Methylene Chloride, Paint-Removing Chemical, Tied To 13 Deaths: CDC

Methylene Chloride

By DAVID N. GOODMAN   02/23/12 11:23 PM ET  AP

DETROIT -- The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning Thursday about using a common paint-stripping chemical to refinish bathtubs after tying it to 13 deaths in 10 states.

The CDC said the alert was based on research that began at Michigan State University. Scientists found 13 deaths between 2000 and 2011 of workers using products containing methylene chloride to strip paint from residential bathtubs. Three of the deaths were in Michigan, and the remaining 10 were reported in nine other states.

Methylene chloride is widely used as a degreaser and paint remover in industrial and home-improvement products.

"Each death occurred in a residential bathroom with inadequate ventilation," the CDC said in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. "Protective equipment, including a respirator, either was not used or was inadequate to protect against methylene chloride vapor."

The report said the chemical "has been recognized as potentially fatal to furniture strippers and factory workers but has not been reported previously as a cause of death among bathtub refinishers."

Using methylene chloride-based products in confined spaces like bathrooms presents great risks, the CDC said. It urged worker safety and public health agencies, manufacturers and trade groups to "communicate the extreme hazards" of their use to employers, workers and the public.

"Employers should strongly consider alternative methods of bathtub stripping," it said.

The alert's co-author, Michigan State's Kenneth Rosenman, said it is better to keep the chemical out of the bathroom. Its vapors are heavier than air and likely remain in bathtubs after each application.

"To use products containing methylene chloride safely, work areas must be well-ventilated, and when levels of methylene chloride exceed recommended exposure limits, workers must use protective equipment," Rosenman, chief of the school's Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, said in a statement Thursday. "In a small bathroom, it is unlikely these products can be used safely."

The co-author of the CDC warning, Michigan State industrial hygienist Debra Chester, first investigated the 2010 death of a 52-year-old man who owned a bathtub refinishing business. She then discovered two other Michigan deaths, leading to a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health investigation that turned up 13 deaths.

Twenty years ago I was a sophomore merchant marine cadet at sea asigned to the 'paint locker'. It was a busy day and I was handing out paint and cleaning brushes like crazy when next thing I know I'm in sick bay.

It happens fast.

The warnings are clearly marked on the container, If people would read and actually believe the dangers can really happen then I am sure they would take precautions, sorry but what the cdc needs to understand is you cant fix stupid!!!!!

Quick, tell Janet Neopolitino of the DHS! The Taliban will be renovating bathrooms in America shortly. The TSA should be on alert, since the issue has laready slipped through the hands of the CDC!

I use these chemicals all the time_ in a spray booth with a resperator on. The containers ALWAYS have explicit warnings on them, both the commercial and the ones I sometimes buy at a big box store. Now I guess I'll have to go through more government red tape 'cause someone doesn't heed warnings. What next they are going to turn off the electricity because some weekend warrior electrocuted himself doing something he was in no way qualified for. Scares me in Loew's some of the things they sell to novices.

13 deathes in 12 years isn't exactly a massacre. A stronger warning label should do it.

Kinda reminds me of what John Wayne said: "Life is tough; it's even tougher if you're stupid".

Agreed. Also reminds me of what Einstein said: "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe."

No kidding. I worked in paint and body work in auto and aircraft industries. The labels and warnings on paint strippers and all paint products should be read and understood. Most people tend to think that the warnings are exaggerated. Those warnings are fact, not fiction. When using paint strippers, a dust mask is not enough protection either. A charcoal filter mask is best. Same goes for rubber gloves and other skin protections. Eye protection also should be adhered to. Paint strippers are definately skull and cross bone chemicals.

What, another needless government intrusion on our lives? Would you rather have an ugly tub, or be fertilizer? Next they'll be telling us asbestus is bad for us. I can't find it anywhere anymore. And then there are those stupid shots. No one dies from TB, or polio, or small pox anymore. Who needs government when we have those big corporations looking out for us. Sometimes they even put warning labels on their product for us to ignore.

My friend, you must remember that irony is completely and utterly lost on most Americans.

I first read of this in the early 1970's. Nothing new here, just lack of education. All need to ask, "Who supresses this information?"
01:00 PM on 02/24/2012
It's also a good cover up for murder. My neice, who by trade, refinished bathtubs, mysteriously died using this product. When investigated it was noted her safety equipment, including her mask, and her cellphone were never found. All the windows were mysteriously shut tight. A Wittness had stated she had all her equipent, was on her cellphone, and was opening the windows when last seen. Coincidently, she was in the process of starting her own refinnishing business, and her boss had recently discovered this tidbit of info.
Unfortunately, CDC closed the investigation as her error in having not followed safety guidelines.
Only thing left for her 3 small children is KARMA. Wish there was something more for them.
