Celeberties don't "fascinate" me...... the excellent movies they're in do...... and lately even remotely good movies are hard to come by.

Talented people play a part in inspiring us to become better people, but I can find a hero without the hyped up celebrities.

It would help if we could all get a life.

Maybe it lets us focus on them to avoid seeing our own flaws.

One flaw we can't hide from anyone -- mean gossip.

Disclaimer: By "us" "we" "our" I do not mean everyone.
Oh yes, this disclaimer, also -- My opinions do not reflect the opinions of Huff or anyone reading it! Ha!

I for one do not care about celebrities at all,the problem I see is how they feel about their selves 90% seem to feel they are above the law they can kick the sh-- out of someone or do drugs or shoot somebody, drunk driving you name it, things the average person would be lock a way for years but because who they are or what they are they are treated different by our court system take a momunt an look back the last 10 or so years ,movie stars, sport stars, bankers, politician ,they feel their above the rest of us.are they really that much better then you or I? I think not. Wake up America

Why are we so impressed with celebrities? I'm not. Oh, they're pretty. And entertaining in the movies. But as to their personal lives...just don't care.

I do have a friend who breathlessly asks "Did you see what Suri Cruise is doing? What do you think about her wearing lipstick?" Really? You give a damn about what some kid who you don't know and who you will never know is wearing?

I think we make far too much of celebrities which is why they receive such ridiculous pay - athletes too. It appears that the people who have the least going on in their life, seem to have to know everything about a celeb. Otherwise, if you are leading a full life, why would they be of paramount importance to anyone.

I do not find celebrities anymore interesting than the lives of non-celebrities. Haven't cared about them since I was 15 or so. However, I am fascinated with the level of celebrity interest shown by many and the level of interest shown in the public media.

My lack of interest, while trivial (N=1), is an indicator that this point of view is possible. Others could try it for awhile and see if it works for them. If there were a few of us, a cadre, we could meet somewhere (public park, coffeeshop, library?) and develop a 2- or 3-step program to help people withdraw from their interest in celebrities.

Of course, the hardest steps are not the decision to ignore them or doing the withdrawal. The hard steps come a later in the process as you start to live life according to your own beliefs, standards, and interests. Living free of celebrity role models can be frightening, but rewarding. Celebrate yourself and those who you care about. Life in the moment where you are with those who share your life and care about you. Live locally. Live free.

Its not so much that we are, rather the public is continually force fed this stuff and it tends to occupy too much time and space in our everyday lives when it otherwise wouldn't

Hint: We are not intrigued by the lives of stars; the media is, because the stars are a part of the media and the media is self-promoting. It's called cynergy.

The global corproations that now own the film studios and the TV networks also own the newspapers and the magazines... and a sizeable portion of the Internet. So the news drivels on and on about the Oscars, followed by the entertainment news shows. Then you have all the commercials and eve mentions within shows. Add to that articles like this on HuffPo, which is joined at the hip to AOL. Is AOL still owned by Time Warner? Time Warner also owns Time Magazine, HBO, Warner Brothers..... so articles like this are all a part of the game to convince us that we all give a damn about the stars.

I have to add: I worked at the Oscars about 15 times between 1980-2008. Since 2000 the Ocars coverage and event status has gone into super-overdrive. It was always a big event, with the Governors Ball and parties following, but the coverage has become insane. Inside the bubble of the venue, you don't notice it. My biggest laughs last time I worked it was to go out and see the US media interviewing the foreign media and the foreign media interviewing the US media because they had nobody else to talk to. ABSURDITY to the extreme.

You must have meant they are "distracting us" ... away from ... "the narrow road to eternal life."

I do agree they are distracting us--not sure if reducing that gets us closer to an eternal life. It might improve this life from day to day.

Heheheh. Satan's imps. Pretty cute. Kinda silly, but cute.

Life is either eternal or its not. Watching a movie or sleeping with your neighbor's wife or cheating on your taxes or belonging to any certain religious cult isn't going to make one iota of difference.
