Africanized Bees Kill Mother Of 8 In Guyana

First Posted: 02/24/2012 11:49 am Updated: 02/24/2012 2:35 pm

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — A mother of eight has died in the South American country of Guyana after she was attacked by a swarm of Africanized bees.

Police said Friday that 47-year-old Munia Sanchara was attacked while picking mangoes from a tree at her house in the coastal community of Cane Grove. Police said she was declared dead after arriving at a hospital in the capital of Georgetown.

Guyana has reported several fatal bee attacks in recent years.

Africanized bees from South Africa were introduced to Brazil in the late 1950s for a crossbreeding program and some accidentally were let loose.

You can tell the Africanized bee from the European type very easily. The Africanized are smaller in size. They also fly in a zig-zag style rather than in a straight line. Also, when you are around bees, don't wear bright clothing or wear perfume, etc. Move slowly and keep your mouth SHUT. They are attracted to carbon monoxide of our breath and also if we are afraid we put out a subtle scent of our own that they pick up on.
If you have to deal with bees, do it in the evening or night. They won't fly or attack at night.

The big, BIG difference between european and african bees is this; if you disturb a hive of European bees, a committee will come out to sting you.

Africanized bees deploy the entire hive to defend themselves. That's why they're so dangerous. Their venom isn't stronger, but they will all come out for a piece of you.

Another AP Africanized Bee story. I think they must have a desk devoted to this stuff. I've had numerous hives with africanized honeybee strains. The key was to work with them. One interesting feature, and there are many, is that they are a bit slow to get going in the morning. They will sit a while at the front of the hive and warm up in the sun before taking off to work. One beekeeper acquaintance called them "Porch Monkeys" which was quite tasteless. On the other hand, he could have a profitable career as the AP bee writer, because that's apparently the kind of in-depth analysis they pay for.

A few years ago there was a nest of killer bees in the yard of my neighbor. They attacked my little dog to which it died a few hours later. The pest control wanted to charge me $80.00 to try and get rid of them. I tackled the issue on my own and won. All it took was a bowl of sweet juice filled at three quarters with oil lining the sides and eventually they all drowned including the queen bee.

In Ghana, are these not African bees, not Africanized bees - the hybrid from Brazil ?
04:33 PM on 02/27/2012
Perhaps in Ghana they are known as African bees, but in Georgetown, Guyana, they are Africanized, because Guyana is in our hemisphere!

Thank you. For today I receive a zero for comprehension. I skimmed the article and read Ghana, not Guyana. I feel like I am becoming dyslexic - or some such thing - in my dotage.

They are from Africa. Some of their behaviors, like aggressive focus on stinging the eyes and ears, were developed to deal with some big disturbers. Farmers can put empty boxes by trees they want to protect just to keep elephants away. And it works because the elephant so hates even the thought of having to deal with such bees!

I am appalled... APPALLED...at the INSENSITIVITY of many of the comments here! SHAME!

They are the The Help. They are the workers. They work their entire lives to create the things you never could or would make. They sacrifice tirelessly, working long hours from sunrise to sundown.

And now hundreds, maybe thousands are dead. And all to protect the one they love, to defend their sweet home and their life's legacy from THIEVES!

Please. Boycott Honey...and God Save The Queen!

Somebody needs to let a swarm loose at a Tea Party rally - sting some sense into our very own radicalized right. :)
05:08 PM on 02/27/2012
That is so funny. Just make sure that you are not in the surroundings when the swarm is loose.

Swarming bees do not sting. The only way the Tea Party would be disrupted is if the hive is nearby the meeting location. They are full of honey and this is like an outing with a new young vigorous queen to find a new hive location. Once they settle down somewhere and get organized and the guard bees are on duty, then you will see this defensive behavior.
