Lucy Lawless Climbs Noble Discoverer Oil-Drilling Ship For Greenpeace Protest

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Television actress Lucy Lawless climbed aboard an oil-drilling ship Friday in New Zealand, joining six Greenpeace activists to try to stop the vessel from setting off for the Arctic.

Speaking from atop a 174-foot (53-meter) drilling tower aboard the Noble Discoverer in Port Taranaki, Lawless told The Associated Press on Friday that wind gusts were making it difficult to stay put but that she and the other protesters planned to stay there for "as long as we possibly can." She said she had a "little bit" of food and some provisions with her.

The protesters hung banners from the drilling derrick reading "Stop Shell" and "(hashtag)SaveTheArctic."

The ship is chartered by oil company Shell. Shona Geary, the company's New Zealand spokeswoman, said the ship was due to leave over the weekend for a drilling program in the Arctic but that all operations aboard had come to a stop.

"We are taking a very calm and measured approach to this," she said.

Police spokesman Grant Ogilvie said early Friday afternoon that five police officers boarded the ship. They had made contact with the protesters and were trying to determine their intentions. The port remained open but access was restricted, Ogilvie said.

"The protesters are clearly breaking the law by trespassing on the ship," said Police Inspector Blair Telford in a statement.

Lawless, 43, a native New Zealander, is best known for her title role in "Xena: Warrior Princess." More recently she has starred in "Spartacus: Blood and Sand."

Lawless said she was taking direct protest action for the first time in her life to protest oil drilling and to draw attention to climate change.

"I've got three kids. My sole biological reason for being on this planet is to ensure that they can flourish, and they can't do that in a filthy, degraded environment," she said. "We need to stand up while we still can."

Greenpeace spokesman Nathan Argent said the ship was due to drill five exploratory wells during the Arctic summer. He said Greenpeace is concerned about the rush of companies trying to drill in the Arctic and the potential for catastrophic spills in the ecologically sensitive region.

"The oil companies are pushing the frontiers in the Arctic," he said. "There's a relentless push to get the last drops of oil."

In a statement, Shell said the actions of Greenpeace were jeopardizing everybody's safety.

"Shell has taken unprecedented steps to pursue safe, environmentally responsible exploration in shallow water off the coast of Alaska," the company said.

Why isn't Greenpeace protesting in China over their destruction of the environment? Oh, I forgot.
The protesters would be in prison for the rest of their lives. Nothing like picking a really safe country like New Zealand to protest.

Imagine the spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Remember those images of the oil belching from the pipe. Remember how long it took to even stop the leak, let alone clean it up.

Now imagine that in inhospitable waters. Imagine floating ice in the way so the leak cannot even be reached, let alone repaired. Imagine that same ice making ships to siphon the oil unable to reach the leak and deployable booms to contain the spill an unviable proposition.

A leak in the environment in question would be almost impossible to stop, assuming that Shell's plans would work (and why would they, BPs didn't in the Gulf of Mexico). Keep in mind that Prince William sound is STILL contaminated from the tanker leak. And that was just ONE bloody tanker (and it was 20 years ago).

Oh, and some of you need to remember that the US is not the centre of the Universe. Lucy Lawless is very well known in her country of birth. She doesn't need to do this for the publicity. She has a long pedigree of activism and charity involvement.

Yes, the really funny thing is that had we Americans been drilling in Yellowstone National Park the blowout would have been controlled in less than 72 hours.

Thank you, Ms. Lawless.

the point is that the oil companies are exploring previously untenable territories that are now hospitable because of climate change in the first place. now that the ice sheets are melting, instead of realizing what lies ahead, they are profiteering. im sure many will think they are simply 'pioneers' for identifying new business oppurtunities but if there is a mishap, we dont have time to clean it up- there is actual scientific reasons why the environmentalists are protesting, not simply because they have time on their hands. the real 'nutjobs' are the people who get a kick out of deriding others and believe that the way we are living now can go on forever. and please dont think you are clever for pointing out that environmentalists also use oil and oil based products. thats exactly their point- our over reliance on a resource that is going to dry up soon and is causing us to take ridiculous risks (like drilling at crazy depths and fouling up pristine territories) must stop. we have to look to alternative means (and i believe the possibilities are there, just needs some real government/public will). and as to the legality of lucy lawless's action- it was once legal for one man to own another. says a lot abt what can be decreed acceptable and what must be done to bring back justice

Does she think all those high-powered lights on set just power themselves? Does she take a row boat when she travels between New Zealand and the United States?

Most of the power generated here in NZ (where Lucy does most of her film work) is generated by renewable sources. Sure, we're burning fuel every time we fly State-side, but at least our national airline is actively trying to upgrade to more fuel efficient aircraft.

The oil industry has had record breaking profits in the last few years. They are raking in the money. Their execs and CEO's are getting huge salaries and bonuses. I wonder how much this has to do with the resistance to the Keystone pipeline. A week after Obama states that he won't sign off on leases that will take land from Americans through eminent domain, take Indian land that should be protected by treaties, and possibly contaminate our air, water and the land through the American breadbasket, the record profit making oil industry is gouging the American people for even more profit and to force Keystone down our throats. It's time to plan some type of boycott against the oil industry.

Panera Bread, Starbucks and Apple all had higher profit margins last year than Shell did. Are you going to boycott those companies, too?

Even though she wants to protect the environment, she still lives in this reality! Its not her fault we're so reliant on polluting fuels. whats she supposed to do to satisfy you? Go live in the woods?
04:51 PM on 02/24/2012
Here's some reality for you. Al Gore's mansion uses 20 times more electricity than the average America household. Its why we don't take the left wing loons seriously when they become "environmentalists."
