Razor Blade In Baby Clothes Injures West Virginia Girl (VIDEO)

Posted: 02/23/12 02:40 PM ET  |  Updated: 02/23/12 02:40 PM ET

A 10-month-old baby girl is recovering from minor injuries she sustained from a razor blade hidden in the foot of her sleeper.

Mother Brittany Morgan said she dressed Trinity in the item, which had been newly purchased from Walmart. But when she removed the sleeper to change her daughter's diaper, Trinity began to scream and a razor blade fell out, WVNS-TV reports.

The baby is recovering well at home, but Morgan says she's still concerned about the incident.

"I am so mad and hurt to have watched my daughter go through this pain over someone's mistake ... or worse," Morgan told Yahoo!

Morgan said Carter's, the company that made the sleeper, contacted the family and offered to pay for Trinity's medical expenses and said they would be looking into the incident.

But Morgan is not the first to report having found dangerous objects inside clothes sold at a Walmart store.

In December, customers at a Georgia Walmart found hypodermic needles hidden in clothes on separate occasions.

Two women were pricked by needles found in pajamas and a package of bras, and another woman told police she found needles in a pair of men's pajamas.

Of course, Walmart isn't the only store where customers have reported similar issues.

In 2007, a father found a razor blade tucked beneath the mattress cover of a sleeper he bought at a Wisconsin Target store.

Upset about the incident, he wrote Consumerist for help and later expressed he only wanted to make sure the manufacturer looked into the situation to prevent it from happening in the future.

I don't blame the companies, I'm just letting them know of my incident and trying to make sure that signs or something is done about this so it never happens again I have not sue or even went looking for money in anyway! Also My daughter had a potty accident and had the sleeper laying next to me brand new I'd just bought it! I never dreamed anything like that could have been in there! She's 10 months old now and slides her feet in to her own PJs also my doctor told me to not wash everything unless it was bought at a yard sale or something to build her immune system. I can promise you that I do blame myself for not check. I don't even know how something like this could have happened so please don't call me a neglectful mother I do the best I can. I can assure you my daughter is VERY taking care of and loved by my husband and me so much!!! I would lay down my life for her she is my everything, and I know nothing I say or do can take back what my daughter went throught but I can do everything in my power to try and get other parents that don't check to START!!! I really do want to help everyone out there to realize that things like this can happen, even if I get blamed in the processes. :( Thank you and God Bless. Trinity's mother.

Well i always wash all new clothing and things... common sense... but it is horrible that baby went through that. People suck!

I have read you should wash new clothes before you wear them as they can have chemicals on them.

the liberal media attacking walmart instead of the manufacturers of the items. only brief note that this has also happened at other stores. typical HP reporting

Grandma, maybe you have nothing better to do than pat down everything, wash it 3x's and then stick your hands down each leg and in the arms to make sure the outfit is "safe". I don't know what is so hard to believe about this story. I know I would not have felt the feet to see if there was a razor blade or something in there. The only thing I worry about in my kids footie pajamas is that one of my long hairs might get inside the pajamas and cut off circulation to my child's toes. I actually check inside their old pajamas for this, but I have NEVER checked the feet of new pajamas for my kids. I definitely will need to start doing this from now on. Maybe you should stop judging!

Never heard of washing cloths before you use them? If anyone got hurt it should have been mom. No lawsuit in this case!

She already said she will not be suing.

A good parent always washes clothes before dressing a child in them. In fact you should always wash any clothing from a store before anyone wears it. It's just good measure because you don't know who or what touched that item before you got it. Same goes for any dishes you buy even if they are wraped up or boxed, wash them to make sure there are no chemicals etc. left behind.

Years ago Girl Scout Cookies were messed with i.e. razer etc. and I was so paranoid and mad that there were some sick cookies out there (sorry for the pun) that I took a bite out of most of my mint cookies. To this day I am paranoid about any product that has a packaging defect and anytime you see a seal broken - bring it back. Too many nuts out there.

Sounds like this woman heard of all the walmart needles and decided to place a razor blade for a hefty lawsuit

You also did not watch the video or read the other comments. She is NOT suing. She just wants other parents to be aware of the problem so they will check garments too.

And what is with you blaming the parent for this. I'm surprised parents aren't more paranoid than they already are (or could be) because of people like you who accuse them of everything. Is it possible this mother could have done this awful thing to her baby - YES!
Is it probable that she did - no! No! NO! Please stop accusing parents anytime something bad happens to a child.

To bad she did not take her own advice and check cloths before putting it on her baby! Lesson learned the hard way by her little one.

I have seen a lot of hate directed at Wal-Mart in these and other posts, so it isn't hard to imagine the haters taking it a step further and putting items in clothing meant for tiny children.

That was not mistake. Someone put it there on purpose. I worked in retail, including Infantswear at a leading Department store for more than 20 years. When items like that come in, they are neating folded, (feet folded inside the garment), and sealed in plastic bags, and packed into large boxes. The Sales Associate will open the box, peel off the plastic bag, remove the tissue, take out any straight pins, and put the item on a hanger. Even if the employee uses a box cutter (razor knife) on the box, there is absolutely NO way the blade could accidently fall out and into the foot of the footie pjs, no way on Earth! Someone, (maybe even the Mother to get attention), deliberately put that blade in the foot of the pjs. Some sick, sick person who wanted to cause harm, or get public attention, put that in there. And I HOPE they tested the blade to make sure it wasn't covered in something really bad for the baby, which could make her sick.

I agree that a razor blade could not accidentally get in there. I agree that someone had to insert it into the sleeper. I DO NOT AGREE WITH ACCUSING THE MOTHER OF THIS HORRIBLE ACT - you have nothing to base this accusation on. I agree with testing the razor blade to make sure the baby didn't "catch" anything.

To those criticizing the mother in this story, do you forget about the Tylenol Murders? The reason why we now have tamper proof packaging on our OTC meds. Don't be so quick to judge someone you don't know based on your own cynical and twisted view of the world.

Thank you Katlyn! Finally, someone with a brain posts in the comments. I would be extremely upset if someone immediately accused me of harming my children. I think the whole point of this mother telling her story is so other parents will be aware of these types of things going on. She wants to make sure other babies will not be harmed.

It even says in the article she isn't seeking compensation from the incident. She's sharing her story for public awareness.

Why so people always assume the worst of Parents? I agree that there is a problem with sick people putting things in store items.

Thank you for not jumping on the bandwagon of people who assume that the mother did this for monetary gain. There seem to be few of us who are appalled at the idea of sicko's putting things in garments; instead, many blame the parents. Hopefully the accusers children do not ever have a major injury - the vast majority will think they (the parents) harmed their children.

I would never put a child in anything without first laundering it. There are just too many chemicals used in manufacturing and dyeing of the fabric.

Had this simple step been taken the razor blade, if it were really in the sleeper, would have been found before it could injure the child.
12:27 AM on 02/25/2012
I would never put myself in one, either. Can you imagine? Or sheets on my bed, etc. Gross, without the danger, still gross.
10:14 PM on 02/24/2012
People should not be so fast to judge this mom. I live 30 miles from the Ga walmart mentioned in this article, and the local news has reported more than 2 needles found at the Cartersville Walmart. Currently it is up to 12 that were found! In items by various manufactures.I don't know how they can not solve this case with all the cameras in walmart.
