Why Rihanna And Chris Brown Can't Erase The Past, No Matter How Much They Collaborate

On Monday, Rihanna and Chris Brown each released a remix track featuring the other; Brown joined Rihanna for a few verses on the innuendo-iced "Birthday Cake," and she reciprocated with vocals on his club jam "Turn Up the Music." Considering the pair's well-known history of domestic violence, the new music has been greeted, to put it mildly, with consternation.

The Daily Beast's Allison Samuels compared the reunion to the toxic orbiting of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, while Alexandra Petri over at the Washington Post wondered whether the whole thing is "about creating a narrative of Bad Romance and reconciliation to loop viewers in." The New York Times' Jon Caramanica was even more forthright:

"It displays an advanced understanding of marketing and an understanding of moral obligations and ethics that's not much more than rudimentary. It is a woman publicly accepting her abuser - nothing more, nothing less."

Oh yes, and Perez Hilton called it "genius," for whatever that's worth.

But seriously, the fact that so many critics are upset by this reunion begs certain questions: What does collaboration really mean, and why are the stakes of this particular case so high?

Here's my theory. Even though we know that collaborations like this are almost always commercial in motivation, we like to imagine that the artist's choice of a creative partner gives us some kind of access to their private, emotional world. Collaboration suggests a personal relationship, and our eavesdropping on that interplay conjures up a feeling of intimacy between audience and artist that is very powerful. We feel like we know what's really going on with Rihanna and Chris Brown because we are virtually present in the studio with them, and here, the thing we're meant to know is that everything's OK now. The problem is, the strategy won't work; because of an infamous leaked photograph, we were also virtually present in the car that night three years ago when Brown beat Rihanna till her face was bruised and bloodied. And that kind of terrifying intimacy is not easily forgotten.

For Rihanna, the inclusion of Brown in "Birthday Cake" could represent the resolution of a dissonance that has plagued her image ever since the attack. The central paradox of celebrity is that generally, no matter how much information you learn about the star, you never get any closer to their actual interiority; yet, the leaked photograph was an authentic moment of access - you can't help but feel Rihanna's fear and pain. The singer's projection of a persona based in sadomasochistic sexuality and dominance over men (even when she's playing power bottom) was deeply disrupted by the very real image of her violated face.

Suddenly, singing about the seductive charms of an abusive relationship (as Rihanna does with Eminem in "Love the Way You Lie") takes on a tone of unsettling poignancy. S/M-tinged photoshoots make us shift in our seats. The fantasy image flickers, and a flesh-and-blood victim peeks through.

Of course, Rihanna would understandably like to restore the protective stability of her image, if only to halt speculation that she is doomed to the macabre waltz of abusive codependence. Hence, the collaboration: The original moment of upsetting intimacy should be canceled out by the new moment of empowerment - in our seeing that she chooses Brown. It's just that, with that photo in the back of our minds, we can't help but worry about her fitness to judge.

Chris Brown's situation is even more constrained. Rap and hip-hop have a long tradition of redemption/forgiveness narratives where in male artists who in many cases were just rapping on one track about drugs, violence, and misogyny suddently tone down their swagger in the next song to apologize and ask for forgiveness from God, Mrs. Jackson, mom, their girlfriends or whoever. This sacrifice of masculinity is supposedly so great that their contrition cannot be doubted; we, the audience, are meant to forgive and forget without question.

Chris Brown has tried to take advantage of this trope, but it hasn't really worked. His dead-eyed, remorseless apologies were supposed to automatically atone for his sins, but something about that picture of Rihanna's face just won't allow it. We've seen too much of Brown's rage, lack of compassion, arrogance and immaturity in her bruises to stop "hating" so easily.

I can see how the public's resistance might be frustrating to them: After all, the industry has effectively welcomed Brown back into the fold by way of a Grammy, and if, in this collaboration, Rihanna is symbolically absolving him as well, why can't we just get over it? You know the cliche: If the victim forgives the abuser, then it's none of our business.

But unfortunately for Brown, that photograph makes it our business. We viscerally understand that both he and Rihanna are not just images - they have real bodies that can make terribly real choices. It's the kind of knowledge that the celebrity fantasy just won't accomodate, a blemish that even the savviest PR stunt can't airbrush away.

My question: If someone abuses another, is truly remorseful and changes their behavior, are they eligible for forgiveness?

Yes. Unfortunately, Chris Brown has not ticked off any of these boxes.

Forgiveness yes but not to forget. Once an abuser always an abuser. No one should ever be with an abuser.

Information pertaining to the mis-information feminists have introduced as facts are indeed just examples of their doctrine and their questionable mantras. Feminism is not interested in equality, it has demonstrated clearly that they are into disunity and promoting gender dysfunction..

Feminists claim that Superbowl Sunday creates the Most DV against Females
One in Four.

It's all propaganda and is FALSE.

ain't that the truth..what did they expect?

be your kids role models and quit holding artist who are flawed human beings to a standard you dont hold your self to. chris brown and rhianna are young and both have made mistakes and will continue to make many more before their lives are over it is what we all are entitled to do live and learn from our mistakes...chris or rhianna dont owe the world nothing but to be entertainers after that their jobs are done if she wants to forgive and start fresh with chris who is anybody to open their mouth about it you dont like it i suggest you get over it asap... it is what it is... i love it more power to them

People should let it go. Obviously, they have. People do make mistakes and can learn from their previous actions. People shouldn't keep badgering CB because they don't like his attitude. If you don't like him, don't buy his records; don't suport him. However, I think if people are going to get on him, they need to get on her too. Her actions haven't been so commendable either. This is the wrong relationship to make a forum for domestic violence. Why highlight their relationship? The majoirty of the time they don't act like mature adults and they do ridiculous stuff even when they're not together.

Some people are using this to spew their own propaganda

Just another typical you know what...

Normally I would say it's their business stay out of it... but not this time. The nature of domestic violence is such that without community involvement it can go on forever and some women only leave their abuser in a body bag. Most women are silent about it for years and for Rihanna to release this and basically say oh well I went back and everything is all fine now...it won't happen again is kind of sickening. I believe all people to some extent can redeem themselves but if I were Rihanna I would not want to set the example of going back to an abuser no matter what the reason. Yes people shouldn't imitate pop artists or use them as a moral compass but they do.

but what if chris brown really did change? just because you made a mistake in the past doesn't necessarily mean you'd do it again
09:37 AM on 02/26/2012
No he didn't! He just busted out a window on the Good Morning America set because someone asked him about the incident. If he really did change, he would not have acted that way. That's some one who clearly has anger problems.
09:56 AM on 02/26/2012
he stole a woman's phone recently for taking pictures with her friends at a night club. the woman has filed a police report since chris refused to return the phone. he really hasn't change at all. he can blame the media and everyone else as much as he wants but if we haven't seen a change from this guy people won't forgive him. plus its kinda hard to when u hear about him stealing peoples phones, throwing chairs and tables out of buildings and acting like he never tried to kill a woman a few years ago.

Gee,could it be because he has never really apologized or taken responsibility for his actions? Or that he still hasn't learned to control his anger and has severe anger management issues?

If Rihanna has gotten over this, why is the public still so up in arms? At the end of the day, it's her life and her decision. She definitely doesn't come off as the type that doesn't know what she's getting into, and given her history of violence against her younger brothers, I highly doubt the violence between her and Chris was a one-way street. They're doing what they want to do and speculating about the reasons isn't going to get anybody anywhere, so let it go.

Chris and Rihanna will never live down that night. It comes with being a celebrity and they shouldn't. ''DV'' is serious and her beating got people talking about it again.

If people stopped giving her attention for doing stupid things, she would stop doing stupid things.

She has got what she wants from collaborating with this thug; publicity. She's laughing all the way to the bank as her loyal fans will continue to support her regardless of how little respect she shows them in return.
11:50 AM on 02/25/2012
Wow you really think you know it all huh? Well in case you haven't noticed. They BOTH collaborated on the songs against their label's wishes. Meaning their labels aren't going to put the songs on iTunes to be purchased. Chris Brown and Rihanna themselves posted the (illegal download) links so they could give their fans what they wanted. If you knew the whole situation you would know that Rihanna ASKED her fans to vote on who THEY think should be on the song with her, and suprisingly enough.....the majority of them voted for guess who? Chris Brown. The media is making it a big deal...So no, they aren't getting paid for it. There was a purpose behind doing a duet..Hmm, maybe forgiveness was the motive? But, who am I? No one.

If Rihanna wants to be with Chris Brown, feh, let her. It's not like she's tied to him because of economic dependence, or they have kids and she wants them to have their father in their life. The rich ARE different. It's imperative for an economically disadvantaged woman to not engage in abusive relationships because she'll be stuck there. Rihanna can leave any time she wants to. She probably has great health insurance should she be injured again. I think this is akin to celebrities who use drugs - they can afford the rehab and legal costs that the average person cannot. Unfortunately, we look to our celebrities for cues on how to act, without the realization that they are in a privileged position to deal with that lifestyle.

Why Rihanna And Chris Brown Can't Erase The Past, No Matter How Much They Collaborate

Because the media and the public won't let it go. They rehash it ad nauseum. You would think they were personally involved.

Yes.
08:44 AM on 02/25/2012
It's only been rehashed because she has decided to post on her twitter a duet with her attacker. If she didn't do that, this wouldnt've happened. Everyone was over it before she decided to use it for her gain.

Where have you been? You must not watch the news. The media has figured out that Chris Brown does not handle harsh backlash well at all, so since then, they have purposely had random segments antagonizing him for things that he's done when they weren't even relevant at the the present time. Yes, he's an immature kid who still has growing up to do, but how can he grow if people keep throwing this incident in his face. I understand.... Take up for your mistakes, be a man. But it's still not ok to publicly bash and bully a human being for one thing they did wrong. He clearly had/has an anger problem. For you to say that this is just now being rehashed is very ignorant, because obviously you haven't been watching the tv the past 3 years. They attack him every chance they get because they know he eventually falls into responding back to negativity in not the most mature way, and they enjoy getting a kick out of making him upset.
11:42 AM on 02/25/2012
(Cont.) So stop with the "oh this is just now being talked about again". Please, I've been hearing about this incident literally almost everyday since it happened. Once the media finds someone new to target they pounce and they don't let up until some gets hurt or.....dies. MJ. Whitney. If Chris Brown were dead tomorrow everyone would be sad and remorseful for bullying him the way that they have. I haven't seen this much hatred for a human being since Michael Jackson....and guess what in case you haven't "heard" He's 6 feet deep right now... What Chris Brown did was VERY wrong, but don't condone the media bullying either. Rihanna did the song against her label's will because she herself is tired of hearing about. I'm pretty sure she's trying to just move on with her life... I'd be tired of hearing about the incident and seeing my beaten face on the news, just for the sake of them hating him for what he did. The media doesn't care about Rihanna personally, because if they did...They wouldn't constantly harp and sometimes JOKE about the incident, or use the police report and her beaten face to make things change.. They would say "Chris Brown we advise you to get help!"
