Los Angeles High School Shooting: 2 Shot, 1 Suspect Sought (VIDEO, UPDATE)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/24/2012 7:56 pm Updated: 02/24/2012 8:37 pm

Two people have been shot near Los Angeles High School on Rimpau and Olympic Boulevards, reports KPCC.

There are conflicting reports about the ages of the victims. KPCC and ABC Los Angeles say that a 17-year-old student and a 20-year-old man have been shot, while CBS Los Angeles lists 17- and 15-year-old victims.

The Los Angeles Police Department was not able to confirm the victim's names or ages to the Huffington Post, but did acknowledge that the high school was put on lockdown while police searched for two suspects.

The suspects are described by ABC Los Angeles:

a Hispanic male with short spiky black hair, standing 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 130 pounds, wearing a gray shirt and blue jeans; and a Hispanic male with a shaved head, standing 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing 120 pounds, wearing a white shirt and blue jeans.

The shootings were first reported on Twitter by Fox Sports West reporter Patrick O'Neal, who tweeted at 3:43 p.m., "Something very intense happening at Los Angeles High School on Olympic. Cops everywhere. Helicopters. #Traffic"

Actor Patton Oswalt also tweeted about the commotion before other news outlets, saying, "I'm writing in a house near Olympic & Muirfield. Heard 5 gunshots & a scream, and now police & helicopters everywhere. Anyone?"

Twenty minutes later, he tweeted, "Yikes! High school shooting. All up to date now, and also kinda sick and sad. Please don't kill each other, Twitter."

UPDATE: The police are searching for just one suspect, not two, clarified LAPD spokesperson Lt. Andy Neiman. The original police report was mistaken, said Neiman, and the suspect is still outstanding.

While Neiman wasn't able to confirm the victims' names, ages or relationship to the school, he did say that their shooting injuries were not life-threatening. One was shot in the leg and the other in the lower back while they were walking on the sidewalk, and they were transported to local hospitals.

The police believe that the incident may be gang-related.

Story is developing...

No discipline No strict schedules like the old days. After a whole week off for teachers w/pay and schools closed to learning the kids don't" WANNA GO BACK" so some of them whip out their guns in OHIO and L.A. and take it out on society. Thats the sicko society we live in. Also while those clowns in Hollywood put on the Academy Awards showing all kinds of violence in movie scenes they drum up anger in the L.A and OHIO vicinity and nationwide..

I met a young lady the otha day. She told me she was eighteen; but she looked younger than that to me. She and I were walkin' up to Crenshaw. She said she was on her way to Vegas to enter rehab and hopefully get custody of her three month old infant. She'd been with the baby's Dad for three years and he was a gang banger. I felt so badly since I didn't have any money to give her. Her Dad is a cackhead/alcoholic. She's tryin' to kick meth. Only eighteen. Her whole life is ahead of her. But only GOD knows what will become of her. What happened to our young folk? So very very sad. Life.

I don't understand how these kids don't realize that once they shoot someone, they only end their own lives.

I taught adult ESL at LA high. It's a rough school. Sadly, in its glory days, it was the school where the tv show Room 222 with Karen Valentine, Pete Hayes and Michael Constantine. Room 222 was a tv show about a great black teacher who tries to instill good messages about tolerance to his students. Loved that show. The school has really fallen to ruin. Bummer.

Hello RedDonnaAnn; You ain't neva lied. I graduated from there in 1967. I don't fully grasp the mental goings on in the heads of todays youth. But I guess since I ain't today's youth I ain' supposed to. Young folk dyin' like flies all over the place. And for what? That's what mystifies me. For what? Life.

Any surprise that it's only a couple of shootings per day at LA schools? The city is an excrement sandwich. What happened to this once great city?

Two things of which we can be sure. The shooters did not have a weapons permit, and California's strict gun laws are irrelevant.
03:41 AM on 02/25/2012
So let's do away with the gun laws so these shootings stop, right?
05:44 AM on 02/25/2012
No one said that. Attack, attack, attack... what's the point of that?

These gangbangers are friends of yours? My insincere condolences. The herd needs to be thinned with respect to these depravedindividuals. I can only hope they do it to themselves and save valuable police time and resources.

I'm sick and sad. I grew up in Compton a long time ago and it was tough but not like this. Hollywood High was uptown. I pity the people who still live In LA.
La Cuidad De La Reina de Los Angeles, not so much

We need to change the war on drugs. We need to pull the teeth from the Cartels. We need to pull the military back and police our own borders, the war is here, and we need to use the gun laws we have.
My condolences to the victims families.
