Pope Marks Ash Wednesday, Beginning Of Lent

Pope Ash Wednesday

02/22/12 02:45 PM ET  AP

ROME — Pope Benedict XVI rode on a motorized cart in an Ash Wednesday procession, forsaking the traditional short walk between two Rome churches as the 84-year-old pontiff tries to conserve his energy.

The pope wore an ermine-trimmed crimson cape to protect him from the chilly, early evening air as he stood in the cart during the brief procession atop the Aventine Hill, between St. Anselmo Church and the Basilica of Santa Sabina. The white vehicle resembled a kind of mini popemobile he uses on trips and to get around the vast expanse of St. Peter's Square.

But Benedict walked briskly and unassisted into and out of the basilica, where he led a solemn service to mark the start of the Lenten season of penitence, including the placement of ashes on the forehead of faithful. He wore purple-colored vestments as he celebrated Mass in the ancient basilica.

Benedict has been using a different wheeled platform to navigate the long aisle of St. Peter's Basilica to reduce wear and tear.

In his homily, he noted that Ash Wednesday is a "day of penitence and fasting." Lent helps spiritually prepare Roman Catholics for Easter, which this year falls on April 8.

Benedict rubbed ashes on the foreheads of some faithful, as they approached him one by one, to symbolize mortality.

I have looked at one reply to my previous comment that Jesus has established one church instead of thousands. This reply is right about Jesus establishing one church but this church was meant to be means of helping all of us become like him following the example that he has set for us to follow. He has shown us the only way to salvation. The Roman church does not provide this, because of all of this baggage that it has accumulated during the medieval age, so this is not the true church. How can the Roman church answer for their crimes of the inquisition? Also how can they answer for this double talk today such as condemning abortion and yet promote the abortion industry by regarding contraception as some kind of sin? Almost all of these other churches are also missing it by more than a mile because of their baggage. I have felt very disappointed in seeing how some of these Jesus only churches lose sight of their first love by getting caught up in this political extremism which is very contrary to what Jesus has taught.

Whenever I see this side show and hear that the Pope is wearing " purple vestments" then changing to "bright red embroidered" vestments. I have to wonder how many wardrobe changes he has during these events? I just can't grasp why any person thinks this is at all the way Jesus would have liked this seen.

This pope would appear to be far more comfortable living in the depths of the 'Dark Ages'. I do not believe in 'evil', but if such a thing did exist he might be a poster boy for it.

When I was young, my parents would give me a small numbered yellow envelope containing a quarter, all designated for the church basket at every mass and holy day.
I would take the quarter, skip mass and head over to Shumenof's Diner for, get this-a cup of coffee and a huge glazed donut. Money well spent, not Lent.

Some pray at church, some at Shumenoff's. Only the communion is different...

Today I will take up my Cross and follow Jesus the Cross will be heavy as I will carry the Cross for Jesus!

Today I will spend my day and Prayer, fasting and I will suffer for Jesus as Jesus hung on the Cross and died for my Sins.

Today I will go to Church and Pray and I will look at the Cross and will cry when I think of Jesus hanging on the Cross for our sins.

Today I will eat once and feed a hungry person for Jesus this will be an act of suffering for me as I am hungry so I will fast all day!!

Today I will thank Jesus for blessing me and allowing me to be born and Baptized Catholic, I will Pray for my Brother and Sisters in Christ of other Relgions as we all love Jesus!!

Jesus it is me and I am so sorry my Sins put you on the Cross, Jesus I will suffer today for you as you suffer for me. Jesus I Love you so very much. Love Beach Surfer!!

Dressed in the finest silks, satin, fine gold embroidered into his Kingly Robes. If your word, or faith, has power, you need none such trifle, human materials.

If your words lack power, you must /appear/ powerful, and thus dress above all others in beauty.

I wonder what Jesus wore.

Gosh I wish I could afford an ermine trimmed cape to ward off the chilly air!

You probably can. I work with civil service clerks who wear mink coats to work in the wintertime -- but the difference is that the clerks are always buying new clothes, while the Pope not only wears the same things every day, he also wears his predecessors vestments.
