Rwanda Genocide Case: New Hampshire Jury Chosen For Beatrice Munyenyezi Trial
CONCORD, N.H. -- A federal jury of eight men and four women is set to begin hearing graphic testimony in the case of a New Hampshire woman charged with lying about her role in the 1994 Rwanda genocide.
Prosecutors say 41-year-old Beatrice Munyenyezi (moon-yehn-YEH-zee) lied on applications to enter the United States in 1995 to obtain citizenship in 2003. They say she ordered the rapes and murders of Tutsis (TOOT'-seez) during the genocide that killed up to 800,000 people. She denies any involvement.
The 12 jurors and four alternates were chosen from a pool of about 160 jurors questioned Wednesday. They will hear opening statements by both sides Thursday. The trial is expected to last four to six weeks. Most of the witnesses will travel from Rwanda and will testify through interpreters.
