Robert Gully And Jerome Votaw Dead: Police Suspect Love Triangle Caused Sacramento Murder Suicide

By DON THOMPSON   02/23/12 05:54 AM ET  AP

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Police say a man caught up in a love triangle shot himself to death after killing the treasurer of a remote-controlled airplane club who was allegedly having an affair with his estranged wife.

Before turning the gun on himself, 73-year-old Robert Gully chased the woman from a parking lot into the lobby of a building where the club was meeting, firing several times but missing, Sacramento police Sgt. Andrew Pettit said Wednesday.

"I was shocked when I knew the suspect was in his 70s and the victim was in his 60s," Pettit said.

Police said Gully and 62-year-old Jerome Votaw of Sacramento were both romantically involved with the 49-year-old woman, whose name was not released.

The woman was married to Gully, and both also were members of the club, but they were separated. Pettit did not know if she was living with Votaw.

"They were definitely in a relationship," he said. "As far as living together, I can't confirm that."

A person who answered the telephone at Votaw's home said the woman who lived there wasn't taking any calls.

Gully got into an argument Tuesday with Votaw and the woman in the parking lot, drew a gun and shot Votaw multiple times before trying to shoot the woman, Pettit said. He kept firing as the woman ran to the lobby, with bullets shattering a large glass door.

"It appears that it wasn't random, it wasn't just something he came upon," Pettit said when asked if the shooting was spontaneous.

A security guard was in the lobby, and about a half-dozen airplane modelers club members were in a conference room and came into the lobby after the shooting took place.

Pettit credited the club's president with calming Gully down and walking him back outside the building.

"From what I understand, he did a fantastic job. He was in there taking a lead on this and directing people what to do in that situation," Pettit said.

Police, however, heard Gully shoot and kill himself as they arrived.

"It could have been a lot worse, especially with the people in there if he started shooting innocent bystanders," Pettit said. "We believe those two were his intended targets."

The club's website identifies the president as John Bigwood, who declined comment when reached by telephone.

Gully. a resident of West Sacramento, and Votaw were both part of the 200-member Sacramento Area Modelers club, which bills itself on its website as offering one of the premier flying sites on the West Coast. Its facility southeast of Sacramento features a pit area and runway, snack bar and clubhouse made from a converted semi-trailer.

Vice President J.R. Schiager and the club's secretary, Bob Calvert, said they did not want to discuss the attack.

"I think what's been reported is pretty accurate," Calvert said.

Members of the club fly large, radio-controlled model airplanes and meet monthly at the headquarters of the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District, a large, customer-owned electric company.

Members were seen Wednesday retrieving their model aircraft from the building.

The utility is looking into its policy on permitting private groups to use its facilities, Utility district spokeswoman Dace Udris said. No employees were involved in the incident, she said.

Older people have emotions too. But, judging by this woman's age, I would say that she was playing them both.
02:44 PM on 02/23/2012
49 mixing with a 73, and then a 62 ? What a three-some. This woman is too much. She should have just relocated faraway if she got tired (or the 73 yo got 'tired') of her husband to avoid something like this to happen.
03:44 PM on 02/23/2012
Really? Are you freaking kidding me? Find a way to make this the woman's fault. She and her husband were not together and she was seeing someone else. This is not reason for the estranged husband to go around shooting people. This is not her fault that this guy lost control. We all have to be responsible for ourselves someonewhere in our lives. If he was 73, it was about time for him to be responsible for his actions. It is sad, but the woman was not to blame. Please.

It IS a reason, though not an excuse.
07:02 PM on 02/23/2012
You undivinely missed the point. I comments were meant to suggest that for her own safety and protection.... and of course, now that you have brought up 'fault,' she should have known better to be seeing someone else right in the vicinity. Please.

Excuse me? Let me get this straight, if a woman and a man break up and the woman doesn't move away, she can expect the man to come and shoot at her? Are you serious?
07:05 PM on 02/23/2012
You are definitely NOT excused.... I merely suggested that as a way for her to protect herself and ensure her own personal safety, given the mentality of men who endure this type of situation, especially when the woman now goes bedding with another man right in the neighborhood. Well, as you can see, it takes no magician to foretell what might happen, and it did happen.

Crazy Stalkers are everywhere. It is horrid that the legal system cannot devise a system to stop them before the one being stalked gets killed. I say you have to try to be able to protect yourself. If they come at you, shoot them. It is either you or them. I had a guy run me off the road in my car, hold me and not let me leave when getting some of my things. Everywhere I went, he would be there, the mall, out to dinner, the grocery store. I had to call the police one night when I returned home from a night out. There was an imprint of my body in my wall where he picked me up and pushed me into it, my face was black and blue where he slammed it into the floor. The cops were and I could hear them telling him I wasn't worth it and he should move on. All was my fault he broke the door down to my house and beat me after I broke up with him. But the sympathy from the cops was totally with the guy. Because I broke up with him and he still wanted me, I was a worthless tramp. This was a long time ago, but I can promise you, this would never happen to me now. They would be carrying this guy out in a body bag. You should be very careful and take some self-protection classes, arm yourself.

I doubt they were "blaming you " as much as trying to appeal to the guy's self interest to end a problem, It isn't "worth it " whether the perp is a man or a woman to try to "force somenoe " to come back and always ends badly for everyone (even the police)

he didn't really want to kill her in the first place. He was a complete idiot.
03:59 PM on 02/23/2012
You don't know the real story. She could have had a good reason to leave him. Maybe he cheated on her. You know it's OK for a guy to cheat. A woman is just supposed to take it and move on. But she left him to move on with her life for whatever reason. He had no right to shoot anyone. He was out of control. It is sad but he was in the wrong here. He attempted to commit premeditated murder her. It is not like a crime of passion when he walked in on them at his home unexpectedly. There is always a group that sympathizes with the poor guy. Please.

Florida Supreme Court case raises fundamental questions about the nature of fatherhood and legal responsibilities.
February 9, 2007 — Sixteen months after his divorce, Richard Parker made a devastating discovery in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. A DNA test revealed that his 3-year-old son had been fathered by someone else.

Mr. Parker immediately filed a lawsuit claiming fraud by his apparently unfaithful ex-wife. He took his case all the way to the Florida Supreme Court.

Last week, the Florida justices ruled 7-0 against him. They said that Parker must continue to pay $1,200 a month in child support because he had missed the one-year post-divorce deadline for filing his lawsuit. His court-ordered payments would total more than $200,000 over 15 years to support another man's child.

"We find that the balance of policy considerations favors protecting the best interests of the child over protecting the interests of one parent defrauded by the other parent in the midst of a divorce proceeding," writes Justice Kenneth Bell for the court.

"We recognize that the former husband in this case may feel victimized," he writes. He then quotes a scholar to explain the ruling: "While some individuals are innocent victims of deceptive partners, adults are aware of the high incidence of infidelity and only they, not the children, are able to act to ensure that the biological ties they may deem essential are present."

The high court is saying it's partly Parker's fault for trusting his wife.

Experts agree that there were warning signs that foreshadowed this mindless tragedy. The most obvious warning sign was the fact that a man in his 60's and another in his 70's were is a remote contol airplane club. Time to grow up, fellas.

You obviously know NOTHING about this hobby. No different than fishing, golf, bowling ,etc.

Just because the box says "ages 8 and up", you don't have to take it literally. The remote controlled gadgets are found in the department store toy section, just down the aisle from the pooping babydolls. Calling it a hobby doesn't mean you aren't playing with toys. You claim its no different than bowling, fishing or golf. However, it is much closer to playing Dungeons and Dragons or being in the Harry Potter fan club.
04:01 PM on 02/23/2012
I don't think the hobby group has anything to do with premeditated murder. What an absolutely ignorant statement.

What does that have to do with anything. I love it when the morons can make anything about their political agenda. As usual, poor taste and totally out of context.

Hmmmm, poor taste maybe but the comment was in context. Also, if you want people to hear your message, I suggest you refrain from name calling. Personal. attacks imply ignorance.
I should also say that I am a firm believer in the right to bear arms :)) I just dislike a poorly framed argument :))
