women that only know his nick name...sounds more like a type of guy that doesn't want to deal with police. Yet now he will fact kidnapping charges because someone he originally helped created a situation that he did not know how to deal with. Lesson learned - it is no wonder people don't help out people anymore.

This "mother" leaves her children at a gas station with a stranger and walks back to the car and yet we wonder why Child Services is involved? Really?? If she's not a druggy or a drunk, she's mentally incompetent. She has no business with children in her care! This man just took a huge step towards child abduction and exploitation..... Even if they catch him he'll be running around again very soon and next time I bet he doesn't chicken out and leave them with a friend...

She left her kids at the gas station?? Come on!! Did he kidnap the kids or just take them to a safe place. How can you leave your baby at a gas station I just don’t get it? I hope they do not give her back the kids, it doesn’t sound like she has good reasoning skills.

" the mother left her children at the station and walked back to her broken-down car, Parish said. By the time she returned to the gas station, her children were gone..."

First of all, thank God the children were found...alive.

Secondly...WHY on earth would anyone leave their children with someone they just met on the side of the road?
02:23 AM on 02/23/2012
Ok.... this sounds more like a case where a Good Samaritan goofed big time for some reason and left the kids with the two women while he ran off to do something. And why the heck would the mom leave the kids alone with a stranger even if he had helped her out? If the car was in sight it might have been annoying but she should have took her kids with her, or waved the cop down. Hindsight is 20-20 though. I mean if the guy was a kidnapper would he really drop the kids off with people he barely knew? Could have been an idiot, but really seems like a case of misunderstandings.

What? Does anyone have anything else to add to this story-either Huffpo is up to their usual job, or something is missing.

So, her car broke down, and a stranger pulled up and drove her and her little kids to a gas station....and she walked back to the broke down car, leaving her kids at the gas station with a stranger???? This makes NO sense..Why would she leave her kids with a stranger and walk back to the car???Why didn't he drive her back? Why didn't she take her kid???? Story doesn't add up..
09:11 PM on 02/22/2012
She went to talk to a cop.
12:31 AM on 02/23/2012
That makes NO sense at all. Why didn't she take her kids and why didn't the man just drive her back. Something is fishy with this story. No wonder child and family services
are involved.

She wouldn't leave her kids at a gas station with a complete stranger and walk all the way back to her car to talk to a cop..

I think she left those kids with that man that she doesn't even know and that upset him so he took them to some female friends but he should have just called the police on the mother- she left them at the station the article says, who leaves babies at a gas station in the care of either no one, or some passerby? That's why she is being investigated I bet.

Where does Huff find these writers? They present only half of a story, everytime
07:31 PM on 02/22/2012
Absolutely. This site gets worse and worse with every passing day. What really drives me nuts is the misleading headlines. Not too long ago there was an article titled something like "Kim Kardashian speaks out about Kris" or some such, and the article said she refused to answer questions about her short term marriage. So, by Huff Post standards, her stating that she did not want to talk about it amounted to her speaking out about it. What a joke. I don't know why I even bother anymore. Of course, with the moderators here, this post will never see the light of your LED monitors.
