Christchurch Earthquake 2011: New Zealanders Hold Memorial For 185 Killed In Devastating Temblor

By NICK PERRY 02/21/12 09:05 PM ET AP

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — More than 10,000 New Zealanders stood in silence, some in tears, at a Christchurch park Wednesday while police officers and firefighters read out the names of all 185 people who died in a devastating earthquake one year ago.

The reading was followed by two minutes of silence at 12:51 p.m., the minute the magnitude-6.1 quake struck. It destroyed thousands of homes and much of downtown Christchurch, causing 30 billion dollars ($25 billion) in damage by the government's estimate.

The ceremony at North Hagley Park, which included speeches and songs, was part of a day of remembrances taking place across the country. Police spokesman Stephen Hill said the emergency services representatives who read the names had been involved in rescue efforts.

Earlier, a memorial for the families of those who died was held in Christchurch's Latimer Square. People across the city tossed flowers into the Avon River to remember those who died, while children at the park released 185 monarch butterflies.

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker told the crowd at the park that the city would never be the same again. He said people disagree about how the city should be rebuilt, but that one day it will again be a great place to live and work.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who had visited Christchurch a few months before the quake, sent a video message that was played to the crowd.

"Even those of us who were far away on that terrible day share in your grief. And we know it's been a struggle," she said. "But through that struggle we've seen the strength and perseverance of the people of Christchurch."

I used to live in ChCh on and off in the mid 80's. It is a wonderful place. My friends who live near Lancaster Park are waiting to find out when their house gets torn down. It was really sad to the Town Square and the Cathedral so damaged. My best to all of you. Kiwis are tough, I know you will pull through.

I was fortunate enough to visit the city of Christchurch early last month, and it was incredible that even with all the destruction, the feeling in the air was of survival and rebuilding. Though nearly the entire central business district is fenced off because of unstable buildings, an outdoor pavilion featuring shops built inside shipping containers has sprung up to keep business flowing into Christchurch. I was honored to spend a fair amount of money supporting these shops. I hope that others will choose to visit Christchurch while the rebuilding process is happening to support those who have weathered these horrible catastrophes.

I was at the service today and what struck me was the number of Asian names read when the names of those who were killed were read out. We have a large Asian population in New Zealand but the percentage of Asian names read out was a lot higher than the percentage of people of Asian origin in New Zealand. This is because of the number who attended the English School in the CTV building. It must have been very hard for their families back home to have seen it on television.

Hillary Clinton's message was very much appreciated.

I have never been to New Zealand although it is a dream of mine to go, not just for the natural beauty the country offers but because of the people. I have never met a bad kiwi, everyone I have met from New Zealand has had the kind of outlook on life that I truly appreciate and I think speaks very highly for their country, no matter the color of the persons skin they've all been people of great spirit and kindness and I only hope that continues. My heart goes out not just to those who lost loved ones that day but to the entire country of New Zealand.

There is much sadness in your words. But take courage. Though darkness surrounds many and their paths are as night. Become that night and seek no star to guide you. Step into the oblivion of the self and find the drear fate which takes hold of those who surrender to it with peace. Then sadness will no longer have power over you.
