The Most Popular Sodas In The World [PHOTOS]

First Posted: 02/23/2012 4:50 pm   Updated: 02/23/2012 4:50 pm

The battle to be the world's favorite beverage is bubbling up.

To cope in part with a loss in market share, Pepsi is cutting 8,700 jobs worldwide and spending more than $500 million more on ads, the soda giant announced earlier this month. In addition, Pepsi will roll out "Pepsi Next" -- the company's first major product launch in years (It's a compromise calorie-wise between its regular and diet versions and).

But officials at Pepsi's arch-rival don't appear to be nervous. Gary Fayard, Coke's CEO, said his company doesn't plan on boosting its advertising spending as a share of its revenue in response to Pepsi's announcement, according to Reuters.

Still, neither soda giant is in a great place right now. Higher commodity costs and a boost in consumers turning away from sugary drinks mean that companies' shares may likely suffer in 2012, according to MSN Money.

People pay a lot of money for sugary (or sugar-substituty) and caffeiny bubbles and water. Plain water is better tasting and better for you.

Sounds like things are getting worse instead of improving.

Perhaps a Global Recession cutting jobs and increasing advertising promotion:

I hope these companies go under and I hope they lose every job. It's SUGAR WATER. It's crap. Drink something like waters or fair trade juice....or fair trade coffee. Soda or POP has caused more cases of obesity, diabetes, and don't even get me started on the use of plastics and the lack of recycling programs etc etc. Soda should be banned in schools, and the companies should be held more responsible for the damage they do.

Yes. But we are a species of noxious great apes with a number of terrible bad habits, and it's not getting any better as we learn to use technology.

LOL.. is Soda an Eastern thing?

In Texas we were raised that everything is Coke to us...Then once you get North to about Kansas it turns into Soda.. Then once you get to South Dakota it turns to Pop.

How about a "battle" to make WATER the number 1 drink?

The ingredients of soda are destroying the health of Americans, and are imho the leading cause of obesity and diabetes in this country.

Take two glasses. Into one glass pour your favorite soft drink. Into the other glass pour a good whiskey. Pour the soda on the floor. Drink the whiskey. There you go.

Their is an old recipe for Galah (a very common parrot) - place it in a pot with a brick & boil til the brick is soft, then eat the brick

I've got some recipes in that spirit, in 'The Hashish Cookbook,' by Panama Rose (1966, $1.65), from City Lights Bookstore. Including, Black Sabbath Salve, Nebuchadnezzar's Dream and Bhang Sherbet.

I drank Dr. Pepper years ago before I wised up.

I've got the bad teeth to prove it.

I almost never drink a pop, but if I do it's Caffeine Free Diet Coke.
