Verizon 4G Outage: LTE Network Out For Many (UPDATE)

Verizon Wireless Network Outage

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/22/2012 11:30 am Updated: 02/22/2012 1:14 pm

UPDATE: A Verizon spokesperson emailed The Huffington Post just before 1 p.m. to say that this morning's 4G network issues have been resolved.
___

PREVIOUSLY: Despite having what its advertisements often tout is the most reliable network in America, Verizon's 4G network has once again suffered an outage, the company's fourth major outage in three months.

Aol sister site Engadget has user reports of 4G LTE outages in Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Phoenix, Pennsylvania and Ohio; tech sites Boy Genius Report and Phandroid have also received complaints of a Verizon network outage in Florida, Georgia, and Arizona, and the online Verizon forums have been lit up by users nationwide bemoaning their lack of 4G service.

The official Verizon News Twitter account acknowledged the outage and said in a tweet that the company is looking into it:

VZW is investigating customer issues in connecting to the 4GLTE data network. 3G data, voice and text services are operating reliably

A Verizon spokesperson was not immediately available to comment.

For Verizon, troubles with its next-generation 4G LTE network continue to mount. Though the company clearly sees the faster 4G network as key to its company's success -- see the mountains of television commercials, and the recent announcement that all future Verizon smartphones will be 4G capable -- Verizon had a disastrous December, with three nationwide outages during the month. This outage marks at least the fourth in three months; to Verizon's credit, service is generally back within hours.

The constant network failures have cost Verizon some reputation points, at least with tech critics, however. CNN Money, GigaOM, and users at DSLReports have all questioned whether Verizon is really the "most reliable network," given its well-publicized, often nationwide outages.

We'll update this story when Verizon's 4G service returns.

Still down in Phoenix, AZ 2:56PM. Why say it's resolved when clearly many users still do not have service? For some reason, I cannot even connect to WiFi... something seriously wrong here.

Been down mostly since last Weds in E NJ, and still this morning.

"Can you hear me now?" Not really. How about fixing your 4G network so it works reliably?

Horrible pricing. Forcing people to carry data plans for no particular reason other than they have a 'smart'phone. Oh, and for some really odd reason...texting, which is data, and is less data than opening a web site...isn't included.

The big three...are scheming scammers who give no value for the money. But then...people who flock to the lastest and greatest...who can't afford the full retail price of the things they covet...aren't doing anyone else any favors by continually enabling the providers to further exploit impulsive, uneducated consumers.

Do the math on the two-year commitment...and then go ahead throw something at a wall once you realize just how much that new phone is actually costing you.

Why isn't Verizon on record as saying they will be crediting user accounts for service they aren't delivering?

Because they're Verizon. As with anything else, outages are the customers' responsibility. Unless it becomes a big news story of course; then they might compensate customers.

Isn't this like a weekly, or monthly occurrence with Verizon? I used to think they were better than Sprint....now I'm not so sure.....

Verizon is the worst.

They will change you plan without telling you when you upgrade your phone or when you take advantage of any sale what so ever. They have to pay for that loss leader the iPhone somehow. Leave themon the shelf folks. Being a slave to Verizon is not worth it.

You are incorrect. Changing plans a) require a signature when the existing plan is not eligible on an upgraded piece of equipment, so you are by default notified of it since you have to sign for it, and b) customers are notified via email and snail mail (if they choose that option on their account) of any account changes. and no, I'm not a Verizon employee.

You must be a shareholder then. Anyone with any experience dealing with Verizon knows their stock price would crash if the government stepped in and forced them to deal honestly with customers.

I'm lucky in that I was grandfathered in to the unlimited data as I have not changed my plan since before they stopped offering it. If I had to pay for the data plans they have now though, I'd probably switch to another service provider, despite being a loyal customer for over a decade.
