UPDATE: Afghanistan NATO staff have been recalled following attack. Click here for full story.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - A gunman killed two American advisers inside a heavily guarded government compound in Kabul Saturday, officials said, as protests against the burning of copies of the Muslim holy book roiled the country for a fifth day.

U.S. officials said the assailant remained at large as neither an apology from President Barack Obama nor gunfire from Afghan police could quench public outrage over what NATO insisted was an inadvertent desecration of the Quran.

Two Afghan officials said the ministry shooting did not involve any Afghans. They spoke anonymously to discuss a NATO incident. One of the officials noted that the shooting occurred inside a secure room at the ministry that Afghan staff do not have access to.

NATO confirmed that two service members were killed, but spokesman Lt. Col Jimmie Cummings said "initial reports say it was not a Western shooter." He declined to provide further information.

A U.S. official in Washington confirmed that the two killed were American. The official spoke anonymously to discuss information that had not been publicly released.

"The assailant is unknown, and an aggressive search is under way to determine who is responsible," Pentagon press secretary George Little said.

NATO forces have advisers embedded in many Afghan ministries, both as trainers and to help manage the transition to Afghan control and foreign forces prepare to withdraw by the end of 2014. The Afghan Interior Ministry oversees all of the country's police, so has numerous NATO advisers.

Saturday's attack comes as tensions between the Afghans and the Americans are high following the burning of copies of the Muslim holy book at a U.S. base that sparked days of deadly protests

In a statement, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the gunman was an insurgent named Abdul Rahman. He said an accomplice inside the ministry helped him get inside the compound. He said the killings were a planned response to the Quran burnings.

"After the attack, Rahman informed us by telephone that he was able to kill four high-ranking American advisers," Mujahid said. The Taliban frequently exaggerate casualty claims.

At least 25 people have been killed and hundreds wounded since Tuesday, when it first emerged that Qurans and other religious materials had been thrown into a fire pit used to burn garbage at Bagram Air Field, a large U.S. base north of Kabul.

Among those dead were two U.S. soldiers who were killed by one of their Afghan counterparts while a riot raged outside their base.

President Barack Obama and other U.S. officials apologized and said the burning of Qurans was a terrible mistake, but the incident has sent thousands to the streets in this deeply religious country.

In Kunduz, the capital of Kunduz province in northeast Afghanistan, more than 1,000 protesters demonstrated. At first they were peaceful, but as the protest continued they began throwing stones at government buildings and a U.N. office, said Sarwer Hussaini, a spokesman for the provincial police. He said the police were firing into the air to try to disperse the crowd.

The U.N. confirmed in a statement that its Kunduz compound was attacked, but said all its staff in Kunduz and in the country were unhurt and accounted for. The statement thanked Afghan security forces for their quick response to the assault.

The Quran burnings have roiled Afghans and set off riots in an illustration of the intensity of the anger at what they perceive as foreign forces flouting their laws and insulting their culture. The U.S. has apologized for the burnings, which took place at a military base near Kabul, and said it was a mistake. (AP Photo/Obaid Ormur)

We massacred tens of thousands of innocents to hunt down a man WE TRAINED and funded to become a terrorist. - But when the ravaged people rile up against us everyone cries "WHY DO THEY HATE US?"

Easy:

We deserve it. We did not stop the training of the 100.000 terrorists that now are called Taliban and Al Qaida and we elected TWICE the grandson of Hitler's banker in America to kill them. The ones who lied to us are traitors. But we too deserve the hatred for not stopping them. - In many cases even supporting their war crimes.

Shouldn't the more eye-for-an-eye response from the Islamic zealots have been to bury a few bibles? These men need to find something constructive to do with their time.

So ironic in that the Koran itself forbids this murderous rampage fueled by vengeance. These folks seem to be stuck in the 7th century culturally and religiously. For a multitude of reasons this is where they want to be..... left to their own devices without outside interference. Far too many of us in the West seem to assign 911 blame to them when in point of fact the overwhelming majority of the hijackers were of Saudi origin. Our retaliation against Afghanistan provided us with a brief taste of gratification as we sought retribution for the horror of that day.Having killed all but a few of the main players I fail to understand why we are still in the country chasing ghosts.

I agree and their history has provided a context for their beliefs too. We seem always to assign our own values when judging the merits of some other nations values. They have rarley ever meshed when seen in the light of East vs West. Totally different mind set.

The US military-- the smartest men in the room??? Peeing on dead Taliban, the "SS" flags, burning the Quran. When will you learn that you have an overspent, overdrawn, overused military force of not the best and the brightest- and you - their supposed leaders, continually let them down?

Afghanistan has progressed very little over the last 2000 years. They're the Middle East's version of Haiti. Except Haiti wants to join the 21st century. Afghanistan wants to remain like it is.

The reason for that is the tribal leaders are making a good living cultivating some of the highest quality heroin and and hashish on the planet. And they use the Quran and their money to keep the masses in tow.

"...Afghanistan has progressed very little ..."

and once more, this has a lot to do with US foreign policy:

Prior to 1979, Brzezinski and the CIA started to supply today's Taliban with weapons, so that they could overthrow the Russian backed government there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYvO3qAlyTg

In 1982, Ronald Reagan called the Taliban the "moral equivalent of our founding fathers."

If you want to have an idea what Afghanistan looked like in the 1950's and 60's:

http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2010/05/27/once_upon_a_time_in_afghanistan

until Brzezinski and the CIA decided enough is enough.”

And, by the way, prior to the US invasion, the Taliban completely abolished the cultivation of poppy's, which is perhaps another good reason why they had to be removed from power.

People have such conveniently short memories. Excellent you brought this up.

I might add that in the same way the CIA trained and supported Osama Bin Laden. People kinda seem to have forgotten that too.

The US has a history of supporting the wrong people and/or alienating them.

War is always about PROFITS http://www.guidetoaction.org/magazine/pipeline.html

"Ever since the fall of the Soviet Union, Western energy interests have hungrily eyed the massive, untapped oil and natural gas reserves in the former Soviet republics of Central Asia. It's estimated that roughly 15 billion barrels of oil and about 9 trillion cubic meters of natural gas lie beneath the soil of Afghanistan's neighbors, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. One calculation puts the potential value of Central Asian fossil fuels at $3 trillion.

Afghanistan itself is not known to have major energy reserves. Instead, the country's most valuable natural resource is its location: It sits smack between the oil and gas fields of its neighbors and potentially huge markets in Pakistan, India, and beyond. So in the mid-1990s, while Russia, China, Iran, and several European nations squabbled over pipelines through Russia and Iran, California-based oil and gas giant Unocal was looking at another route -- from Turkmenistan straight through Afghanistan to Pakistan or India. To build such a pipeline, however, the company would have to dance cheek-to-cheek with the Taliban, who were then rising to power.

Unocal has long been criticized for doing business in countries with repressive governments, and the company wasn't afraid to pursue the Taliban. "We're an oil and gas company. We go where the oil and gas is," Unocal spokesman Mike Thatcher told MotherJones.com."

There was a really interesting on-the-scene report from Martine van Bijlert, an EU policy analyst and sociologist who has been living in Kabul for the last several years. She points out that there was actually an unusual amount of restraint in these protests.

In total, there were protests in about half the provinces, and the largest of them only encompassed a couple thousand protesters -- a fraction of a fraction of a percent of Afghanistan's population of 34 million. While some radical imams did incite violence, many urged calm and restraint. While a couple of the protests turned violent, and there were deaths and injuries, the vast majority were mainly peaceful gatherings that ended quickly.

"With possibly up to twelve people dead and seventy injured, it may be difficult to explain to the rest of the world, but in a way this is what relative restraint looks like – in a country awash with weapons and frustration, and that has suffered for decades from the young men itching for a fight and the leaders accustomed to using religiously fueled violence as a political tool," she writes. "Afghanistan is still very violent and deeply conservative, but it would be a mistake to paint the whole population with the same brush."

Conservative would be the wrong term to describe religious fanatics. Conservative's are really people of moderation, not hard right nor left. They approach every task, problem, or goal in a measured way. The problems in Afghanistan can be traced back to Obama's current policies. Terrorists know he will always sacrifice US personnel to provide cover for his failed leadership. His massive cuts in US Forces will demoralize our military and throw them out in the street without jobs. Our military personnel have sacrificed more than anyone yet Obama is targeting them for benefit cuts. These are not highly paid Union workers that go home every night. They are highly trained professionals risking their lives in the most dangerous countries in the World. They are moved every three years, have long family separations, and get low pay considering the dangers they face. But Obama is more worried about Illegal immigrants than our Nations military.
