Arizona Debate: Conservative Chickens Come Home To Roost

Posted: 02/25/12 12:50 AM ET

Rolling Stone:

The lack of attention span, the constant demand for instant gratification, the abject hunger for negativity, the utter lack of backbone or constancy (we change our loyalties at the drop of a hat, all it takes is a clever TV ad): these things are all major factors in the spiraling Republican disaster.

Matt nailed the underlying problems of this.  Their recent craziness and out and out war against working people, the middle class, the poor, and especially women, is coming home to roost and people are growing tired of the noise and the division and the assaults on what turns out to be true Americanism, while they claim to be the truest of the true and the answer.  They were elected two years ago  Read More...

Out to the pasture of obsolescense, then we can get onto the business of having a civilization -- with people. Mankinds future holds too many macro problems to not cooperate.

Clucking great article, Matt! Keep ruffling their feathers (though it looks like they're doing a fine job on their own).

Dag straight! The gop hopefuls change their stance depending on the audience (hot air in the room) instead of discussing the policies they'd like to implement and why. Fools.

"No, it was while watching the debates last night that it finally hit me: This is justice. What we have here are chickens coming home to roost. It's as if all of the American public's bad habits and perverse obsessions are all coming back to haunt Republican voters in this race: The lack of attention span, the constant demand for instant gratification, the abject hunger for negativity, the utter lack of backbone or constancy (we change our loyalties at the drop of a hat, all it takes is a clever TV ad): these things are all major factors in the spiraling Republican disaster."

The future of the United States may well include another Civil War, as Republicans continue trying to secure and maintain complete control of states and groups like the Oath Keepers, which champion states rights, and militias continue trying to stoke the fires that have been smoldering since the end of the Civil War. This may sound far-fetched, but seven of the ten Oath Keepers' tenents apply to civil war, and they will refuse:

Orders to detain American citizens as “unlawful enemy combatants” or to subject them to military tribunal. (Somehow I don't think that this is about Islamic enemy combatants.)

Orders to impose martial law or a “state of emergency” on a state.

Orders to invade and subjugate any state that asserts its sovereignty.

Any order to blockade American cities, thus turning them into giant concentration camps.

Any order to force American citizens into any form of detention camps under any pretext.

Orders to assist or support the use of any foreign troops on U.S. soil against the American people to “keep the peace” or to “maintain control."

Any orders to confiscate the property of the American people, including food and other essential supplies.

The ironic thing is that the Oath Keepers include members of the military, but they would refuse the type of orders that ended up bringing the Union back together.

I travel all over "fly-over country", and people speak to me openly about a coming civil war. Many absolutely hate Obama. Of course, not everyone is like this, but I have been travelling this route for over 20 years, and never heard such talk before. The teabaggers are completely off their rockers with paranoia and/or some very weird form of angry religiosity, and are heavily armed. This is not a good combination.

Thanks for your perspective. When you have a sitting governor talking about seccession as an option and yelling "states rights" over and over again to a group of Tea Party members, that's a pretty good indication of where the country might be heading.
09:59 AM on 02/27/2012
As a progressive, I SUPPORT THEIR SECESSION. We would avoid the specter of civil war, and each could live in the political/economic/religious system we want. I think the phrase "one nation, indivisible" in the pledge is laughable.

So you think that:

Orders to detain American citizens as “unlawful enemy combatants” or to subject them to military tribunal.

Orders to impose martial law or a “state of emergency” on a state.

Orders to invade and subjugate any state that asserts its sovereignty.

Orders to blockade American cities, thus turning them into giant concentration camps.

Orders to force American citizens into any form of detention camps under any pretext.

Orders to assist or support the use of any foreign troops on U.S. soil against the American people to “keep the peace” or to “maintain control."

Any orders to confiscate the property of the American people, including food and other essential supplies.

Are all constitutional legal and proper use of federal authority?

The Military "Oath of enlistment"

"I will defend the Nation against ALL enemies, foreign or domestic"

Perhaps you don't understand the meaning of the term "Civil War".

As usual, spot on observations and conclusions from this author. It isn't just the GOP's actions that are at work here, but the tendency we Americans have now for wanting to be entertained, even with our politics. But I keep being reminded of Rome and the Coliseum and wondering if we all aren't going to be des.tro.yed by our modern tendencies, wants and desires. It's not just the GOP that is in dan.ger.

There's a deeper problem that underlies this issue.

Everyone acknowledges the problems with "To big to fail" financial institutions. Most would be more than happy to see allowed to dissolve so players can take the stage. We have the same sort of entrenched, regulated into dominance "To big to fail" dynamic working in our political system as well.

The low election turnouts in 2010 and particularly in the GOP primaries underscore this point. Frankly many don't have enthusiastic support for either party and vote for the person they have marginal agreement with or out of fear choose what they perceive to be the lesser of two evils.

Feeling secure in the knowledge that there is not and cannot be a viable challenge to a parties jealously guarded dominance leads them to field candidates that represent only what they believe will please the "inner circle" that consists of mega donors and deep pockets instead of appealing to a broader base by representing the opinions of the majority of their constituents.

This primary season has been a joke in terms of GOP turnout, 6-10% of the registered voters are participating and they happen to be the extreme hard core social conservatives. Ricky has been the beneficary of those low turnouts, add another 10% to the vote totals and he doesn't win a single one...

Agreed about this years GOP turnout.

Having said that you have to ask yourself how a slate of very similar candidates did so well in 2010 on the state and local levels
07:29 PM on 02/25/2012
Exactly, if the nutty theist GOP disappeared the Dems would quickly be the new enermy of civilized humanity. Where is the renewable energy from Obama? Did it all go to connected solar companies that went bankrupt? .Its just a shame that too few people take the time to understand the financial collapse where Wall street endlessly bought mortgages they knew were bad and repackeaged them as AAA rated junk bonds, then bet against the bonds and CDO's while having credit default swaps to insure the things they bet against. Then the bails outs that were supposed to be used for loans went for 8 figure bonuses to the CEO class. Where are the inditements from this administration? Where is the outrage. People parrot that it was too many minorities getting loans the govenemnt made the banks make. What a joke. Read Freefall and The Big Short. It will make you cry for our nation and kids...
