Marie Colvin Dead: Sunday Times Reporter Called Into Anderson Cooper's CNN Show on Tuesday (VIDEO)

Marie Colvin

Respected American war reporter Marie Colvin, who was killed in Homs, Syria on Wednesday, called into Anderson Cooper's CNN show just one day before her death.

Colvin, who had reported from the front lines of war for the Sunday Times of London for the past two decades, was killed in a shelling attack. She was in her 50s. French photographer Rémi Ochlik was also killed in the attack. Ochlik won a World Press Photo award earlier this month.

Cooper interviewed Colvin about the conditions in Homs and a child who was killed in the city. "We've seen many children die in this conflict," Cooper said of the uprisings in Syria. "To be there, what was that like?"

"The baby's death was just heartbreaking possibly because it was so quiet," Colvin responded. "The doctor said there's nothing we can do...it was horrific. My heart just broke."

Colvin said there has been "constant shelling in the city...it's chaos here." While Colvin spoke to Cooper, "AC360" producers ran footage of the child who was killed. Colvin said she thought it was deeply important for audiences who are "very far away" to see the images so they can understand the reality of the situation in Homs. "That baby probably will move more people to think, 'what is going on and why is no one stoping this murder in Homs that is happening every day?'"

Cooper said the regime in Syria has claimed it is only targeting terrorists. "It's a complete and utter lie that they're only going after terrorists," Colvin responded.

On Wednesday, Cooper tweeted about Colvin and her death.

I have such deep respect for the reporters/media that are in Syria reporting on the horrible happenings in Homs, the utter destruction being done in the name of them (the Government) supposedly going after the "terrorist" when in reality, its children, families, civilian homes like yours or mine, now more reporters killed for just doing their jobs, dangerous jobs, but the world needs to know...

At first thought I ask "why do they, journalists, expose themselves like this. Thereafter, I think of how heroic it is to place themselves in the line of fire to offer a perspective of war and to encourage change.

Otherwise, we could all pretend that none of this affects us. The sobering thing is that we all are affected when regimes kill their people without cause. Thank you Ms Colvin and the rest of these journalists who work in dangerous environments so that we will never forget what is happening in the rest of the world.

I for one agree completely with you. Seeing that small boy die brings tears to my eyes and I look at my own little boy and am so thankful not to be stuck in Homs and yet I can't help but empathize with the pain they must be going through there. This heroic journalist died so people will know what is going on there and demand that it stop.

Maybe in her death she will bring enough attention to what is happening there that it might spark real outrage from the citizens of the world. I hate war and war machines... It seems like all to often the losers in wars are always the innocent people caught in the middle.

I'm as saddened by the death of those children and all the civilians there as I am for the reporters that died to bring us the truth. I hope their sacrifice wakes up the world to what is happening in Syria. It needs to stop.

We saw this same thing before the Iraq war. The NY Times was very Hawkish before the war but then became "anti-war" after the war started (after the mission was accomplished). Well here's a leftest named Dr. Michel Chossudovsky with an alternative view of the situation in Syria.

Very intense. I'm glad they showed the footage of the dying baby as it puts a face on this travesty. We need to send our troops over there...

So sad that we lose a brave journalist in a time when such things are SO rare. What an amazing legacy Colvin leaves behind. This was a life lived. We should all be so lucky.

Two brave people who died in service not to a government, but to the truth. Bless them, and may their families know peace.

I don't want to come off as cynical or callous but Soldiers are heroes, policemen are heroes, firemen are heroes, doctors and nurses are heroes, and occasionally teachers are heroes. They are the men and women who make the decision to take risks to better the world and do it for less pay than they deserve, and for no fame or glory. A policeman doesn't run into a dangerous situation hoping to be seen by a producer in New York who will offer him or her a lot of money to appear on camera daily. A fireman doesn't run into a burning building without a suit and buddies to him or her out. Doctors and nurses work together and Soldiers always have a buddy to protect them. The bottom line is Syria prohibited journalist in that country for this very reason.

No, probably they banned journalists because they didn't want the world to actually see what they were doing. Truth is often the enemy of dictatorships.

Why aren't we and all the other nations doing this? This is genocide and every day we sit back without action is one more day we are complicit. Is it because they don't have oil? If yes, the West should be ashamed and NATO deemed worthless..

"It's a complete and utter lie that they're only going after terrorists," Colvin responded.
Perhaps the regime targeted her for this statement. Syria is such a mess. Ironically, al Qaeda is siding with the rebels. The same cons that criticized Obama's actions in Libya are now trying to get him to intervene. Our intervention in Libya saved many from this same type of slaughter. But geographically, Syria is a much more difficult situation than was Libya. But at some point, this slaughter must end!

My wife and I saw this report last night on CNN and we both commented on the danger that woman was in. Imagine our shock when we learned this morning of her tragic death. While there are many people who would prefer these stories not be presented, reporters such as this brave woman who regularly risk their lives to bring these stories to light are truly soldiers in the fight in support of democracy.

Our condolences and best wishes to her family.

Well said. I completely agree. I hope if there is a silver lining it is that her death will spark millions to see her final report and understand what is actually going on there right now. Syria is murdering is families and children to stay in power. Her message to the world was the hard truth and she died a hero.
