Newt Gingrich: Washington Gay Marriage Law Will Be Enacted In 'The Right Way' If Approved By Voters

By BRIAN BAKST   02/24/12 04:22 PM ET  AP

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich declined Friday to outright reject a new law legalizing same-sex marriage in Washington state, saying if it is approved by voters it will at least be enacted "the right way."

The former House speaker's comments came on a visit to the state Capitol where he also met privately with Republican legislators. Washington's Democratic governor signed the gay marriage bill last week and it will take effect in June unless opponents can gather enough signatures to force a fall referendum.

Gingrich cited the possibility of a public vote in appraising the hot-button issue, noting that judges have authorized same-sex marriage in other places.

"I think at least they're doing it the right way, which is going through voters, giving them a chance to vote and not having a handful of judges arbitrarily impose their will," Gingrich said.

A November referendum is not guaranteed. Opponents of the Washington law need more than 120,000 valid voter signatures needed by June 6 to put the law on hold pending a referendum.

Gingrich made clear he opposes gay marriage personally and would vote no on such a referendum if one ever came up in his home state.

His posture was different than rival Rick Santorum, who campaigned in Washington the same day the law was signed.

Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, questioned the effectiveness of having states decide the definition of marriage. He supports a federal constitutional amendment making marriage exclusively between a man and a woman.

"I think that at least from my perspective it tends to water down marriage instead of encouraging men and women to form healthy marriages, and that to me should be the objective of the government because that is in the best interests of our society," Santorum said after a meeting with church leaders organizing a ballot drive to block the Washington law from taking hold.

Washington state has had domestic partnership laws since 2007, and in 2009 passed an "everything but marriage" expansion of that law, which was ultimately upheld by voters after a referendum challenge.

Minnesota and North Carolina have measures on upcoming ballots to write gay marriage bans into their state constitutions. And same-sex marriage opponents in Maryland have taken the first steps to bring legislation legalizing gay marriage passed by the state's Legislature this week to a voter referendum on the November ballot.

Gingrich has spent two days campaigning in Washington ahead of the state's March 3 caucuses. He heads Saturday to San Francisco for a speech to the California GOP convention, where he said he'll dissect President Barack Obama's latest energy address "paragraph by paragraph."

""I think that at least from my perspective it tends to water down marriage instead of encouraging men and women to form healthy marriages,"

The serial adulterer is commenting on "healthy marriages"?

Funny how whenever a Christian conservative claims that same-sex marriage will have some nonsensical ill effect on society, he/she never explains exactly *how* that ill effect will result.

Mr. Gingrich as a man who claims to know the Constitution, the Federalist Papers and the Declaration of Independence you seem to have a short term memory dysfunction when it comes to civil liberties and how they were enacted and why they were enacted through the court system. Mr. Gingrich I suspect you would be willing to put the entire civil rights and gender rights issues to a public ballot as well!
Honestly, the gay and lesbian community does not care what you think is "the right way".
Mr. Santorum...your "watering down" marriage and your option for an amendment to make marriage between a man and a woman I wish, without question, that the man you so reverently praise could walk the Earth again. The evils committed in His name would "turn His stomach".
The reality is that religious organizations need to be excluded from the action of same sex marriage...a true separation of Church and State, thereby, disarming their hateful comments and bigotry and a true enforcement of the rights for all Americans.
WE SHALL OVERCOME.

His "right way" is not consistent with the "Republican Form of Government" guaranteed to the States by Article IV of the Constitution.

Putting protection of the rights of a suppressed minority in the hands of a plurality that includes all the oppressors is the best way to prevent equal protection of the law and oppress a minority group.

Gingrich is not trying to support good government, he is manipulating the system to suppress gay rights for as long as possible.

Considering this, and that Gingrich claimed that he had extramarital affairs in a fit of patriotism, I consider his definition of "patriotism" to be perverse.

So Newt...if the union of one man and one woman is so precious then we really should vote on a bill to make divorce illegal..right? Oops!

Stop with the Gay Bashing... Stop with the Abortion and Birth Control issues... Get focused on the real issues, unemplyment, homeless, education. I am so mad at our government.. I love my country.. but not our government.. Yes I do vote, and I will continue to do so.. The problem is that it gets harder and harder to find some to vote for.. When will the government see what the real problems are.. Please stop the iner fighting and get the USA back on its feet. God Bless America,..............

I don't think there's anything arbitrary about giving equal civil rights to all whether they're decided by a judge, a legislature, or the people.

Nor does anyone have any sort of proof that same sex marriage "waters down" marriage. No matter what these people think, homosexuals aren't just going to give up and become straight if you deny them their rights enough. Straight people will still get married if same sex marriage exists. I just don't understand Santorum's argument, or why anyone would think that way.

"The right way." Does that mean that EVERY piece of legislation should go up for popular vote, or jus the ones he hopes will be voted down?

This coming from the same person who said not long ago that there's a "gay fascism" threatening the country. No surprise - some days Gingrich is just a typical conservative who seems to have no understanding of the purpose of legislatures and an independent judiciary and other days he's just absolutely crazy. Depends on his mood, I guess. Professor Gingrich is a real intellectual.

No one who is against gay marriage has the slightest clue about the meaning of the phrase " equality for all."

Less government except for those things I believe. This is today's GOP - they have never wanted smaller government. Their agenda state to state is to take away women's rights, let the poor starve and privatize social security. Really looking out for their neighbors don't you agree? And to establish a federal law stating marriage can only be between a man and a woman - my god this is the united states not some crackpot country. Take a look at our friends the Dutch - legalized same sex marriage, legalized pot, even legalized prostitution. Are the heterosexuals in that country devastated over this? No. And why not? Because they believe in equality for all human beings. This GOP is the poster child for hate, racism, and killing the American dream - not supporting it.

It is stupefying to me how many elected officials (or past elected officials) do not understand how the Constitution works, or why it was set up the way it is. Here we have Newt Gingrich, a former Speaker Of The House, who does not understand that the majority cannot vote on the rights of the minority. Unbelievable.
