Adam Sandler Sets Razzie Award Record For 'Jack And Jill', 'Just Go With It'

02/25/12 09:28 PM ET  AP

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — When Adam Sandler's bad, he's really bad, according to voters for the Razzies, an Academy Awards spoof that singles out the worst movies of the year.

Sandler received a record 11 nominations Saturday for the Razzies as star, producer or writer on three 2011 movies – "Jack and Jill," "Just Go with It" and "Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star."

That more than doubled the previous record of five Razzie nominations held by Eddie Murphy for 2007's "Norbit."

Sandler's nominations include worst actor for both "Jack and Jill" and "Just Go with It" – and worst actress for "Jack and Jill," in which he plays a family man and his own twin sister.

Sandler also had two nominations as worst screen couple opposite Jennifer Aniston or Brooklyn Decker in "Just Go with It" and opposite Katie Holmes, Al Pacino or himself in "Jack and Jill."

As a producer, Sandler was credited with worst-picture and worst prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel nominations for both "Bucky Larson" and "Jack and Jill." He also shared in worst-screenplay nominations as a writer on both movies, and a worst-ensemble nomination for "Jack and Jill."

"It's almost karmic for someone to have made that much razz-able stuff in one year," said Razzies founder John Wilson. "He has angered someone really powerful, I would say."

Along with "Bucky Larson" and "Jack and Jill," worst-picture contenders are "New Year's Eve," "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1."

"Jack and Jill" led with 12 nominations, with "Transformers" second with nine and "Breaking Dawn" right behind with eight.

Razzie nominations were released on the eve of the Oscars. Winners will be announced on April Fool's Day.

For worst actor, Sandler is up against "Bucky Larson" star Nick Swardson, along with Russell Brand for "Arthur"; Nicolas Cage for "Drive Angry," "Season of the Witch" and "Trespass"; and Taylor Lautner for "Abduction" and "Breaking Dawn."

Swardson also was nominated for worst supporting actor for "Jack and Jill" and "Just Go with It."

For worst actress, Sandler is joined by another cross-dressing actor, Martin Lawrence in "Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son." Also nominated were Sarah Palin for her documentary "The Undefeated"; Sarah Jessica Parker for "I Don't Know How She Does It" and "New Year's Eve"; and Kristen Stewart for "Breaking Dawn."

Several Oscar winners made the Razzies list, among them Cage (a best-actor winner for "Leaving Las Vegas") and Pacino (a best-actor winner for "Scent of a Woman"), who was nominated for worst supporting actor for "Jack and Jill."

Bill Condon, an Oscar winner for his "Gods and Monsters" screenplay, was among the worst-director nominees at the Razzies for "Breaking Dawn."

The group traditionally has announced its nominees the day before the Oscar nominations and its winners the night before the Oscars. But Wilson and the roughly 600 voting members for the Razzies decided to experiment with an April 1 date this time, figuring April Fool's Day was an ideal time for their mock ceremony.

"I have always wondered if we stepped slightly away from lockstep with the Oscars, what would happen," Wilson said. "We just kept hoping the Oscars would do their ceremony on April 2, but they just never did."

I loved it! I thought Adam was absolutely brilliant playing his part and the sisters, who was such a hilarious character, how could anyone not laugh? and then part way through comes in Al, Al Pacino, I loved it! I watched it about 10 times already, yes I bought it, and worth every penny..but then again, Adam Sandler is talented, he is one understated actor, and that characterizaton he did in the movie was amazing...his reactions are so understated and perfect.
What's not to love?

I don't think it was right to nominate "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" for some of those awards. Sure, it has a lot bad stuff in it but I was entertained. It was certainly better than the last one. Overall, I give it 5/10.

The preview for Jack and Jill made me cringe. It was horrible, and that's supposed to be the best parts of the movie...

I like Sandler but it just seems like every single movie he has done just ends up more and more like every movie he has already done.... Similar stories. Always uses the same actors to do the bit parts.. It is like watching old Burt Reynolds comedies... Or any Judd Apatow movie for that matter.. Same actors same characters just different character names and thrown up plot.

He does have some great ones for sure but I think he would be better off acting in a few movies instead of trying to write and produce his own.. I would love to see him in some different acting roles.. Deeper, darker, or more serious drama stuff. I think Punch Drunk Love kinda started to touch on a different type of roll for him. I want to see some of his range.. I am tired of the stupid voices.

No matter how old I get, there will always be a part of me that loves Sandler's humor. Glad to see Twilight is nominated.

Eddie Murphy, Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler... I think these guys could be great if they actually have some control over themselves and their comedy. Beverly Hills Cop, Night at the Museum, Stranger Than Fiction, 50 First Dates... Great movies. Norbit, Zoolander, Blades of Glory, You Don't Mess With The Zohan... Terrible movies. What keeps us watching them is that they're such likable guys, but it gets to a point where one absurd comedy after another makes it hard for us to keep liking them. I feel like we're made to be the fools, as if they just think that we're stupid and gullible and will just keep seeing their movies regardless.

sandler wrote and concieved the zohan movie, and I believe pretty much everything else he does

there is no blaming it on bad writers
10:18 AM on 02/27/2012
I wasn't blaming their bad movies on anybody but them. I was just saying that they get a little carried away and over the top with their acting and comedy that it just isn't funny. Happy Gilmore... Funny. Little Nicky... Stupid. Nutty Professor... Funny. Norbit... Awful. These guys have talent, there's no doubt about that, but if it's unharnessed, they just go wild and off the wall.

Oh come on, Blades of Glory was awsome, as was Zoolander. Some movies are just so dumb that they are hysterical, and those two were prime examples.

Agreed. For the life of me, I wondered if the laughter on SNL was a laugh track or something was in the air.
