ST. LOUIS (RNS) An Illinois bishop has confirmed that a Roman Catholic priest was fired because he "simply would not and could not pray the prayers of the Mass" under a new translation that went into effect last year.

In a rare letter of explanation about an internal personnel dispute, Bishop Edward Braxton of Belleville, Ill., publicly responded to the firing of the Rev. William Rowe, who has been pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Carmel, Ill., for 18 years.

The case, which has garnered international media attention, also led to a second priest in the Belleville diocese to resign a leadership post in protest.

Braxton said in the Feb. 14 letter that "several" parishioners of St. Mary's had brought audio and video evidence to the bishop "which showed the many changes and omissions Fr. Rowe makes in the Mass."

Rowe offered Braxton his resignation last year after a meeting during which the bishop barred Rowe from improvising prayers during Mass. Rowe said that when he prays the Roman Missal -- the book of prayers, chants and responses used during the Mass -- he tends "to change the words that are written in the book to match what I was talking about" in the homily.

According to Catholic liturgical practice, priests are duty bound to use the prayers laid out in the Missal. "These changes consist of far more than 'a few words,'" Braxton wrote.

In an interview two days after the letter was sent, Rowe called the letter "pure Bishop Braxton."

"He mentioned in the letter that we clash in our ecclesiology -- our image of the church," said Rowe, 72. "He's right. He seems to consider the church as the bishops', and my notion is that the church starts with the people."

After Braxton accepted Rowe's resignation, the Rev. Jim Buerster of St. Boniface Church in Germantown, Ill., resigned his position as head of the diocese's North Central Deanery.

There has never been an established penalty for improvising prayers, and bishops have been willing to look past an individual priest's extemporizing. But in December, the Vatican mandated that Catholics in every English-speaking country in the world adopt a new translation of the Missal.

Rowe said Braxton had warned him five years ago to stick to the words as written. Last June, the bishop sent a letter to the diocese's priests saying: "It will not be acceptable for any priest or any parish to refrain from using the new prayers due to their personal preference."

if, "Rowe offered Braxton his resignation last year after a meeting during which the bishop barred Rowe from improvising prayers during Mass." Then why is the headline that the priest was fired?

He received quite a blessing actually.

Now maybe he might start adapting Bibical doctrines.
Maybe now he should become a 7th Day Adventist !

Too funny. "I'll pray whatever the hell I want. This is a free country!" Narcissism is a wonderful thing and nobody does it better than Americans.

I was at a Catholic funeral today where the priest told all gays to stay in their seats during communion. I'm not a Catholic, but what sort of religion which claims it is peaceful and open to all does that sort of thing. We all looked at each other in amazement that in this day and age, something like that would pass. The family afterwards said they were so upset with the priest, they could not cry for their loss.

I suppose 2000 yr old institutions should change their ways to suit modern American moods. The Eucharist has always been reserved for those in communion with the church. To be fair, the priest could've said that all of those in invalid marriages should also not approach for communion. Anyways, noncatholics never understand this nor are they interested in understanding. It's easier to condemn, b/c you'll get lots of accolades from fellow liberals who love to hate the church.

BTW, this has nothing to do with liberal and conservative, this has to do with a religion which continues to reduce in size due to their archaic beleifs dictated by a bunch of old men.

Had the priest told all those who were using contraception to remain in their seats, only Sr Bernadette would have come forward.

Where do you begin; where do you end? Are we all not sinners? Is the priest without sin? In any event, he should have been more specific by citing those actively engaging in gay sex, not those with homosexual tendencies. The poor altar boy was probably wetting himself with mirth, or guilt.....

insensitive is a word that comes to mind. however, to address something so individual only serves to allow people to continue to criticize the institution as a whole.

Not a fan of the "New Mass" at all. But them is the rules and if your immediate boss says you have to do your job a certain way then thats what you have to do. You don't want to make it up as you go? Then go join an improv troup.

Maybe if the Catholic's starting to actually use the Bible and draw their talks based on what the Bible says and not what some man in an ugly white outfit who doesnt speak english tells them to say, then we wouldnt be having this discussion. I was born and raised Catholic and went every sunday, "holiday" and "holy" day but never understood anything that they were talking about. When I did ask a question, I never really got any answers. "You just have to believe" was one of the most spewed out phrases in my church. How can you "just believe" when the person that you are supposed to go to with these questions cant even give you any kind of an answer. Not once, did they take me into the bible to show me where they were getting their information. The Catholic religion has become its own "government" with a dictator. Sad what this world really is about any more.

I am sorry to hear about your experience with the Catholic Church. Please take time to read something like "Surprised by Truth" or "Catholic and Christian" to see how Biblical the Catholic Church really is. There are some really good resources at catholicanswers.com too.

Thank you for the information but I have been studying with the Jehovah's Witnesses for a year now. I think that I have finally found answers to all of the questions that I had growing up. I find it very hard to follow and believe in a religion where the men we are supposed to be looking up to have sex with young boys. The churchs that I have attended are always asking for money and the priests get paid for preaching. I have a conscious problem with those things.

As the Bishop must know, when a priest (or anyone) is performing his Duties he is not exercising his own free will. His actions are compelled by and emanate from the Divine so whatever the priest does can be neither right or wrong. The Bishop's Duty is to ordains priests, not to judge their actions, which would be blasphemous to the Holy Spirit.

Well would you think that when you ordain you pray and pray before you ordaine a person.. I just don't get this The holy spirit is from God . Do you agree?
If The Almighty is Holy wouldn't you think that He will perfer someone clean in the House of worship.

Let me add an Illistration..
Lets say i was going to cook a special dinner for my husband and I had to have all the ingredience for it to taste , smell, look good.... Would you do alot of prep for that dinner..
Like making sure that the vegetables are fresh and not old and mody, the skillet is clean the area is clean away from clutter or comtamination and they dinner is healthy for the body... Would you want that for the children of GOD..
Or is it easier to give excuses when they are in the news, .. ect...

huh. This is the first time I've ever heard of a spiritual leader changing or re-interpreting their 'Big Book o' Rules' to get a specific message to their followers.

The new mass seems a lot more like the Anglican prayer book.....

Just when I get used to Rite 23 they bring out Rite 24. Geesh. I look at God and shrug my shoulders. Sometimes we communicate better in silence......

I left the Catholic Church - when they started dancing down the aisles - and dropped the Latin Mass....

I wonder how many people - THIS New Mass - will drive away......

Lord - I pray - for another Pope Paul XXIII - or another John Paul II - THEY held the Church together - and since John Paul II - the Catholic Church has done nothing - but GO DOWNHILL............

Investigate the New Mass -- it is more Biblical than the first translation (when you left the Church).

The last is based on Gandhi's famous quote.

"He seems to consider the church as the bishops', and my notion is that the church starts with the people."

You got the wrong church.
