Brady Quinn Ripped Tim Tebow In GQ: Broncos Backup QB Now Says He's Sorry For Comments

DENVER -- Brady Quinn is apologizing to Tim Tebow for unflattering comments Quinn made about the Denver Broncos' starting quarterback in a GQ article.

The article on Tebowmania was written by Michael Silver and titled "The year of Magical Stinking: An Oral History of Tebow Time."

In it, Quinn was quoted as saying, "We've had a lot of, I guess, luck, to put it simply." He also said he felt the fans were the reason Tebow leapfrogged him on the depth chart when supplanting Kyle Orton as the starter after a 1-4 start.

"I felt like the fans had a lot to do with that," Quinn said in the article. "Just `cause they were chanting his name. There was a big calling for him. No, I don't have any billboards. That would have been nice."

Quinn also said in the article that the way Tebow expresses his faith doesn't "seem very humble to me." Both men are Christians.

Quinn took to Twitter after the article's release Tuesday, saying the comments attributed to him did not reflect his opinion of Tebow.

Tebow "deserves a lot of credit for our success and I'm happy for him and what he accomplished. Most importantly, he is a great teammate," Quinn wrote.

Quinn said he's reached out to Tebow directly "to clear this up," adding, "I apologize to anyone who feels I was trying to take anything away from our team's or Tim's success this season."

Quinn is an unrestricted free agent whom the Broncos are considering bringing back to Denver.

He was Orton's primary backup when the season started but when Orton struggled, the Broncos' brain trust wanted to see what they had in Tebow, a 2010 first-round draft pick who made more than $7 million last season, including a big bonus that was paid before the season.

Tebow won seven of his first eight starts and produced a series of stirring fourth-quarter comebacks that made up for his poor passing and messy mechanics.

With Tebow at quarterback, the Broncos reached the playoffs for the first time since 2005, and they won their first game, against Pittsburgh, when Tebow connected with Demaryius Thomas on an electrifying 80-yard touchdown pass on the first play of overtime.

Thomas chimed into the latest Tebow rift on Tuesday, tweeting, "I'm tired of ppl talking about my QB.. If u ask me there's no such thing as luck.. It's hard work and determination.. That's all..."

After the Broncos lost at New England in the divisional round, football chief John Elway declared Tebow the starter heading into training camp this summer but stopped short of saying the third-year pro had won the job for opening day next season.

The Broncos haven't ruled out bringing back Quinn, who didn't take a single snap in his two seasons in Denver after being acquired from Cleveland in the trade for Peyton Hillis in 2010.

Besides Tebow, the only other quarterback under contract for next season is Adam Weber, who spent last season on the Broncos' practice squad.

The Broncos will try to add a couple of quarterbacks through free agency and the draft.

Elway, a two-time Super Bowl winner and Hall of Famer who rejoined the franchise last year, has said Tebow must morph into more of a pocket passer to succeed long-term in the NFL.

Coach John Fox reintroduced the option offense to the league last year and Tebow piled up yards on the ground, but he completed less than half his passes in both the regular season and the playoffs.

Tebow has already spent time working on his throwing motion and mechanics with UCLA offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone in Los Angeles this month. Mazzone also helped him work on his fundamentals coming out of Florida, where he was a three-time All-America, a two-time national champion and a Heisman Trophy winner.

I don't know why he feels the need to apologize. He told the truth and he should be man enough to admit it.

The liberal media went after a "trash piece" on Tebow and Quinn was a naïve, willing accomplice. This has nothing to do with Tebow's ability as a QB (or Quinn’s for that matter), but rather Tebow’s outward profession of HIS faith which the media is deathly afraid of. Tebow has influenced more people and set a good example for more kids than all the media in the same amount of time. It’s a story the media “hates” to cover but they have to. This is about hearts and minds, that’s really the meat of the issue. Quinn showed how immature and “entitled” he thought he was by his comments. I have no doubt Quinn apologized after his more mature coaches and business people around him told him to, which was the right thing to do but Quinn should have been man enough to know that before he opened his mouth.

What is it with these folks who harbor odd conspiracy theories about the vast "liberal media" conspiracy?

Tebow is a media phenom, he's making them buckets of money and they are making him buckets of money. The idea that there are "liberal media" long knives out for this guy is just plain silly.

"liberal media" is a myth perpetrated by the right. It means any media other than Fox News, which in turn means any media without a policy for perpetually bending facts to suit the right.

"I felt like the fans had a lot to do with that," Quinn said in the article.

Regardless of what one thinks of Tebow, no one will ever mistake Quinn for a starting QB in the NFL.

If the fans want tebow, than that's dangerous for any qb and quinn should know better after all the browns fans had a lot to do with quinn getting his job. Unlike tebow, quinn failed in proving to the browns that he could be their savior and take the team to the playoffs. Any coach and team organization being pressured by the fans is not a good thing, that situation is worse for a rookie qb. Atleast the denver fans got what they needed the past season and there'll be more pressure for tebow next season to prove that he is a permanent qb. Brady has no reason to go the media and whine about his situation, he should be glad he's not in tebow's position to be criticized every day and be the target for the media.

The Bronco 4th quarter comebacks are a tradition because of the thin air in Denver. it better prepares them for the 4th quarter. Too bad Tebow took all the credit (no, it was his super powers granted by the genie above?). I'm sure the other Broncos would like to see him gone. Watch, Tebow will claim his genie called him to other things after he is cut next year. 3 years from now you will find him drunk in skid row.

Brady Quinn was the savior in 2008 as a rookie in Cleveland he was gone in 2009. However he makes good points about why Timmy was given the job. What til he plays many playoff contenders in September, we will find out how great he is.

Brady Quinn is spot on in his assessment of Teabow. What Brady doesn't tell you however, is that he himself is a mediocre NFL quarterback. But back to Teabow. Teabow is a terrific athlete , and a fierce competitor and but he is a horrible NFL quarterback.

Quinn should never trash a teammate! That's #1 in the Bro Code! That being said I'd be upset too if I were Quinn. Tebow didn't win that starting job, he got it because of pressure from the fans! People want to call Tebow a winner because he won 7 games in a row, but where are these same people, and what are they calling him now that he ended the season losing 5 straight, and 2 by a combined 53pts??

Tebow is not a great technical QB. However, if one looked up the stats for one of my all time favorites (Darryl Lamonica) one would notice a great similarity to Tebow. With the "mad bomber" as their QB Oakland won five division titles in six years, played in three AFL/AFC title games and went to one Super Bowl. In those six seasons the Raiders were 61-14-6. So, sure Tebow sucks as a technical QB, but if you can throw three tds while going 14 of 30 it doesn't really matter.

Darryle Lamonica? Seriously? From the 1960s? You do realize that the game of football has changed exponentially since then right?

Running QBs don't survive in the pros now. It takes a season for defensive coordinators to figure out ways to defend against them. In fact, it didn't even take the Patriots that long, and the Chiefs copied that in their 7-3 win at the end of the season.

Tebomania ... much ado about a second rate quarterback who likes to pray in public.

Tebow will never last unless he learns how to roll to his right. How did Pittsburgh leave Thomas uncovered to score the winning TD? A blown coverage while blitzing from the left because they knew he couldn't go right. Bottom line: if the Bears' Marion Barber knew when to take a knee, we'd never have heard of this guy...

Ever. Again.

Denver will do well to try to get a veteran pocket passer who can mentor this kid. If they can get Manning, and Manning can still play, then we may indeed never hear of this kid...

Ever. Again.

He has a slow delivery, he shortarms his crossing patterns, he can go deep if he's allowed to wind up, his footwork is atrocious, he almost ALWAYS laterals on his options (defenses: cover the option back, Tebow will pay for it in the long run) his hot reads are getting better but still only seem to work well when the defense is in the (misnamed) prevent.

Other bottom line, if he had an average kicker instead of a long-range sniper, we'd also have never heard of this kid...

Ever. Again.

I loved Brady Quinn for those comments and now have lost respect for him since he's appologized. Tebow is a joke of a QB who took over just when the Broncos hit an easier portion of their schedule. He did NOTHING to get that team into the playoffs and the Patriots showed him to be a joke of a QB. Quinn is right on the money saying Tebow got put in solely because of fan pressure and I can't wait for Tebow to get the boot from my Broncos.

You can't blame Quinn - this interview was the first time in a long time anybody's shown interest in what he thinks.

However, his comments were on target.

There is politics in sport also......The only difference is we do not get to screw it up and we can blame someone else for there decision. The kid did great and I hope he does great again. He is an example of perseverance and dedication. Good role model for all the kids around......So let's give him a chance and see what he can do..

Quinn was on a one-year contract that expired after the Bronco loss to the Patriots. Somehow, I do not believe these comments helped him to move to the top of the Bronco's list of veteran players to sign to a new contract.
