LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A convicted rapist accused of killing a 16-year-old girl he met online pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder Wednesday, several days after authorities found the girl's body in a blue, plastic barrel in western Arkansas.

A judge appointed a public defender to represent Lloyd Jones, 36, in the case of Angela Allen's death. The public defender's office said an attorney hasn't yet been assigned.

He was being held at the Sebastian County jail on $1 million bond.

Allen went missing Feb. 10 after telling a relative she was going for a walk. Her body was found Friday inside the barrel on land owned by Jones' brother near Lavaca, about 15 miles east of Fort Smith.

Authorities said Jones told investigators that he picked the teenager up Feb. 10 at a hospital parking lot in Van Buren and took her to the Arkansas River. Court documents allege he told investigators he decided not to take her to his home in nearby Lavaca because his girlfriends "might become upset with him."

According to the documents, Jones said he was making out with Allen, but then "violently pushed her into the water and left her there" after she told him her age.

Sheriff's deputies searching land owned by Jones' brother found a body and identified it as Allen using dental records. A preliminary autopsy showed she died of strangulation and that no fluid was found in her lungs.

Officers tracked down Jones after finding multiple text messages on the teen's cellphone from his number, a sheriff's investigator wrote in an affidavit. Authorities discovered that Jones was convicted of rape in 2001 and found him by tracing his cellphone.

Investigators also questioned one of his girlfriends, who said Jones would take his laptop to Starbucks to talk to people through social networking websites.

Jones told authorities he used one site, Mbuzzy.com, to communicate with Allen, who also had an account with that site, sheriff's investigator Anthony Sacco wrote. Court documents allege that Jones also told investigators that when he and Allen were at the river, he hit her in the chest and knocked her into the water.

"He thought that (Angela) might have been unable to swim, because her arms might have been injured when she was struck," Sacco wrote.

One of Jones' girlfriends told authorities that his clothes and shoes were covered in mud when he came home that night.

Authorities arrested him last week in connection with Allen's disappearance. While he was in jail, authorities said, Jones' father stopped by and asked him what was going on.

During the recorded visit, authorities allege that Jones asked, "Did they find her?" and said, "I panicked -- I did it."

Court records filed in 2001 show that a jury found Jones guilty of rape after a prosecutor said he held a box cutter to a woman's throat, duct-taped her mouth and sexually assaulted her. A judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison.

He was paroled in 2008 and discharged in 2010, according to a prison spokeswoman.

Seriously, even pleading not guilty seems like a waste of time for everyone in this case. Such a sad story. I hope her family can get through this since the rapist is going to make them endure the pain of a trial. Horrible

This is a very sad story and it is difficult to know what words of comfort are adequate given the overwhelming grief that this young girl’s parents must be struggling with right now. I remember being 16 and although my generation (baby boomers) did not grow up with the Internet and high-tech devices of today’s modern-day society, many of us had too much freedom and also lacked in good judgment in use of this so-called freedom. Modern technology can be a great tool if used with caution, and even then, we can never be cautious enough given how dangerous this world has become. It is when tragic events like this occur, that I have found certain passages from the book of Psalms to be of much comfort. One such passage is at Psalm 145:16 that reads, “You are opening your hand and satisfying the desire of every living thing.” This is prophetic, and until its fulfillment in the near future, such tragedies as this one will sadly continue to plague society at an alarming rate. My thoughts are with Angela and her family.

So.....In 2001 he held a box cutter to a woman's throat and raped her. Sentenced to 10 years, served 8. Why aren't guys like this kept in prison for life?????? They can't be rehabilitated and once released, they go back to committing the same type of crimes...or worse......and this was the worst!!

Just co-incidence...He looks so innocent.

Maybe some of these 'on line' romances are partly to blame. I have a 17 year old niece who is mentally disabled. Shes a great kid, but definately has issues. She falls in love with these guys on line, and you can't believe who shows up at my sister's front door. She is going to get herself hurt by attracting some of these wierdos, but you can't tell her that. Then again, you can't blame some of them, as she is the one giving out her address. I was there when some 50 year old perve showed up. Fortunately, so was my son and one of her brothers. I know he won't be back for a second date. Hope he had insurance, as he was in need of medical attention. Sadly, there will be a day when none of us are there.

If she is mentally disabled, other people are in just as much danger as she is, arn't they?
03:26 AM on 02/27/2012
Mentally disabled doesn't mean a person is violent - so no, they aren't necessarily in as much danger - That's a cruel thing to assume about someone with a mental disability - or perhaps a better word would be challenged - Maybe, she just isn't as quick as someone else - doesn't mean she's violent.

No, I don't know the politically correct terms for her condition, shes a very sweet non-violent girl, just very slow when it comes to life's realities. She wouldn't hurt a bug, but makes herself very vulnerable, especially when it comes to the internet.

I have got to see how this guy weasels his way out of this and out of the death penalty with all the evidence they have on him through his own statements to police.
It still amazes me the length people go to ruin their's and others lives.

In the event someone hasn't heard yet, there is a new phone application coming out that lets you, the parent, read all of the text messages your teen sends and receives. It is for the latest phones only, but it's a start in the right direction. First, we have to become involved parents though. Stay tuned in parents, we can still turn out some good kids!

As for this idiot, he needs life without parole. Poor kid.....rest in peace.

I've always thought this to be a great idea. Empty the prisons, and send them over there to fight for their country, instead of living off of our taxes.

Disagree, totally, I myself have always been against the death penalty, and also death is an easier way out than having to spend the entire rest of their life in a cell with nothing to think about but how brutal the remainder of their life is going to be, I just don't agree with any sort of parole, the sentence should be 100yrs flat. This also gives leeway to those who can prove if they are actually innocent (DNA) and prevent alot of innocent people from being wrongly executed. Murder is murder, killing a person who is actually innocent of a crime they are convicted of is the same thing!

I agree. Steal something, lose a hand. I bet our jail system would not be overcrowded!
