Oscars 'Best Actress' Winners: 80 Years Of Leading Ladies' Gowns (PHOTOS)

Oscars Best Actress Winners

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/23/2012 12:40 pm Updated: 02/23/2012 2:24 pm

The 84th Annual Academy Awards will obviously be one of biggest fashion nights of the year.

But what we don't know is what the ladies who are nominated for Oscars' highest honor will wear.

Throughout the years the women who have won the title of Best Lead Actress have donned almost every color, every designer and every style of gown. From Audrey Hepburn's 1957 white Givenchy dress to Gwenyth Paltrow's 1999 pink Ralph Lauren gown, there's nearly no discernible pattern in the fashion choices made by our leading ladies -- and we love it.

And with nominees Michelle Williams, Glenn Close, Meryl Streep, Viola Davis and Rooney Mara all having unique style of their own, we cannot wait to see what they'll wear this Sunday.

Take a look back with us at the dresses of some of the women who have won the coveted title of Best Actress, as we wish this year's nominees good luck (and good style!).

People who think GaGa is edgy and avant guarde should take a look at Streisand's dress--front and back and remember that it was over 40 yrs ago. I miss Bette Davis though, she was deliciously badass looking.

I will never forget Halle Berry in her stunning dress when she won her Oscar! She looked stunning, but she is so beautiful with her short black hair and bone structure that she is one who would look good in anything she wears, but has enough decentcy to wear appropriate clothing given the event. I am happy for all these women and believe one should be able to represent their own style, clothing taste of choice on the red carpet. This is a critical moment in your careers and you ought to represent tastefully, with class, dignity and respect for the event and fans. Having all said, my dissatisfaction comes from some of the rappers and rockers as I feel there choice of words, stature, and dress isn't "appropriate" at this event. Recognition on this behalf is of your Art/Skills/Talents. So Stand Up, Show Respect, and Congratulate. You are blessed. I love to see my Black men in a suit and tie... thank you Jay-Z. So intelligent, professional, business minded, and dignified.

I invented a new Award statue. Instead of an Oscar it's called a "Tod". You don't win it for the movie only you have to be in any movie to be there. Instead, you win it for your outfit. The judges line the green carpet. Gushing and crying is permitted...Al-

Natural Beauty...something you are born with...or a bit of makeup that looks like you are wearing none. If you feel comfortable in your makeup, you will be content...and those who like you will like you as you are...natural or not....

as a matter of fact, i don't remember halle's dress. but i do remember that she won the first affirmative action oscar and hasn't made a decent movie since, which only makes her award more embarrassing in the first place.

I remember being embarrassed for Halle. There's a fine line, and I thought she jumped WAY over it with her LOOK AT ME moment. I didn't buy her Oscar performance.
Octavia, OTOH, came off as very humble and heartfelt. Classy!

Oh, it's all the work of the American fashion industry trying to influence women what to wear and what is not allowed. Women giggle and laugh and prance around in stores and then wear the latest striking dresses or short clothes and slit skirts to work and everywhere just to make men squirm and stare at them. It's all a game.

I loved Halle's dress in 2002, though I didn't remember the year, I remember the dress. But then while Halle could wear such a dress, I never could. It was my favorite dress of all time (on her)

sory but one shoulder dresses just look like you weren't smart enough to put your dress on correctly. And the skanky, see through (Gweneth?) necline to the belly button (Jso-lo) are just trash. Sad that they think they need to be total tramps to be noticed. Take a page from Reece Witherspoon, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, stunning every one of them and not a nipple in sight, thank God.
