Republic Report:

As the anyone-but-Mitt Republican primary rolls on, former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum has taken the lead in the polls, calling himself the “best conservative choice” for president. His campaign website boasts that even after he left elected office in 2007, Santorum “vociferously opposed TARP” as well as “the various ‘stimulus‘ packages.” But Santorum’s positioning as the a pure conservative, driven by beliefs and values rather than self-serving greed, contrasts sharply with his record.

Since they are guilty of the same sins and both Catholic, maybe they can arrange for a play date and go to confession together on Saturday to be simultaneously forgiven? Then they will all clean to go forth and sin some more!

Is that what it was? I saw it too and couldn't figure out why he was wearing a barbed wire bracelet.. I have to say, I also had the thought that he has very feminine hands...Just sayin'

His feminine hands come from over physical self indulgence and the type of lube he uses. Oh wait, Catholics go blind when they do that. Never mind.

I understand this Santoro guy ( Santorum is a ' Latinized ' version of a very popular surname in Italy and Spain where it is spelled SANTORO ) is Roman Catholic.
He sounds Opus Dei to me .
Something or someone help us if one of them ever gets in.
I stopped talking to a dear friend of mine of over 30 years because he became Opus Dei.
You don't wanna deal with those guys, believe me.

It seems Santorum pays only the absolute minimum lip service to the subject of unemployment and jobs, speaking only when pressed, and then giving absolutely no specifics about his plans. It's as if he can't wait to get back to his comfort zone -- speaking about sex.

This may be fine and dandy for his campaign to get the GOP nomination (it seems to be working for him so far, if the polls are any indication), but it won't fly in the general election. There aren't enough sex-obsessed wingnuts in the country to give him the White House.

RIck loves to portray himself as this humble man of modest means.....by today's standards this guy is in the 1%. He's not fooling most voters. Just because you grew up poor as did Obama although the GOP would like us to forget that fact it doesn't mean you remain humble....Does Rick Perry ring a bell.

The GOP really wants Mitt to be the nominee.....not because they like him, but because all the candidates have a flawed "past", are wacko & clearly not qualified & cannot win in the general election.

IF the people don't vote correctly in the primaries, the GOP will find a way to make Mitt the nominee.

I disagree somewhat.

I think that most Republicans that pay attention to stuff outside of the conservative echo chamber have concluded that they are not going to beat Obama this time. This is why the big guns in the GOP like Bush and Daniels are staying out.

So given that the GOP primary is more of an exercise than a meaningful process to choose the best candidate, it has become a battleground where the right and left wings of the GOP are struggling for power. I.e., they're fighting over what type of candidate they will field in 2016 - a regular Republican or an extreme right Republican.

There are tens of millions of Americans who, although personally lacking the self-confidence, ambition and leadership qualities of authoritarian dominators like Gingrich or Sarah Palin, nevertheless empower the latter to achieve their goals while finding psychological fulfillment in subordination to a cause. Altemeyer describes these persons as authoritarian followers. They are socially rigid, highly conventional and strongly intolerant personalities, who, absent any self-directed goals, seek achievement and satisfaction by losing themselves in a movement greater than themselves. One finds them overrepresented in reactionary political movements, fundamentalist sects and leader cults like scientology. They are the people who, after months of news stories saying that no weapons of mass destruction had been found in Iraq, nevertheless believed the weapons were found.

"They are highly submissive to established authority, aggressive in the name of that authority and conventional to the point of insisting everyone should behave as their authorities decide. They are fearful and self-righteous and have a lot of hostility in them that they readily direct toward various out-groups. They are easily incited, easily led, rather un-inclined to think for themselves, largely impervious to facts and reason and rely instead on social support to maintain their beliefs. They bring strong loyalty to their in-groups, have thick-walled, highly compartmentalized minds, use a lot of double standards in their judgments, are surprisingly unprincipled at times and are often hypocrites."
