Fez Whatley, SiriusXM Radio Host, Comes Out As Gay On Air On Ron & Fez Show

First Posted: 02/26/2012 3:12 pm Updated: 02/27/2012 8:49 am

After years of struggling with his sexual identity, SiriusXM host Fez Whatley came out as gay on the Ron & Fez show on Friday.

The announcement came after Whatley spent the last 20 years playing a gay character on the air while he remained closeted to his family, friends, and even himself.

In an interview with The Interrobang.com Whatley discussed his coming out process including the terror he felt when he finally realized that he wasn't just waiting to find the "perfect girl" -- he was gay:

Coming to this realization was devastating. After all those years of denying it, it was true. Fez Whatley was no longer a character that I played on the air. He was me. And now it wasn't funny anymore. I was now everything that I had joked about. I got depressed…I couldn't make myself be Fez Whatley anymore. I was terrified about being really gay.

Whatley goes on to say that after dealing with great bouts of depression and anxiety, he finally told his best friend and co-host Ron Bennington, and found some of the acceptance he needed. He also began to discuss LGBT issues -- like marriage equality, "don't ask, don't tell," and bully -- but "from a place of anger, not understanding."

He adds:

There are too many important issues out there facing gay Americans for me to just be yelling out the occasional protest from the closet. I see comedians like Wanda Sykes, Margaret Cho, Mo Roccca, and most recently Todd Glass, and they haven't lost their sense of humor. They're entertaining and still make a difference in the community…

I can't be part of "It Gets Better" until I make sure things are going to get better for me. And that's what I intend on doing. So that the next time I'm asked by someone "Are you really gay?" I can finally answer, "24 hours a day."

After Whatley came out, a caller phoned the Ron & Fez show to tell them about how the radio host's revelation inspired the caller's best friend to come out on the spot:

Caller Chris: I just wanted to let you know... I was just listening with my best friend Danny and after you [Fez] said what you said he came out to me and I wanted to let you know that you just inspired him so much and now he is going and telling own family and we’re all really proud of you man! Congratulations!

Ron Bennington: (joking) Why do I feel like Danny is a straight guy who is driving home, yelling?

Chris: No, seriously, he’s not.

Ron: That really is a true story? Did you know that he was gay?

Chris: I had my suspicions...

Fez: Everyone does.

Chris: I was never really sure but you know what I am still going to be his best friend and he started crying and I started crying too. Thanks for that, you did that, that’s all you man, thank you.

Fez: Thank you -- way to go, Danny!

Rumors have long circulated about Bomer's sexuality, but it wasn't until mid-February of 2012 that the star confirmed what many believed:

He's gay and raising a family with partner Simon Halls.

The "White Collar" hunk came out during the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards, where he received the New Generation Arts and Activism Award for his work in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

"I'd really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry," he told the crowd. "Thank you for teaching me what unconditional love is. You will always be my proudest accomplishment."

Gay, straight...

That show is awful.

I remember Ron and Fez on late nights in DC over a decade ago.

I knew this foolishness WAAAAAAAY back then. And the even stranger thing is that he waited until the ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of his FATHER'S DEATH to go public.

Kinda everyone knew it. It wasn't exactly a secret. At least now their show hopefully won't have Fez breaking down crying on the air over his sexuality like he has been doing over the past 3 years. He singlehandedly made the show unlistenable.

I am reminded of this, from an author I do not respect at all, but it is great for people dealing with the shame and heaviness that must weigh down their lives so:

"Mr. Rearden," said Francisco, his voice solemnly calm, "if you saw Atlas, the giant who holds the world on his shoulders, if you saw that he stood, blood running down his chest, his knees buckling, his arms trembling but still trying to hold the world aloft with the last of his strength, and the greater his effort the heavier the world bore down upon his shoulders -- what would you tell him to do?"

"I . . . don't know. What . . . could he do? What would you tell him?"

"I would tell him to shrug."

I am fascinated by the slide show that accompanies this stunning revelation.

Curious whether Anne Heche would get one or two mentions, I see she gets none. ;-(

I can't be part of "It Gets Better" until I make sure things are going to get better for me.

**********

This was refreshing to read.

Whereas the "It Gets Better" campaign is a great thing, motivated by love and a desire to help others, it is not entirely intellectually honest; sometimes it does NOT get better for some of us who are gay.

Some never make it. Some get bogged down by the imposed indoctrination into self-loathing. It's a perpetual struggle, given the rancor and animus gays face every day.

What a travesty!

Come here! California - to Los Angeles or San Francisco! You will be welcome with open arms - to be who you really are. Get rid of that burden, if you can, in a safer place.

xoxox,

Zel

Oh, thank you. You're kind. I'm from Boston and I've been out and self-accepting for nearly 20 years. I'm just commenting on the general difficulties facing gay people on a daily basis.

I used to live in L.A., btw. Haven't been back. Should visit again soon. Enjoy your day, Zel. xo back atcha

Are all these people so called coming out looking for an award or something? Who cares!!
10:36 AM on 02/27/2012
True. It's a common occurence. If they wanted to be special they should have come out about a zillion (Obama's next budget amount) gays ago. You're just one of many. Yawn!!!!!!!

These gestures mean a lot to the terrified gay kid living in a house of gay haters. They help. Your assessment is both superficial and callous.

All these people coming out are coming out as a response to the gay youth suicide epidemic we've witnessed and endured. They're coming out to help others, and in doing so, they help themselves.

It is neither for attention nor accolades.

And btw, you cared enough to (presumably) read, and then post on the topic.

WHAT?? I'm shocked!! I've loved and listened to this show for years.. Everybody KNEW! But congrats for stepping out. Now take better care of your health!!

NO, it was a business question! Sirius was launched with much fanfare as the next best thing, then flatlined to a stock price around 2 something a share. Had not heard much about the company lately. That's all.

Yeah I don't know how. Especially with a business model like this:

Caller: I want to cancel my subscription.
Sirius Rep: Well we can offer you 3 months of free service if you stayed subscribed.
Caller: Well if it's free...
Sirius Rep: Yes, 3 months of free service.
Caller: Well sure, thanks.

3 months later-

Caller: I want to cancel my subscription.
Sirius Rep: Well we can offer you 3 months of free service if you stayed subscribed....

It's a never ending cycle. My friend got free sat radio for 9 months though before he got sick of calling every 3 months lol.
