'Brave' Trailer: Pixar's Heroine Princess Merida Shows Off Her Archery Skills

First Posted: 02/23/2012 8:24 am Updated: 02/23/2012 8:24 am

Last November, audiences were introduced to Pixar's first heroine, Princess Merida, in the trailer for "Brave." She was feisty, she was witty and she was, um, brave! In the newest clip from the film, fans get a quick and important lesson: When it comes to archery, don't test Merida's skills.

The two-minute video features a competition to win the hand of the Princess. Unfortunately for the participants, Merida would rather take her destiny in her own hands by showing the suitors a thing or two about shooting a bow and arrow. This leaves her mother, Queen Elinor, none too pleased.

"Brave" tells the story of Merida, who, after defying an age-old custom, hopes to undo a beastly curse. The film, starring Kelly Macdonald, Julie Walters, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson and Craig Ferguson, hits theaters on June 22.

Lame. The tom boy things has been done to death. Girl power should be about much more than using weapons. Instead of honoring and exploring the feminine aspect this film seems to tells us that girls should pursue more masculine interests because boys and things boys have traditionally done are better than girls and what girls have done. This film would just make me feel inadequate as a young girl. Bravery isn't always about wielding weapons and fighting. That's a traditionally MASCULINE view of what bravery is. If parents want girls to feel good about themselves don't make them feel that their interests aren't exciting enough. They should make a movie about a scottish witch that protects, heals, and feeds her family/village while the men are off fighting about ridiculous bs. Or how about a movie about a boy that doesn't want to fight but wants to be a witch, a teacher, a caretaker, a diplomat, a healer, a thinker, a writer, a scientist, a musician, a dancer, a craftsman. If it sounds boring it's because that's what we think of the feminine because our world and especially our entertainment is hyper masculine.

Faux News finds this offensive, saying that it indoctrinates kids to shoot arrows instead of guns.

Am i the only one who was completely unimpressed by that? looks like the same thing ive seen about a thousand times in other movies and the animation style looks like it was copied from how to train your dragon. I mean it doesn't look bad and i will probably see it.

And what are you going to do when a robber comes into your house and neither you or your husband has a gun?

Kelly MacDonald is delicious anyway, but the wild flame hair just can't be beat. That style went out in the 80's but I pray it returns in earnest.

Haha First, I'll address I'm a former Republican and can assure you their policies aren't anti-women.

Here's my comment: You're seriously going to make a political issue out of this movie! It's a Pixar movie aimed at kids, dude!

"Haha First, I'll address I'm a former Republican and can assure you their policies aren't anti-women."

As a "Tea Partier", clearly you have NOT been paying attention. What a surprise!

"Where's Mel Gibson?"
"Guys, the best women in the world are the ones that can shoot guns and arrows."

If this movie is aimed at children, they must have had YOU in mind... dude!

I soooooooooo want to see this movie !!! Strong women, even animated ones, are definitely hot !!

I have two daughters and would never let them be anything but their best. And never ever put their needs behind a man's. I have worked on a mental health crisis phone line. I have handled hundreds of domestic abuse calls. If any of my daughters were with a man who didn't let her control her have job skills, friends or family and controlled her for her own good, that man would be told to leave. By my daughters with me backing them up.

Because finding more ways to be considered hot by men is what this movie is supposed to be about.
