Brad Pitt's 'Make It Right' Charity To Turn Vacant 103-Year-Old School Into Housing Complex

First Posted: 02/22/2012 9:12 am Updated: 02/22/2012 11:20 am

Since Hurricane Katrina, Brad Pitt's charity has been focused on building sustainable homes in New Orleans. But, now the generous star is branching out to give some much-needed attention to his home state.

The Make It Right organization pledged $2.3 million to turn the closed-down 103-year-old Bancroft School in Kansas City, Mo., into a housing complex and community center. It'll come complete with apartments, a gym and a healthcare center, Fox4KC.com reports.

"The good news today is that we are now going to make it right," Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II told the news source.

Cleaver announced the building project Monday, which will cost $14 million. Its funding will be generated from federal tax credits, low income housing tax credits, and Pitt's organization.

The work is part of Kansas City's Green Impact Zone, which works to gather resources to make a major impact in communities, one big project at a time.

"This is just the start," Cleaver told Fox4KC.com, "but it is a beautiful start."

Although Pitt did not make it to the announcement of the project, he is expected to be there at its finish in the spring of 2013, Fox4KC.com reports.

There you go!! One magnificent couple.... there are others who can afford to care, but their message and vision gets shot down with other things. Brad and Angelina stay focus with what they want to do, regardless of media hype or negative reports. They both are awesome

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are amazing in the way they spend their money to improve the lives of so many people who are destitute by providing homes (Hurricane Katrina) and Angelina's totally human movie "In the Land of Milk and Honey, systematic rape in Bosnia, her trips to Darfur, or the flood of refugees in the Horn of Africa. In my opinion, they are my heroes. They feel humaness to their core, the unfortunate events of other human beings and do something about it. They should receive a Humanitarian Award. They have been my icons for a long time and continue to be. God bless you both and of course, your children.

Sometimes people wonder why Hollywood is more blue. It's because a lot of them don't become successful until after years of struggle. If at all. It's easy to understand how to give back when you once had to be on the receiving end yourself. LA is full of people who dream big and I'm very glad that those who make it make good on their personal vows to give back if they do. I know because I'm one of them, struggling. If I ever turn that around, you can bet my favorite things, kids, families, education, dogs and a few diseases, will get the benefit of my success.

It hits home for me, what he did here in our New Orleans after Katrina. Our southern neighbors were devastated by the flooding after the levees broke (not directly because of Katrina's damaging winds) and he really came out and helped in our time of need. He and Angelina also bought property in New Orleans and stay there from time to time - becoming one with those they were helping.

It's so nice to see such wonderful people using their celebrity status and well-earned money to genuinely help others and make the world a better place.

Well he was working as the El Pollo Loco chicken before he became famous :) If that doesn't make you humble, I don't know what would.

this man, and his woman, do so much for the world. the haters out there seem to be dazzled by the hollywood charms of people that give so very little and take so very much. the work brad does through his many foundations is never done with a reward in mind. i believe the reward is in the ability to give as he does. and what a great reward that is. although he denies a religious affiliation i do believe this man to be more chrisitan than all of the religious zealots running around out there. i am grateful for every minute and penny he gives to make this world a better place for us all.

Some people call themselves Christian and others really are. When was that last time you saw a Hollywood conservative ---or any wealthy one for that matter. do something like this? They are mroe likley to give money to universities, art and museums with the condition their name is seen from a mile away on the building.

Interesting that those who really are would never align themselves or can even identify with the institutions which claim to preach it? Coincidence?
