Peter Gleick, Climate Scientist, Investigated After Heartland Leak

By Laird Harrison

OAKLAND, Calif, Feb 23 (Reuters) - The prestigious Pacific Institute climate research group has opened an investigation of its president and founder, Peter Gleick, after he admitted fraudulently obtaining documents from global warming skeptics challenging his work.

The Oakland-based institute revealed its inquiry into the widening controversy in a terse statement posted on Wednesday on its website, hours after the San Francisco Chronicle said it was discontinuing an online blog that Gleick had been writing for the newspaper.

"The Board of Directors of the Pacific Institute is deeply concerned and is actively reviewing information about the recent events involving its president ... and documents pertaining to the Heartland Institute," the board statement said.

Gleick himself went public about the matter on Monday with a statement confessing that he had posed as someone else to obtain internal memos from the Heartland Institute, a think tank that argues skeptic positions, among them that climate change is not caused by human activity and that health hazards from tobacco have been exaggerated.

In that statement, carried on the Huffington Post website, Gleick admitted a "serious lapse of my own professional judgment and ethics."

Even before his mea culpa, Gleick, a renowned authority on global freshwater issues and winner of a MacArthur "genius" grant, had resigned last Thursday as chairman of the American Geophysical Union's Task Force on Scientific Ethics.

DEBATE AND DENIAL

The scandal illustrates the increasingly harsh tone in the public and political debate over global warming, despite the consensus among mainstream scientists that rising levels of heat-trapping "greenhouse" gases, primarily caused by human activity, are altering the planet's climate.

Heartland is among a group of skeptic organizations that have written extensively about the so-called Climategate case in which thousands of climate scientists' emails were hacked via the University of East Anglia in Britain.

The initial batch of those emails were released in 2009 and a second set in December 2011 as a major climate conference was getting under way in Durban, South Africa.

Heartland cited those emails in claiming that the scientists who wrote them were trying to cover up evidence that cast doubt on human-caused climate change. Five separate investigations later found no wrongdoing on the part of the scientists. The source of the hacking was never identified.

Gleick has admitted that he obtained various internal Heartland documents -- including a fundraising plan, a meeting agenda and a budget -- by soliciting them under someone else's name, then forwarding them anonymously to members of the media and other climate scientists.

One of those lists dozens of major U.S. corporations from a wide range of industries as donors to the Heartland Institute, among them tobacco and energy companies. Another lists consultants Heartland has paid, one of them hired to devise a "climate education project" for public school children.

In a written statement on Monday, Heartland Institute President Joseph Bast acknowledged that all of the documents Gleick circulated were authentic except one, titled "2012 Heartland Climate Strategy," which Bast called a forged memo.

Gleick claimed he received this document anonymously in the mail and that it provided the impetus for him to use a false identity in requesting additional records from Heartland in a bid to verify its source.

'BLINDED BY FRUSTRATION'

"My judgment was blinded by my frustration with the ongoing efforts -- often anonymous, well-funded, and coordinated -- to attack climate science and scientists ... and by the lack of transparency of the organizations involved," Gleick wrote.

Bast said release of the allegedly forged document had damaged Heartland's reputation, and he threatened legal action. "Gleick's crime was a serious one," he wrote.

"The documents he admits stealing contained personal information about Heartland staff members, donors, and allies, the release of which has violated their privacy and endangered their personal safety," Bast said.

The incident has raised concern among climatologists that scientific credibility might be tarnished.

"We think it unfortunate that this has the potential to deflect the conversation away from the scientific consensus that the climate change is taking place," said Christine McEntee, executive director of the American Geophysical Union.

It also raised ethical questions for journalists. Alana Nguyen, executive producer of the San Francisco Chronicle's website, said the newspaper had discontinued Gleick's unpaid blog because it was part of a feature reserved for local "luminaries."

"We decide who is a luminary," she said. "That kind of admission is something that affects your reputation in the community, and we strive to have people with a good reputation in the community."

Any journalist who obtained information in the way Gleick did would be fired from a traditional newsroom, said Kelly McBride, senior faculty at the Poynter Institute journalism school. She said reporters should not use information from the memos that Gleick obtained without taking pains to verify it. The media has done a pretty good job of muddying the waters. But, the relevant facts continue to be the following:

1) None of the documents produced by Gleick (other than the fake strategy document) contain any smoking guns against Heartland.

2) Gleick almost certainly forged the strategy document.

3) Gleick will be subjected to a withering investigation, funded by some pretty deep (and angry, assuming a pocket can be angry) pockets.

4) Glick's "modified limited hangout" strategy, employed soooo successfully by the likes of John Edwards, is only going to make his climb-down even more embarassing.

5) Gleick is going to disappoint his defenders when all the facts are known.

6) Gleick's behavior only further highlights the dodgy behavior of the AGW priesthood. Those with pattern recognition skills will recognize....the pattern.

Dr Glick Lied to heartland in order to verify information. He admitted he used the technique.

He didn't lie to me or science.

Heartland is a despicable organization that routinely misrepresents science and distorts the truth.

For instance their positions on second hand smoke and this from 1998:

Global Warming Benefits May Exceed Risks ( http://web.archive.org/web/20000611110432/http://www.heartland.org/environment/may98/global.htm )

Denialgate proves a system of organized deception of Americans to benefit polluters and industry avoiding legitimate regulation.

Marine species at risk as oceans acidify

British scientists say the current level of carbon dioxide emissions will wipe out about 30 per cent of the world's marine species by the end of the century. ( http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-02-20/marine-species-at-risk-as-oceans-acidify/3840854/?site=melbourne )

I think people should feel much more guilty if they knew warming was real and the let organizations like heartland go on unchallenged.

to - proper word for your sentence as in "listen to"

I guess you went to government skools eh Mr Frog?

And yes - I believe the health hazards from tobacco smoke HAVE BEEN EXAGGERATED. Furthermore, health hazards from SMOKING has also been exaggerated. I worked in a SMOKY bar for EIGHT YEARS and I have a tendency for asthma and NEVER did I have any trouble with breathing during those eight years. Sometimes the smoke was so thick it made my EYES water but that was the ONLY effect ever from second hand smoke in that bar.

For those who believe that the strategy memo must be forged because the Heartland "skeptics" don't think of themselves in the way the memo imples, I offer Exhibit A: The famous Luntz memo, advising Republicans how to sell their basically anti-environment programs. Compare Luntz's recommendations to Heartland's statements and actions: http://www.ewg.org/files/LuntzResearch_environment.pdf

So for Finkelstein Fan we metaphorically need one of those plastic plates at the high chair that keep the foods separate.

We have either a discussion of ethics.

Or we can have a discussion of climate science.

But the ethics dont make the science more or less true unless the scientific argument was originally dependent on them. That is not the case with AGW.

Unfortunately, this ISN'T about the Heartland Inst it is about the ethics of a climate scientist. Supposedly said scientists are the 'moral authority' on climate issues and wish to impose taxes on a global level based on this 'authority'.
Every time they are caught acting unethically (which is frequent) that 'moral authority' is eroded and so is their argument.
That you can't seem to understand this, or refuse to address it, is typical of the whole AGW movement. As in - "We're right! You're wrong! No discussion! The end justifies the means!" This ISN'T science - this is fascism.

We should be having a discussion about ethics and the fraudulent activity of this climate scientist... but, as with most good propagandists you seem to want to divert the subject on to other things rather than stay on topic.
I'm not here to debate climate 'science' as you don't do science... you do 'consensus'.
There is NOTHING more anti-science in the world today than the belief that science is done through 'consensus'. (The 'consensus' is that the moon is made out of green cheese, therefore, by your stands, it is).
I see once again you're trying to achieve a 'consensus' by rallying the troops around to attack and insult me. This is also a losing game. I'm not 15 and never bowed to peer pressure even when I was.
The 'ethics' of the scientists involved with climate research are extremely relevant to the AGW issue as they can't actually 'prove' their claims (that's why they rely on consensus), so the morality of their actions reflects on their judgements. If we can't expect them to bow to legal ethics, than how can we expect them to follow professional or scientific ethics? And these are the same people we're assured are the 'moral authority' on the subject.
As I said - this is a losing sum game for you Jtt. So sad, too bad.

Finkel, proof is a quality only in mathematics. Proof does not exist in science. We can't prove that the earth is round, that we revolve around the sun, or that gravity exists.

What we can do is say that based on the preponderance of evidence, as assimilated, tested and reviewed by the best minds available, based on our understanding of the laws and principles that govern nature, we believe those things to be true. This is what you are denying- that consensus is used to create modern science.

Having said that, the article is about both the indisputable dirty tricks and anti-science agenda of Heartland, and the ethical lapse of Dr, Gleick. Niether of these things bear upon the reality of global warming, as the theory existed long before either was around.

A discussion about ethics is welcome, but to tar the entire scientific community with one person's actions is rather silly. To say that this calls into question the foundations of modern science is delusional. You don't strike me as delusional.
01:58 PM on 02/27/2012
Agree with you - consensus is what got Galileo locked up in prison - because the consensus did not agree with his scientific findings. Consensus also got many women burned at the stake in Salem, Mass because the "mob" were sure that they were witches.

Bottom line here: Now we know about Heartland's paid-for scientists and its scheme to put anti-science propaganda in the public schools.
And we've learned that a lot of corporate reporters get all dewy eyed about the ethics of spoofing a "think tank" to get documents but don't care at all about an organization dedicating to distorting the truth about climate science.

bottom line here is another climate scientist was caught being involved in fraudulent activities and forging documents before releasing them to the media.
That he tricked Heartland out of the documents doesn't concern me one iota - that he forged one to incriminate them when he couldn't find anything else is extremely concerning. That you'd turn a blind eye to that activity just proves that AGW is activism NOT science.

"AGW is activism NOT science." no one said it was. Stop trying to connect the two. The scinece stands on its own.

The ethical arguments for what Gleick did do as well, on their own.

You basically cant handle simultaneous argumentative threads without getting all tangled up in it. Can you?

I think thats an important observation.

The most damaging document was the 'Strategy Memo'. No skeptic would ever describe their side as 'anti-climate' or as trying to 'stop teachers from teaching science'. People like Gleick certainly feel that way about Heartland institute though. So that type of language tells us something about the identity of the author....who most certainly isn't a member of the Heartland Institute. You may think they are dead wrong, but that's not how they think of themselves, period. So, put 2 and 2 together. Now I don't know that Gleick wrote it, but it sure looks that way. Not just the strange language, but details of the donations are very wrong, and it's incredibly unlikely that a real strategy memo would have such a big error. This is going to get much dirtier.

He claims he received it in the mail from 'anonymous'.
"Really officer. I found this new TV on the sidewalk. How the window of that TV store got broken I'll never know" Yeah right!
That he engaged in fraud to obtain the other docs discredits ANY excuses he makes for the forged one. He provided to the media and so he staked HIS reputation on it at the same time.
The fact that AGW proponents even need to use language like 'denier' and 'anti-science' and the 'science is settled' simply proves that their whole movement is more concerned with propaganda than truth. Sad, sad, sad!
