LA Weekend Calendar: Global Food Porn Day, Telescopes At The Observatory & Oscar Parties For The Rest Of Us (VIDEO)

STARSTRUCK: A Weekend Full Of Lights

FRIDAY
Global Food Porn Day
What: Snack attack! At 9am PST Friday, food lovers will unite for a communal bite. Art House Co-op is organizing the project, encouraging everyone to submit a photo of yourself with your meal. The Co-op is reaching out internationally and hoping the event will "inspire a feeling of community across geographic and cultural boundaries." Sign up ASAP.
When: Fri., Feb. 24, 9am PST, Free
Where: Everywhere

Anti-Canvas Art
What: The name, the White Canvas Project, is ironic because these guys will paint on just about anything but a canvas. A collaborative of artists are breaking up random objects -- " tables, antique doors, surfboards, film reels, oil drums, old-school arcade machines," staying up until wee hours of the morning to paint on them and exhibiting the result on Friday. It's a joint project by UK clothing company, Surpremebeing, and LA gallery, iam8bit. See the video below to get the flavor of these anti-canvas artists! Hat tip to amazing blogger, Bruce Chan, for this one.
When: Fri., Feb. 24, 7-11pm, Free
Where: iam8bit, 2147 W. Sunset Blvd., LA, CA 90026

SATURDAY
Volunteer to MEND
What: A lot of us have been affected by the recession and high unemployment, but some more than others. Meet Each Need With Dignity (MEND) is on the ground in the San Fernando Valley helping low-income families in every way possible. As iVolunteer explains, the organization needs year-round volunteers to visit families to assess their needs and make referrals. Volunteer orientation is this Saturday.
When: Sat., Feb. 25, 9am-1pm, Free, Contact Maria Salmeron at 818-896-0246 or volunteering@mendpoverty.org
Where: 10641 N. San Fernando Rd., Pacoima, CA

Party With The Stars
What: This Oscar weekend, party with the brightest stars of all. Once a month, the LA Astronomical Society and LA Sidewalk Astronomers put telescopes on the lawn of the Griffith Observatory for your star-viewing pleasure. Come this Saturday and check out the sun, moon, visible planets and whatever else is up there through top-notch telescopes, and ask real-life astronomers the questions that keep you up at night. This is a must-do for Angelenos.
When: Sat., Feb. 25, 2pm-9:45pm, Free
Where: Griffith Observatory, 2800 E Observatory Ave., LA, CA

Roller Derby Carnival
What: Any event with the Angel City Derby Girls is fun but this is a 1920's traveling carnival inside the Titmouse Inc. animation studios! It's a silent auction, and the troup says over 60 A-list artists will have pieces up for bid with lower than standard gallery prices. There will also be food trucks, FREE beer, carnival games and DJ's. All to help the girls get a permanent home for roller derby matches!
When: Sat., Feb. 25, 7-11 pm
Where: Titmouse Inc., 1121 Seward St., Hollywood, CA

SUNDAY
Pop-Up Beer Garden
What: LA's craft beer scene is burgeoning and, to help the process along, the LA leaders of the movement are putting their glasses together to create a pop-up beer garden. The owners of Tony's Darts Away, Verdugo Bar, 38 Degrees, Surly Goat, Blue Palms and Mohawk Bend will bring you dozens of unique beers to taste. The venue is the breathtaking, historic Belasco Theater; check out photos here.
When: Sun., Feb. 26, 12-5pm, $5/6 glass; packages ranging from $15-$38
Where: Belasco Theater, 1050 S. Hill St. LA, CA

Oscar Parties For Regular People
What: Thanks to our girl Marpop, everyone can feel special on Oscar Day. Forget about those elitist fancy Oscar parties going on around town Sunday. You’re not invited anyway. But who cares? Just because you haven’t made the A-list (yet) doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a little glitz and glam on Hollywood’s biggest night. Whether you want to toast the Oscars with a nominee-inspired cocktail or feel like stuffing your face while watching all the red carpet action, check out these fun Academy Awards celebrations for all the little people.
When: Sun., Feb. 26, 5pm PST
Where: See locations here.
