Ben Affleck Joins Facebook To Teach Philanthropy Lesson

First Posted: 02/25/2012 11:41 am Updated: 02/26/2012 11:46 am

Ben Affleck heard 2012 calling and decided to answer by joining Facebook. But the "Good Will Hunting" star isn't looking to promote his on-screen gigs -- he's more interested in sharing his philanthropic work with the social networking community.

By setting up his page, (he went straight for Timeline), Affleck hopes to let the world in on the causes that are most dear to him. One of those causes is helping out those in need in the Congo.

"Looking forward to bringing some awareness to what's happening in the Congo today," Affleck wrote on his Facebook page, "and sharing stories of the extraordinary people I've met along the way."

The actor recently told People that it was his kids, Violet, 6, and Seraphina, 3, who inspired him to bring good into the world.

"I got to a point in my life where I felt like I had been very fortunate," Affleck told the news source, "and I wanted to do something more with my life than just make movies and try to make money. I wanted to do something that was important to me in other ways and would serve as an example to my kids."

Affleck has campaigned Congress on behalf of the Eastern Congo Initiative, a U.S. based advocacy and grant-making agency that works to meet needs specific to Eastern Congo.

Before ECI was founded, Affleck served as a correspondent for "Nightline" , and in 2009, when ECI was established, he wrote a piece for TIME , outlining the many layers of corruption, hunger, and poverty that exist in the region.

"The nation most in need of investment gets the least by the cruel logic that it is the most broken," Affleck wrote, "It is a self-fulfilling prophecy that ultimately fosters indifference in the guise of wisdom. That should not be the case in Congo."

I think what Ben is doing is great. To him and others in Hollywood as well as our politicians I only say that charity begins at home. There are to many homeless and hungry Americans that need our help. Not to mention our Veterans who have fought so that we can have our freedom. No one needs our help any more than than our own people.Once we eradicate homelessness and hunger in America I'm all for reaching out and helping others beyond our borders. Letting Americans be hungry and homeless is the same as allowing your own children or grandchildren to be homeless or hungry, while giving a stranger food. Someone please tell me why it's ok for the the wealthy to give away their money to other countries, but it's a sin to ask them to pay more taxes for the betterment of America and their own countrymen.

I agree, there is much suffering right here in the U.S. that people think isn't as important as some other nation. Ben I applaud your efforts in the Congo, but there are hungry people in Detroit, L.A., New York, and all over our country. Put your efforts behind Feed My People, or any of the other food pantries that have to service the growing needs of the Hungry in America. Still, thank you for helping out!

I know, we need more rich celebrities who do nothing, just sit around and spend, spend, spend on themselves. I mean seriously, can you believe this guy trying to help people not as fortunate as he is.....the nerve! What is wrong with you!

Ben's initiative is heart-warming. I only question why he is helping the Congo rather than something like Feed the Children USA? He doesn't live in the Congo; he lives in the United States of America. I'm sure he contributes to many USA charities; I'm wondering why he doesn't keep all his philanthropic good works here in the country in which he was born and gave him the freedom to become rich and famous?

Why should he keep "all his philanthropic good works here in the country"? He is a celebrity and he has acquired the wealth he has acquired because of fans all over the world, so he is giving back to "the world"! Way to go Ben!

Ben is one of a new breed of REAL men who spend their money helping those in need instead of feeding their egos. I'm loving it!!!

Ben is not saying, "Do as I say, not as I do." He is going ahead and creating a solution to a problem that he has been allowed, by his good fortune, to see. I don't understand the "crying in the manger" snipes at anyone that is in the front line of helping this world's poor. He didn't ask permission or seek approval. He just acted. Bully for him.

One of the all-time great doucehbags. I couldn't' care less what he is supporting. I'm blown-away that he is doing anything for another human being but I'm sure its about getting the media attention.

At least they don't make any bones about what they're doing. Affleck is a phony and a terrible actor to boot.
