Sonja Hinrichsen' 'Snow Circles' With Cedar Beauregard Turns Steamboat Into A Quilt (VIDEO)

Snow Circles

The Huffington Post   Mallika Rao First Posted: 02/22/2012 1:03 pm Updated: 02/22/2012 1:03 pm

Last month, landscape artist Sonja Hinrichsen and a team of 5 volunteers tracked a series of circles into the snow at Rabbit Ears pass in Steamboat, Colorado. The 3-hour long project might not have looked like much from the ground, but seen from above, it makes for dramatic viewing. Aerial photographs taken from local pilot Jack Dysart's Cessna reveal a snowscape that looks like an embroidered quilt, and the accompanying film by Steamboat-based filmmaker Cedar Beauregard, who mounted a camera on a remote-controlled helicopter, gets a view of the tiny people creating the elaborate pattern. Also part of the fun: that the tracks have probably disappeared by now. Check out the video below.

Everything in moderation with common sense.

That's amazing. How did they plan it out? Everything ran into each other perfectly. I knit and crochet and it really does look like a quilt pattern or a huge doily runner. What a creative imagination for the one who originally thought of it. The music was nicely fitted to the scene. I especially liked the way trees were centered in the circles. Lovely.

I read some of the comments and the only thing I can add is why? I gather we used up a day's worth of gas for the snowmobiles to make circles in the snow and then photograph them. Let me have a sewing machine with an embroidery attachment, some black thread and a piece of white fabric and I can create the same effect. And just to quibble, this looks like embroidery, not quilting. A quilt requires a repeating pattern to sew through the three layers.

Did you bother to read the article? Or watch the video? The circles were made by people walking, not on snowmobiles. And the article also says "...a snowscape that looks like an embroidered quilt.

Maybe you can create the same effect with a sewing machine, but not on so grand a magnitude. Oh, and a quilt does NOT require a repeating pattern.

1. >>The circles were made by people walking, not on snowmobiles.>but not on so grand a magnitude.

My response appears to have been truncated to the point of incomprehensibility. I expect people got to the site on snowmobiles, how else? As to creating the same effect, magnitude in a photograph is a matter of focus. A camera can make a 3" figurine look like a human being with proper staging. Finally, a quilt consists of 3 layers which need to be stitched together across the body of the quilt, not just the edges. The top layer by itself is not a quilt. (And yes, I know I'm quibbling. That's my mood right now.)

Negative people like you are a big part of the problem in this country. There is more then movies, tv and the internet for entertainment and the way things are going we all may be headed back to the simple joys of life. This was a beautiful story and a nice gift to those they have shared it with.

Since I neither watch television nor movies, you're certainly not talking to me. That is usually the problem with people like you who make life judgments from a single written paragraph. (How do you like being judged on the basis of 3 1/2 lines of comment?) If you like walking around making patterns of footprints in snow, be my quest but I totally fail to understand the raptures.

Beautiful. I want to make a quilt that looks like that.

How beautiful that was, very relaxing.

NEAT, it's pretty and i can just imagine how long it took those people to do those snow circles...NOW for the BIG question.........isn't it "obvious" how the CROP circles are formed? all this stupid stuff about aliens or some other so called otherworldly form misteriously visiting this planet and leaving behind the crop circles..is just plain ridiculous!!!! Someone with alot of talent has to be doing it,it doesn't take a "rocket scientist" long to figure that out.. c'mon people, get REAL!!!

Art comes in many forms. With the music muted this becomes a vision of serenity and quiet beauty. Bravo to the artist.

Breath=takingly beautiful! Looks just like an embroidered chain stitch. Use your imagination and picture colored thread......pastels for babies, bright colors.or just black on white. It is magnificent!!!

It's NOT a quilt. It looks a lot more like crap circles.

That shouldn't even be classified as a sense of humor...he wasn't funny ...period!

He was just trying to tinkle on everybody's good mood......and failed. He needs to get a life.

He needs to do "Amateur Night" at a comedy club and get booed off the stage...too bad they don't let you throw rotten tomatoes at "crappy" attempts at show business!
