CNN Founder Ted Turner Opposed To Keystone Pipeline

Posted: 02/25/12 01:03 PM ET  |  Updated: 02/25/12 01:18 PM ET

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — CNN founder Ted Turner is opposing construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, which would be built close to his buffalo ranch in South Dakota.

The pipeline would deliver oil from Canada's Alberta province to the U.S. Gulf Coast, running through Montana, Nebraska and South Dakota in the Great Plains.

CNN recently broadcast a commentary in which Turner says the pipeline shouldn't be built.

The manager of Turner's 141,000-acre buffalo ranch southwest of Pierre says the pipeline would cross the Bad River about 15 miles upstream from the ranch. The river flows through Turner's property.

Manager Tom LeFaive tells the Rapid City Journal (http://bit.ly/yL4yC5) the project should at least guarantee that a percentage of the Canadian crude oil is used in the United States.

Is it not in America's best interests to keep Canada's oil "landlocked"? Why would we open a back door and let the oil out to other countries? How is that a good "national security" policy? We don't like being dependent on oil from the Middle East or Venezuela, so let's help Canada export their oil to other countries like China (who spent billions buying Canadian oil sand sites). It was a good thing for us that the pipeline was effectively blocked by citizens in Canada, but what on earth are the GOP thinking???? We had it made .... until the GOP starting lining their damn pockets with bribes.

Immediate satisfaction, future destruction.

Currently (2/29/12) MSNBC is offering an online poll to vote YES or NO on whether the White House should approve the pipeline.

A hefty tax on refined exports would ensure that the oil is used here in the US.

The same Canadian company is now wanting to build a pipeline from Oklahoma to Texas to get around the Keystone Pipeline order.

Of course, he's a limousine liberal like many of the 1%. What does he care if the price of gas goes up, he can afford it. CNN the warmonger channel, is only interested in war, war and more war. The economy? Let them eat peas.
09:01 PM on 02/27/2012
Gas prices went up recently, just because Hess and others decided to close some refineries.
Why? Ostensibly, because the refineries were outdated. But, more than likely just to drive up prices and ruin the economy. It's ok to be an anarchist if you're rich oil barron.

I always love to read how the 99% defends big oil, gopoopers, wall sreeters, banksters, radical religious bullies to the very detriment of themselves. "What's the matter with Kansas," is really, "What's the matter with Americans! "

Giving up your rights to clean water and environment may be your choice, but when you sacrifice the environment for the rest of us, you have gone too far!

A lot of America listens to TT. He should, VERY publically and VERY often, lay out the facts supporting his opinion on every media outlet, especially Fox.

Which relies on natural resources such as the Bad River, which this pipeline would unnecessarily expose to potential environmental disaster. Didn't we learn anything from BP destroying the gulf? Do we really have to duplicate those results throughout the United States?

You are saying that Ted Turner has nothing to do with the article? He is the principal subject of the article !!!

Quotes from Ron Liepert, Alberta Canada's Energy Minister:

"There is a long-term plan to get oil to the East, and it will happen."

"We want to become a global energy superpower," said Liepert. "And you're not going to become a global superpower of anything with one customer (the U.S.)."
10:27 AM on 02/27/2012
"The Chinese and the Canadian governments both badly want the pipeline to be built so Alberta crude won’t be “trapped” in North America and sold at a discount in the States."

- MarketWatch (WSJ) - 2/23/12

The article is referring to an Enbridge pipeline (Canadian), but surely the same motivations apply to TransCanada and their Keystone XL.

The Dems tried to attach an amendment (to a House Keystone bill) to require that all of that oil would be used domestically, and the republicans unanimously defeated it.

Mr.Turner is correct ,it is a bad deal.Cornell University did a study
that shows very little economic gain and a good chance of oil spills
and pollution that is very toxic.Tar sands are a major reason for
a increase in cancer rates where it is being extracted.google

Twelve (12) spills in one year with the original Keystone pipeline

Keystone Pipeline Infographic: 'Built To Spill'

" an editorial in The New York Times opposed the pipeline, reading, "We have two main concerns: the risk of oil spills along the pipeline, which would traverse highly sensitive terrain, and the fact that the extraction of petroleum from the tar sands creates far more greenhouse emissions than conventional production does..."

TransCanada says their Keystone pipelines are the safest on the continent.

But what about those 12 spills in the past year? Since its operation began in June of 2010, the Keystone 1 pipeline has suffered more spills than any other 1st year pipeline in U.S. history, a track record which does not bode well for the proposed Keystone XL which tracks across one of the largest aquifers in the world – the Ogallala – which supplies drinking water to millions of mid-Westerners and provides 30% of the nation’s groundwater used for irrigation.

The Keystone pipeline map shows the spills documented in TransCanada's publicly released safety records alongside the proposed route for Keystone XL, indicating key risk areas near waterways and major metropolitan areas..."

not only guarantee a percentage of crude, but jobs as well, neither of which has been quantified to date. why should the usa serve as a conduit between canada and china with no such guarantees?

If people read the canadian news online they'd find out that keystone was never intended to supply us with oil........ we already buy 98% of Canada's oil....... keystone was to get more oil to "overseas" customers. We take all the risk, big oil makes all the profits.

The Canadian people are even opposed to pipelines being built east or west (the tar sands are landlocked in the middle of the country)......the people already know the dangers and problems the tar sands have already caused on their land. .......that's why Big Oil tried to have it built through OUR country to OUR ports in the gulf.....easy exporting from there.

Actually no guarantee whatsoever was offered for oil. In fact the current production provides the midwest with tarsands for refinement, that oil will be diverted to the gulf for shipment overseas lowering the amount of oil for sale in the US raising prices for all of us.
